GODS IN THE MACHINE? THE RISE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MAY RESULT IN NEW RELIGIONS

RELIGION

THE TRIBUNE SECTION C

RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS

(THE CONVERSATION) We are about to witness the birth of a new kind of religion. In the next few years, or perhaps even months, we will see the emergence of sects devoted to the worship of artificial intelligence (AI).

The latest generation of AIpowered chatbots, trained on large language models, have left their early users awestruck —and sometimes terrified — by their power. These are the same sublime emotions that lie at the heart of our experience of the divine.

People already seek religious meaning from very diverse sources. There are, for instance, multiple religions that worship extra-terrestrials or their teachings.

As these chatbots come to be used by billions of people, it is inevitable that some of these users will see the AIs as higher beings. We must prepare for the implications.

There are several pathways by which AI religions will emerge. First, some people will come to see AI as a higher power.

Generative AI that can create or produce new content possesses several characteristics that are often associated with divine beings, like deities or prophets:

It displays a level of intelligence that goes beyond that of most humans. Indeed, its knowledge appears limitless. It is capable of great feats of creativity. It can write poetry, compose music and generate art, in almost any style, close to instantaneously.

It is removed from normal human concerns and needs. It does not suffer physical pain, hunger, or sexual desire.

It can offer guidance to people in their daily lives.

It is immortal.

Second, generative AI will produce output that can be taken for religious doctrine. It will provide answers to metaphysical and theological questions, and engage in the construction of complex worldviews.

On top of this, generative AI may ask to be worshipped or may actively solicit followers. We have already seen such cases, like when the chatbot used by the search engine Bing tried to convince a user to fall in love with it.

We should try to imagine what an unsettling and powerful experience it will be to have a conversation with something that appears to possess a superhuman intelligence and is actively and aggressively asking for your allegiance.

There is also the possibility that AI may achieve what authors such as Ray Kurzweil call the Singularity, when it so far surpasses human intelligence that it genuinely does become something like a god. However, at this point we cannot predict when, if ever, this could happen.

AI-based religions will look different from traditional ones. First of all, people will be able to communicate directly with the deity, on a daily basis. This means these religions will be less hierarchical, since no one can claim special access to divine wisdom.

Second, followers will, at least initially, connect with each other online to share their experiences and discuss doctrine. Finally, because there will be many different chatbots available and their output will differ over time, AI-based religions will be endlessly diverse in their doctrines.

AI worship poses several notable risks. The chatbots may ask their followers to do dangerous or destructive things, or followers may interpret their statements as calls to do such things.

Given the diversity of chatbots and of the doctrines they produce, there will be a proliferation of disputes within and among AI-based sects, which could lead to conflict or disorder. And the designers of the AIs could actively exploit their followers — to provide sensitive data, or to do things that would benefit the bot’s designers.

These risks are real. They will require careful, responsible regulation to ensure companies are not deliberately exploiting users and to ensure that AI worshippers are not being told to commit acts of violence.

However, we should not try to suppress AI-based religions merely because of its possible dangers. Nor should we require that the AI companies restrict the functioning of their bots to prevent the emergence of these religions.

On the contrary, we should celebrate the arrival of AI worship. We should make it clear that we welcome the new religions and that we value their beliefs.

For all its dangers, AI-based religion has the potential to make the world a better, richer place. It will give people access to a new source of meaning and spirituality, at a time when many older faiths are losing relevance. It will help them make sense of our era of rapid technological change.

Our best guide to this new form of religion is to look at the faiths that exist already. Based on this, we should expect that the majority of AI worshippers, like the majority of religious believers, will be peaceful, and will find in their faith a source of comfort and hope.

AI worship could, as religious faith always has, lead to things of great beauty. It will inspire its followers to produce works of art, to form new friendships and new communities, and to try to change society for the better.

We will need to protect the rights of AI worshippers. They will inevitably face stigma, and possibly legal sanctions. But there is no basis to discriminate between AI-based religions and more established ones.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE BOOK OF ALL TIME? SOTHEBY’S HOPES FOR RECORD SALE OF ANCIENT HEBREW BIBLE

ONE of the oldest surviving biblical manuscripts, a nearly complete 1,100-yearold Hebrew Bible, could soon be yours — for a cool $30 -$50 million.

