Christopher II of Denmark (29 September 1276-2 August 1332) was King of Denmark from 12 November 1319 to 7 June 1326 (succeeding Eric VI and preceding Valdemar III) and from 23 February 1329 to 2 August 1332 (succeeding Valdemar III and preceding Valdemar IV).

Biography

Christopher Ericsson was born in Denmark on 29 September 1276, the son of King Eric V of Denmark and the brother of Eric VI of Denmark. He was Duke of Estonia under his brother before succeeding him in 1319, and, as he was prevented from taxing the Catholic Church or his nobles, he levied disastrous taxes on the German territories and peasants under his control. In 1326, an alliance of Danish magnates and German nobles overthrew him and replaced him with Duke Valdemar. In 1329, chaos in Denmark allowed for Christopher to return to power, but the peasants of Skane invited Magnus IV of Sweden to rule them. Most of Denmark was mortgaged to other nobles, and Christopher died, penniless and imprisoned, in 1332.
