- Chris WSydney, Australia190 contributionsI came to Clausthal to seek some family history information and see where my great (x6) grandparents originated from. As my great (x6) grandfather was reported to be an iron ore miner in the Harz Mountains and came from Clausthal, the Oberharzer Museum was the perfect place to start.
I came with photos and information from my family and the young guide, whilst not the best at English, gave me an excellent guided tour through the museum and I think I was able to get a very good idea of the conditions my grandfather would have worked in.
The museum is well laid out and gives a very sound history of the mining activities in this region. The museum itself celebrated 125 years of existence as a museum, so it nearly dates back to when my grandfather worked here in the 1850's before emigrating to Australia.
Well worth the visit and a big thank you to the staff on duty the day I arrived and the young guide who did his best and guided me through the museum.
Once again though, some English translations of the displays would have made it an excellent museum.

Great as a cathedral and in side with the organ, pictures and paintings.
