Beethoven cast: Then and now

Remember Beethoven? The family flick about a gigantic, slobbery Saint Bernard that warmed your early '90s heart and made you beg your parents for your own havoc-wrecking beast?

Thirty (yes, 30) years later, we're taking a trip down memory lane. See what the cast are up to now.

Fun Fact: Beethoven was written by John Hughes under the pseudonym Edmond Dantes!

A Saint Bernard named Chris (right) starred as Beethoven in Beethoven and its 1993 sequel Beethoven's 2nd.

Sadly, Chris died after Beethoven's 2nd and was replaced by various other Saint Bernards in the next six sequels. 

Charles Grodin was 56 when he played George, the Newton family patriarch who hated Beethoven... at first.

The movie and its sequel were a bit of a redemption project for the veteran comic, who had previously reportedly been banned from The Tonight Show for his off-colour jokes.

Grodin took a hiatus from acting in the mid-90s to become a CNBC host and political commentator for 60 Minutes II.

He later returned to acting and had guest roles on Louie and Law and Order: SVU.

Grodin died of bone marrow cancer in 2021 at age 86.

Bonnie Hunt was 26 years Charles' junior when she starred as his wife, Alice.

The Chicago-raised star went on to have a prolific Hollywood career starring in films like Jumanji, Cheaper By the Dozen, and Jerry Maguire. She also had her own talk show from 2007 to 2010.

These days, she's focusing on voice work in Disney and Pixar films like Zootopia, Cars, Monsters University and Toy Story 3 and 4.

Nicholle Tom played Ryce, the eldest Newton child with the coolest name.

Just 13 at the time, she went on to star in Beethoven's 2nd and later as eldest daughter Maggie on The Nanny. 

Nicholle has had various roles on episodes of Masters of Sex, Gotham, Castle and The Mentalist. 

She's also the proud mum to a much smaller dog than Beethoven.

Christopher Castile had already made a name for himself as Mark on the sitcom Step by Step when he starred as the middle Newton child, Ted.

After Beethoven, he continued to star on Step by Step until the show's end in 1998. He also voiced Eugene on Hey Arnold!

Castile is married, retired from acting, and is currently a political science professor at Biola University in California.

According to IMDB, he has a pilot's license and loves playing golf.

Sarah Rose Karr was a pro by the time she tackled the role of the youngest Newton child who fell in the family pool.

She'd already played a kindergartener in Kindergarten Cop and a young Annie in Father of the Bride.

After Beethoven's 2nd, Karr only went on to star in one other TV movie project before retiring from acting. 

Since then, she's stepped away from the spotlight and graduated from the New College of Florida in 2003.

There is not one single verified photo of her on the internet after 1993, meaning she is very good at maintaining anonymity.

And then there was Stanley Tucci as the dog-napping villain...

Stanley Tucci's career is thriving; he's gone on to star in films including The Devil Wears Prada, The Hunger Games, Easy A, Spotlight, The Lovely Bones and Beauty and the Beast. 

His passion for food has also seen him release the series Searching for Italy and the book Taste.

The Oscar nominee was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2017, not disclosing the news until three years later after undergoing treatments.

Oliver Pratt played Tucci's partner in crime, Harvey. He was another clumsy dog thief that wound up getting a big start in Hollywood from his role...

Since then, Oliver Platt has starred in dozens of movies and TV shows including Chef, Rules Don't Apply and Chicago Med.

David Duchovny had a minor but memorable role as Brad but he turned the opportunity into decades of career-making TV roles

Duchovny starred in The X-Files alongside Gillian Anderson and was the lead character in Californication and Aquarius.

He has two children with his ex-wife, Tea Leoni.

Similarly to her co-star Duchovny, her minor role as Brie grabbed the attention of casting agents in Hollywood.

Heaton's small part in the cult classic landed her many roles later on...

Heaton moved on from Beethoven to star as Debra on Everybody Loves Raymond from 1996 to 2005, and more recently as Carol in the short-lived show Carol's Second Act.
