Anton Bitel Little White Lies like the fog that constantly shrouds Dunwich, there is something obscure and impenetrable about Fulci’s horror, creating its own uncanny vibe of hermetic irrationality. It’s both strange and maddening. Mar 13, 2024 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk an extremely gory, narratively nonsensical mishmash of effective Gothic atmosphere and an amateurish desire to be as gross as possible Rated: 2/4 Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Lucio Fulci never quite possessed the poetic eye or storytelling prowess of his fellow giallo practitioners Dario Argento and Mario Bava, meaning his movies usually gained their notoriety through shock sequences alone. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 8, 2023 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...filmmaker Fulci delivers an amateurish and entirely momentum-free endeavor... Rated: 1/4 Oct 24, 2020 Full Review Bill Gibron PopMatters The gore moments in The City of the Living Dead are like guitar solos in a rock song - the crowd expects them, the material often needs them, and a great artist like Fulci can create the kind that stick with you long after the concert is done and over. Oct 5, 2018 Full Review Ian Berriman SFX Magazine Whilst not as outlandish as The Beyond, undoubtedly Fulci's finest fever-dream, City Of The Living Dead is still startlingly crackers. B P City of the Living Dead is the first entry of Lucio Fulci's Gates of Hell trilogy and this is a helluva picture to kick off an apocalyptic cinema series. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review tam w I'd like to think i love most horror movies. Particularly ones from the late 70's to late 90's. But this movie sucked. I don't know what i was expecting, but this wasn't it. The music used throughout was about the only redeeming things. I didn't like the special effects, the story, the characters or anything really. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A truly terrifying and disturbing but amazing film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member "I can explain! I was only looking for or a place to sleep!" The suicide of a Massachusetts priest (though, filmed in Georgia) leads to opening the gates of hell on All Saints' Day. Causing the living to go mad with anger and the dead to re-animate, a journalist and psychic work together to close the portal. A meandering plot is saved from being a total waste with a great gore and other effects and a decent soundtrack, though not as good as Fulci's other stuff, e.g. "The Beyond" or "Zombi". Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member City of the living dead is definitely an grindhouse gore horror film and you need a barf bag just in case. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member The City of the Dead aka the gates of hell is a true masterpiece of gore and horror and it's a true definitely one of the ultimate vomit films ever made.
