Abstract

ontemporary literary, computer game, and cinematic history are rife with forms of interactive fiction and storytelling. Gamebooks such as the Bantam Choose Your Own Adventure series of children’s books, video games from early text-based games like Zork to more contemporary gaming, and interactive movies of the type becoming increasingly common through streaming technologies, allow for a different kind of relationship between audiences and narratives.

These types of narratives have been read, watched, and played by adults and children alike with increased regularity since the popularization of the form in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Going to the Movies with C.S. Lewis, Call for Chapters

An edited collection tentatively titled “Going to the Movies with C.S. Lewis” is seeking chapter submissions.   

Having been born many years after C.S. Lewis died I of course never had the opportunity to watch a movie with the man. However, over the years I feel, as many others probably feel as well, like Lewis accompanies me as I watch movies, read books, attend church services, and make other daily pursuits. Lewis’ works shape my thinking on many theological, educational, and cultural matters like few other authors’ works do.

The Literary Encyclopedia was founded in 1998 to provide a scholarly online resource for university-level teaching and research. It publishes biographies of writers, illustrators, editors, librarians, etc.; scholarly descriptions of significant texts; and essays on literary, cultural, historical, and social contexts in which this writing was produced.

Giselle Anatol, in her articulation of the postcolonial Gothic in young people’s fiction, considers the ways in which familiar living spaces become unfamiliar, and how this “represents both the epitome and the deformation—a haunting, in essence—oftraditional notions of home, a place that is supposed to provide safety, security, contentment, and happiness ("Brown Girl Dreaming: A Ghost Story in the Postcolonial Gothic Tradition"411).

Title: African Language, Literature, and Culture Since 1990: Exploring the Dynamic Role of AAVE

Abstract:

JOCPC is pleased to be working with guest editor Jack Anderson who is assembling a special edition of the journal for the Fall 2024 issue focusing on the figure of the child paired with the rich symbolism of water. We have kept the theme open-ended, and invite works across a wide range of disciplines where researchers are addressing the relationship between water and childhood. Investigations into the topic may include (but are not limited to):

Despite being targeted at a younger demographic, children’s literature can teach many valuable things to adults. Reading children’s books can take us back to our childhoods and recapture the feeling of being filled with curiosity and imagination. It can help us to see things from the perspective of a child, and thereby help us to understand how children think. Researching these books and the methods employed by their authors can teach us about how children are viewed by adults, and what adults think is important to teach them through literature. Seeing the kinds of books children respond to and why can test the validity of views held by adults, and give us a sense of what they find valuable and engaging.

In recent years, we’ve witnessed a growing emphasis in academia on fostering greater
diversity, equity, and inclusion, including developing a clearer sense of one’s
positionality and commitment to such initiatives. Writing effective narratives, such as
specific syllabus policies, diversity statements, land acknowledgments, and positionality
statements, is crucial in promoting a more inclusive academic environment.
