Christian William of Brandenburg

Christian William of Brandenburg (28 August 1587-1 January 1665) was a titular Margrave of Brandenburg.

Biography[]

Christian Wilhelm von Hohenzollern was born in Wolmirstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany in 1587, the son of Elector Joachim Frederick of Brandenburg. He was elected Archbishop of Magdeburg in 1598, but he went unrecognized, as the Holy Roman Emperor did not confirm him. During the Thirty Years' War, he allied with Denmark and was defeated at the Battle of Dessau Bridge, forcing him to flee to the court of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in 1629. He returned to Germany in 1630, and he was badly injured during the Sack of Magdeburg in 1631. He was taken prisoner by the Imperials and converted to Catholicism by the Jesuits, after which he was released. He died in 1665.
