I actually liked this track. Had no recollection of the track at all. This week’s ‘to be downloaded’ single.
Quelle surprise. This is exactly why I tune in every week.
Looking at the number of pages the thread has advanced since 8pm it looks like the pops is struggling to attract viewers / posters. Quel dommage. !
One for the yoof.
Viewership wise yesterday's showing would have been affected by both Strictly and England Vs Italy as the amount of Tweets were about 50% down their usual number, Digital Spy posting wise the range now seems to be 4-7 pages.
Rain has grown on me since we've seen it a couple of times
You can see why change was coming in 1994. These exclusives with the heritage acts didn't fit with the bulk of the other singles charting. I've always though TOTP2 should have focused separately on heritage acts and the album chart.
Apologies - you're right it was Fairground.
There does over the last few weeks been a pattern of slightly overweight American women singing on more than slightly dull dance tracks.
I was left wondering why a biologist writing a song was any more surprising than a shop assistant writing one.
I was never sure of the point of satellite appearance when the sound quality was often so flat and limited in range.
Harsh!
As a Manics fan that got into them in 1996, it's been good seeing their early Top of the Pops episodes with Richey.
Only 8 shows to wait until the next performance by the Manics in the studio - Roses In The Hospital on the 30th September show.
The 5 August episode was broadcast the night before my eldest was born. By mid day the next day, I was a dad.
As for the episode, I remember Urban Cookie Collective and Take That tunes, but no others. And Daniel 😄.
My tweetings have gone after leaving Social Media. Missing the #TOTP Twitter crew though, one of the decent things on there.
The changes at Radio 1 would have a big effect on the chart also as we move into more of a Britpop era soon.
Radio 1 DJs like DLT had been presenting the same, boring shows since the seventies. Another of the old guard, Simon Bates, would jump ship a few weeks later as he knew his time was up and his show had become very tired and predictable. One interesting fact about The Bates, he bigged up Karel Fialka's 1987 single Hey Matthew, the one where a small boy namechecks American action shows, to the point it went top ten.
I was just wondering early last, last week when The Groper and The Debster would be in the charts with 'You're the one that I want' and sure enough!...
Might be a bit of a controversial opinion, but I actually prefer their version to the Travolta/ Neutron Bomb version.
This comes at the beginning of the period when the Debster declares she wants to do theatre and manages to unintentionally commit hari-kiri on her pop career to her disappointment when she tries to resume it later.
('Shock Your Mama'?, girl, what the hell were you thinking? You can't do sexy flirt. Shoulda released the absolutely brilliant 'Losin Myself' Now THAT is a cracking song.)
The video to Losin Myself is a cracker !
D:Ream – The “They had more than 2 hits?” hit. It’s actually OK, and doesn’t the future Prof have amazing hair? A better start than I expected.
Robin S – This is the opposite – utterly forgettable and full of notes that just sound off to my ear.
Freddie Mercury – “Beat Old Lady” as it was known. Probably the least bad of the “Cash In On A Dead Man” singles. It’s OK, but there is so much better from Fred
Manic Street Preachers – I really like this. It’s certainly my current favourite early Manics song (but then I think they really hit their stride at the point ‘fans’ accuse them of losing it – Everything Must Go / A Design For Life)
Criag & Debbie – Nope. Give me the classic, not this please.
Juliet Roberts – Forgettable but fine
Janet Jackson – Never ever got her. Sounds like every other JJ song
Billy Joel – I quite like this, even though it’s a bit rubbish
Whitney – Wailey tosh
Madonna – Wasn’t this a breaker last week. Minor Madge
Dannii Minogue – An adequate if pointless cover. Some sounds take modern production better, this is one
The Bee Gees – IIITC? No. Then get it off TOTP. And it’s rubbish.
Take That – Dreadful dancing. Middling TT
Well, that was a mixed bag. 5/10 feels about right. Manics easily song of the show
Second episode, strap in.
Juliet Roberts – I only heard this 15 minutes ago, and I’d already forgotten it. Just a bit bland, and I won’t remember it tomorrow.
Daniel O’Donnell – One for the nanas here. Just awful maudlin tosh
Madonna – Another rather bland offering – it’s not bad enough to score a minus point, but not good enough for a plus. Meh
Urban Cookie Collective – Banger.
Michelle Gayle – I’d completely blanked this. It’s no Sweetness, but it’s OK?
Yazz & Aswad – Bad cover alert
The Goodmen – I think I liked it at the time, but it’s a bit limited
Culture Beat – Very specific parties remembered, so I quite like this
Bon Jovi – Don’t mind this, it’s fluff rock
UB40 – IIITC? God, I loathe UB40 soooo much
Bitty McLean – This is also awful. It’s just not for me.
Take That – Done with this now.
4/10 for the episode, but an awful lot of filler, not much killer. UCC song of the episode
I haven't seen the video but the song is a also a cracker - written by Lamont Dozier, rather than The Debster.