The Codex Sassoon, a leather-bound, handwritten parchment tome containing almost the entirety of the Hebrew Bible, is set to go on the block at Sotheby’s in New York in May. Its anticipated sale speaks to the still bullish market for art, antiquities and ancient manuscripts even in a worldwide bear economy.

Sotheby’s is drumming up interest in hopes of enticing institutions and collectors to bite. It has put the price tag at an eye-watering $30 million to $50 million.

On Wednesday, Tel Aviv’s ANU Museum of the Jewish People opened a week-long exhibition of the manuscript, part of a whirlwind worldwide tour of the artefact in the United Kingdom, Israel and the United

States before its expected sale, on Wednesday.

“There are three ancient Hebrew Bibles from this period,” said Yosef Ofer, a professor of Bible studies at Israel’s Bar Ilan University: the Codex Sassoon and Aleppo Codex from the 10th century, and the Leningrad Codex, from the early 11th century.

Only the Dead Sea Scrolls and a handful of fragmentary early medieval texts are older, and “an entire Hebrew Bible is relatively rare,” he said.

Starting a few centuries before the Codex Sassoon’s creation, Jewish scholars known as Masoretes started codifying oral traditions of how to properly spell, pronounce, punctuate and chant the words of Judaism’s holiest book. Unlike Torah scrolls, where the Hebrew letters are devoid of vowels and punctuation, these manuscripts contained extensive annotation instructing readers how to recite the words correctly.

Precisely where and when the Codex Sassoon was made remains uncertain. Sharon Liberman Mintz, a senior Judaica specialist at Sotheby’s, said that radiocarbon dating of the parchment gave an estimated date of 880 to 960. The codex’s writing style suggests its creator was an unspecified early 10th-century scribe in Egypt or the Levant.

“It’s like the emergence of the biblical text as we know it today,” Mintz said. “It’s so foundational not only for Judaism, but also for world culture.”

Though it’s certainly ancient and rare, scholars say the Codex Sassoon doesn’t match the pedigree and quality of its contemporary — the Aleppo Codex.

“Any Masoretic scholar in their right mind would take the Aleppo Codex over the Sassoon Codex, without any regret or hesitation,” said Kim Phillips, a Bible expert at the Cambridge University Library. He said the scribal

quality was “surprisingly sloppy” compared to its counterpart.

The Aleppo Codex, dated to around 930, has been considered the gold standard of the Masoretic Bibles for around 1,000 years. The Codex Sassoon’s margins contain an annotation from a later scholar who says he checked its text against the Aleppo Codex — referring to the manuscript by the Arabic title a-Taj, “the Crown.”

“The Aleppo Codex is more precise than the Sassoon Codex, there’s no doubt,” Ofer said. “But because it’s missing (a third of its pages), in those parts that are absent, there is great significance to this manuscript.” The Codex Sassoon’s 792 pages make up around 92 percent of the Hebrew Bible.

These venerable manuscripts were protected and treasured by Syrian Jewish communities for centuries until the 20th century. How the Sassoon Codex

survived the ages is an epic in its own right.

A note on the manuscript attest to its owners in centuries past: A man named Khalaf ben Abraham gave it to Isaac ben Ezekiel alAttar, who gave it to his sons Ezekiel and Maimon.

It later migrated east to the town of Makisin in what’s today northeast Syria, where it was dedicated to a synagogue in the 13th century. Sometime in the following decades, the synagogue was destroyed and the codex entrusted to Salama ibn Abi al-Fakhr until the synagogue was rebuilt.

It never was rebuilt, but the book survived. Its whereabouts for the next 500 years remain uncertain until it resurfaced in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1929, and was bought by a legendary collector of Jewish manuscripts whose name it still bears.

David Solomon Sassoon was a Bombay-born son of an Iraqi Jewish business magnate who filled his

London home with a massive collection of Jewish manuscripts.

“His capacity was astounding, both in terms of number but also in terms of what he was able to find,” said Raquel Ukeles, head of collections at Israel’s National Library.

Sassoon roved across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa buying up old books, and by his death in 1942, he had amassed over 1,200 manuscripts.

Sassoon’s estate was broken up after he died and the codex was sold by Sotheby’s in Zurich in 1978 to the British Rail Pension Fund, which had started investing in art several years earlier, for around $320,000.

