Clarissa Eden

Clarissa Eden (28 June 1920-15 November 2021) was the wife of Prime Minister Anthony Eden and a niece of Winston Churchill.

Biography[]

Clarissa Spencer-Churchill was born in Kensington, England on 28 June 1920, the daughter of Winston Churchill's younger brother Jack Spencer-Churchill. She travelled to Paris, Tuscany, and London during her studies, and she worked in the Foreign Officer during World War II. After the war, she worked for London Films, and she married Foreign Minister Anthony Eden, 23 years her senior, in 1952, two years after Eden's divorce from his first wife. During Eden's premiership from 1955 to 1957, Clarissa was suspected of having undue influence behind her husband, and she herself claimed that she felt as if the Suez Canal flowed through her drawing room during the Suez Crisis. After her husband's resignation, the couple lived in Alvediston, Wiltshire, where Anthony Eden died in 1977. Clarissa Eden published her memoir in 2007. She died in 2021 at the age of 101.
