On the death of the 3rd Duke of Cleveland the Dukedoms of Cleveland and Southampton became extinct. In 1827 his great-nephew, William Harry [Vane], 3rd Earl of Darlington,was created Marquess of Cleveland and in 1833 Duke of Cleveland.
