Queen Elizabeth II was crowned 16 months after the death of her father, George VI.

King Charles III is reportedly planning a slimmed-down coronation, with a royal biographer claiming the coronation could take place on a poignant date next year. While a date has not yet been announced for the ceremony, royal biographer Hugo Vickers said it could occur on June 2, the 70th anniversary of the Queen's coronation. King Charles III ascended the throne on 8 September 2022, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

There is traditionally a long wait between a new monarch's ascension to the throne and their coronation.

This allows for a long mourning period for the previous monarch.

Queen Elizabeth II was crowned 16 months after the death of her father, George VI.

Like Queen Elizabeth, the King will be crowned with the St Edward’s Crown, which is made of solid gold and has more than 400 gemstones, including rubies, garnets, sapphires.

Sources have predicted that the ceremony is likely to be a slimmed-down affair.

Speaking to ITV, Mr Vickers said he expects an announcement of the coronation date to take place "quite soon".

He added: "It should also, if traditions follow, be a proclamation, because this is the way things were done in the past.

"I have a feeling it's more likely to be in the summer, because people will camp out on the streets and you need it to be warm, so it could be sometime after Easter.

"But wouldn't it be lovely if it was on June 2, which would be the 70th anniversary of the Queen's coronation?

"Wouldn't that be an appropriate date?"

King Charles' plans for a slimmed-down coronation comes amid a national cost of living crisis.

It also reflects his vision for a wider "slimmed down monarchy".

The Government pays for the Coronation and the King has expressed a wish that his service is considered "good value", sources told the Telegraph.

The service will reportedly be "far shorter" than Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, which went on for three hours, partly because of the new King's age.

A Coronation Committee, made up of privy counsellors, will be appointed to arrange the ceremony.

Royal commentator Camilla Tominey said that Charles' vision for a "slimmed-down monarchy" is an attempt to promote his image as a "frugal" monarch.

She told the Telegraph: "There's this sense that he wants a slimmed-down monarchy to make sure that everybody is doing their bit and that there are no, so-called, 'hangers-on'.

"I think this is Charles' attempt to basically look like he has inherited his mother's habit for being frugal - turning off light switches and being green - and generally being good value for money."
