Building on a lifetime of public service, President Clinton established the Clinton Foundation on the simple belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, everyone has a responsibility to act, and we all do better when we work together. For more than two decades, those values have energized the Foundation’s efforts to address big challenges, create new opportunities, and make a difference in people’s lives across the United States and around the world.

Since we first opened in Harlem and broke ground in Little Rock, we’ve formed partnerships that fill the gaps between what the public sector can provide and the private sector can produce — always striving to solve problems faster, better, and at lower cost.

2022
For the first time since 2016, CGI brought together global and emerging leaders to take action on the world’s most pressing challenges. Participants announced 144 new Commitments to Action that address climate change, health equity, inclusive economic growth, and the global refugee crisis.
2021
Amid the economic fallout of the pandemic, President Clinton launches the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Action Network on Inclusive Economic Recovery, calling on national and community leaders to generate new commitments that support small businesses, invest in digital technology, spur economic development, and improve access to capital in underserved communities.
2018
In the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria and at the invitation of local leaders, President Clinton launches the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery — bringing together leaders from government, business, and civil society to discuss and develop solutions that address immediate and long-term hurricane recovery needs facing the region.
2016
Chelsea Clinton and the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) launch the Women in Renewable Energy (WIRE) Network to promote women’s leadership in the energy sector.
2015
The Clinton Health Matters Initiative (CHMI) announces new strategic partnerships to combat the opioid epidemic. This includes a partnership with Adapt Pharma to distribute free doses of NARCAN® (naloxone HCl) Nasal Spray to community partners, in addition to selling their new naloxone treatment at a discounted price to public interest entities.
2014
The Clinton Presidential Center, in partnership with the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation, and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation, launches the Presidential Leadership Scholars Program.
2013
Secretary Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton launch Too Small to Fail, a public awareness and action campaign to promote the importance of early brain and language development.
2012
Chelsea Clinton establishes the Clinton Foundation Day of Action program for volunteers to give back to communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
President Clinton launches the Clinton Health Matters Initiative (CHMI) and holds its first Summit as part of the Humana Challenge PGA tour event.
CHMI worked to improve the health and well-being of all people by activating individuals, communities, and organizations to make meaningful contributions to the health of others, and by building strategic cross-sector partnerships and programs that increase community capacity, collaboration, and health infrastructure. The program led worked at the invitation of communities to lead community health transformation efforts in Northeast Florida, Central Arkansas, and Houston.
2010
In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, President Clinton forms the Clinton Foundation Haiti Fund to support relief efforts as well as projects focused on restoring Haiti’s communities, sustainable development, education, and capacity building. The Fund would go on to raise over $30 million for emergency relief efforts in Haiti.
2009
President Clinton issues a call to action to Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) members to commit to helping Haiti rebuild following a series of devastating hurricanes which hit the country. To date, Haiti Action Network members have made more than 100 Commitments to Action focused on Haiti, valued at $500 million when fully funded and implemented.
2008
The Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) holds its first meeting at Tulane University to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses.
The Clinton Development Initiative (CDI) opens its first Anchor Farm in Malawi to provide smallholder farmers with access to discounted pricing on seeds and other inputs, as well as access to improved markets. In 2024, CDI became an independent entity known as Community Agribusiness Partners.
2007
In an effort to increase incomes and improve health and education systems in Colombia and Peru, President Clinton and Frank Giustra launch the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative (CGSGI). The effort would later refine its strategy and expand into new regions, becoming what is now the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership (CGEP). In 2020, CGEP became an independent entity known as Acceso.
2006
The Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) forms to confront climate change and help communities adapt to its effects.
2005
President Clinton establishes the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), bringing together influential voices and leaders from business, philanthropy, and civil society to address the world’s most pressing challenges.
The Foundation partners with the American Heart Association to launch the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, which aims to promote healthy environments so that young people can achieve lifelong good health. Since then, Healthier Generation has grown into an independent and associated initiative that works with schools, youth-serving organizations, businesses, and communities to empower kids to develop lifelong healthy habits by ensuring the environments that surround them provide and promote good health.
2004
Four American presidents and more than 30,000 attendees celebrate the grand opening of the Clinton Presidential Center. The University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service becomes the first school in the nation to offer a Master of Public Service degree. The Clinton Library receives Silver LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for being resource and energy efficient; in 2007, the Library is recertified as Platinum.
2002
The Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI), which later becomes the Clinton Health Access Initiative, forms to address the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Africa and the Caribbean. CHAI staff, volunteers, and partners, working with local and national governments, come together to create comprehensive HIV care and treatment plans.
2001
President Clinton presides over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock.
The William J. Clinton Foundation opens its doors in Harlem and Little Rock, with a staff of 18 between the two locations.

BKD prepared the original and amended returns for 2010, 2011, and 2012. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) prepared the original and amended returns for 2013 and the 2014 Forms 990 and 990T. PwC also performed the independent audit of the Foundation’s consolidated financial statement for 2014 which includes the accounts and activities of the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). CHAI’s tax return and amended returns for prior years were separately filed; these returns were prepared by a separate tax firm – not BKD or PwC – independently selected by CHAI.

Clinton Global Initiative:
From 2005 to 2009 the Clinton Global Initiative was an initiative of the Foundation. From 2010 to 2013, CGI operated as a separate but affiliated non-profit organization as part of an agreement between the Foundation and the Obama Administration. During this period, the Foundation continued to consolidate CGI’s finances into its annual financial reporting. CGI’s application for tax-exempt status (IRS Form 1023) and the IRS’s response granting tax-exempt status are available here:
In 2013, CGI ceased operating as a separate entity and resumed operating as an initiative of the Clinton Foundation.
The Clinton Health Access Initiative (formerly the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative) has been incorporated as a separate, but affiliated, non-profit organization since 2010. Because of this ongoing affiliation, the Clinton Foundation is required to consolidate CHAI’s finances into the Foundation’s audited financial reporting.
