This trail runs alongside Horton Creek, passing waterfalls and going through beautiful pine forests. You can find the parking area just past the upper Tonto Creek campground, and there is a hiking sign that points to the start of the trail. Due to poor or no cell reception in the area, it is advisable to download a map beforehand to get started and navigate the intersecting trails. In the last mile, there is a significant elevation gain as it climbs past Horton Springs into rim country. This is a great area to combine other trails to form a loop if desired. Many hikers will tag on the Highline Trail #31 and Derrick Trail #33 to create a nice loop.

This a beautiful gradual ascent in the forest. Follows the creek most of the way up. The top has pretty waterfalls and nice spots to enjoy a picnic. Pretty sure Old dominion was on this hike on 4/20. Can you confirm or deny this??

Consider leaving the main trail occasionally to hike along the creek or you will miss a lot of the cascading water.

Pretty trip. Plenty of water in the creek. Didn't make it all the way up the rim (because we planned--and completed--that for our hike the next day). Found a nice secluded spot to camp along the way back down.

Conditions: Fee, Great!

Beautiful trail, stream running fast today. Easy to navigate first half, east to get off trail when elevation gets serious. Usually not a fan of cairns, but would have appreciated a dozen more in critical spots ascending (added a few). Recommend poles, especially descent. Snow last quarter mile.

This trail was just absolutely beautiful. We went off course a few times to stay close to the water and look at waterfalls. We definitely took our time and decided to set up camp halfway through across where West meets East. Perfect spot and very lovely day. Saw several people throughout the day on the way in (a Friday) as it could be a nice day hike, but not as many as we thought we would. We did see many more people on the way out (Saturday afternoon). The trail was mostly dry, but you could see water runoff marks across the trail; it could definitely get muddy after rains or when the streams are running in the mornings. There are a lot of fallen trees, but easy ways to bypass them. It’s sometimes got pretty rocky, so poles helped when carrying a heavy pack. We crossed the stream several times, although if you stay on trail you really only cross it once, in the beginning, so you shouldn’t need water shoes. With the up and down elevation climb, my watch says by the time we had gained 870 feet elevation, we had gone up a total of 6400feet! Definitely not the easiest trail but very worth it if you take your time and enjoy Horton.

Only a little snow, definitely some mud and rivulets, and a warm gloriously sunny day. The creek and waterfalls are running high.
