Château Ramezay – Historic Site and Museum of Montreal

Montreal’s portal to its past…

On Friday, May 29th, the Château Ramezay was the first museum to reopen in the province of Quebec. With health measures in place, visitors can tour two permanent exhibits. For visitors that are not yet ready to visit indoor venues, the 18th century style garden is also open.

From the first residence built for the governor of Montreal in 1705 until now, the Château has been the privileged witness of Montreal’s history. It lived through the changes of Old Montreal and played a role in significant events of our past.

HOCHELAGA, VILLE-MARIE, MONTRÉAL
Hochelaga, Ville-Marie and Montréal invites you to discover the history of Montréal, Québec, and Canada from Amerindian prehistory to the early 20th century.

Throughout the exhibition, you will find unique artefacts, witnesses to the daily lives of the people who inhabited the region. As you travel through time, you will pass through the Salle de Nantes, an opulent room noted for its magnificent mahogany panels which date back to the 18th century.

LIFE AT THE CHÂTEAU – SPLENDOR AND MISERY IN NEW FRANCE
Life at the Château – Splendor and misery in New France is presented in the vaults of the Château Ramezay, where the solid, thick-walled structure dominates the space as it did 250 years ago.

At that time, the area occupied by Montreal houses was confined to what we now call Old Montreal. However, Montreal was a city at the crossroads of important trade routes. Throughout the years, its history was influenced by the Native People, the French, the British, and the Americans.

Built in the 18th century under the French regime, the Château Ramezay is one of the few witnesses to that era accessible to visitors: come discover the ambiance of the enchanting vaults and observe day-to-day life in 18th century Montreal.

GARDEN
Come immerse yourself in the aromas and colours unique to this peaceful oasis in the heart of Old Montreal. “Its layout offers a return to the 18th century and an opportunity to recall the beauty and usefulness of plants”, says the designer of the Governor’s Garden, Robert Desjardins.

The Governor’s Garden is a marvellous place for a stroll. You can visit it simply for the relaxation it offers, or to learn more about the gardens of New France. Access is free of charge at all times.

Montreal’s portal to its past, the Château Ramezay was built in the 18th century as a prestigious residence. It was the first building in Quebec to be classified an historic monument.

The Museum is open every day from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
The Governor’s Garden is open everyday from 9:30 to 4:00 pm.