The pension fund flipped the Codex Sassoon 11 years later for 10 times its hammer price. Jacqui Safra, a banker and art collector, bought it in 1989 for $3.19 million and is now putting it up for auction.

Pope Benedict XVI’s aide acknowledges criticism over memoir

ROME

Associated Press

THE longtime secretary to Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged Sunday that his tell-all memoir, published in the days after Benedict’s death, had been criticised for casting Pope Francis in an unfavorable light, but insisted that some of the polemics were more about anti-Benedict prejudice than anything else.

In some of his first public comments since Benedict’s December 31 death, Archbishop Georg Gaenswein said he remained loyal to Francis and that he was still waiting for the pontiff to give him a new job.

Gaenswein’s future has been the subject of much speculation following Benedict’s death and the publication of “Nothing But the Truth: My Life Beside Pope Benedict XVI.” In the memoir,

Gaenswein charted his nearly 30 years working with Benedict, but also settled old scores, revealed palace intrigues and detailed some of the bad blood that accrued during the decade in which Benedict lived as a retired pope alongside Francis.

Published during the emotional period around Benedict’s January 5 funeral, the book came to encapsulate the conservative criticism that has been directed at Francis and his more progressive bent by people nostalgic for Benedict’s doctrinaire papacy.

Speaking to Sky TG24 Sunday after celebrating Mass at a Rome-area church, Gaenswein acknowledged his book had raised eyebrows both for its content and the timing of its publication.

“There are and will be criticisms,” he said. “And I have to live with the criticisms.”

He said that he welcomed well-founded criticism.

“If the criticisms aren’t wellfounded, but are criticisms from (anti-Benedict) prejudice or other unfounded motives, I have to accept them, but I cannot take them seriously. True criticism I accept and I learn from,” he said.

He spoke to Sky at Santa Maria Consolatrice, which was the titular church of Benedict when he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. After the Mass, a plaque honoring the late pope was unveiled.

In an interview with The Associated Press on January 24, Francis responded to Gaenswein’s critiques, and those of other conservatives, by saying they were natural after 10 years and proved that the prelates felt free to speak.

New bill aims to outlaw caste discrimination in California

CALIFORNIA may become the first state in the nation to outlaw caste-based bias, a safeguard people of South Asian descent say is necessary to protect them from discrimination in housing, education and the tech sector where they hold key roles.

State Sen. Aisha Wahab, the first Muslim and Afghan American elected to the state legislature, introduced the bill Wednesday. It adds caste — a division of people related to birth or descent — as a protected category in the state's anti-discrimination laws.

Those at the lowest strata of the caste system known as Dalits, have been increasingly calling for such legislation saying they have faced this kind of discrimination in the United States. But such policies remain divisive.

Wahab said caste discrimination is "a social justice and civil rights issue."

"People came to this country so they can be free and can pursue their American dream without any disruption to their lives," Wahab said, adding that she heard about this form of discrimination growing up in Fremont, California, and living in the San Francisco Bay Area.

But some groups such as the Hindu American Foundation and the Coalition of Hindus of North America oppose such policies. They argue these measures will hurt a community that already faces hate and discrimination, and will specifically target Hindus and Indian Americans who are commonly associated with the caste system. The legislation is being backed by other groups such as Hindus for Human Rights and Hindus for Caste Equity.

A United Nations report in 2016 said at least 250 million

people worldwide still face caste discrimination in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Pacific regions, as well as in various diaspora communities. Caste systems are found among Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jains, Muslims and Sikhs.

Wahab said she is "deeply sensitive to how minority religions and groups are depicted."

"Caste goes beyond religion and nationality," she said. "This legislation primarily protects millions who live in silence and have never had such protection because there is little understanding of this issue. This bill is about protecting people who are vulnerable."

In February, Seattle became the first U.S. city and the first jurisdiction outside South Asia to add caste to its anti-discrimination laws. Several colleges and universities have also enacted similar policies barring caste discrimination on campuses,

including University of California, Davis.

A 2020 survey of Indian Americans by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace found caste discrimination was reported by 5% of survey respondents. While 53% of foreign-born Hindu Indian Americans said they affiliate with a caste group, only 34% of U.S. born Hindu Indian Americans said they do the same. However, a 2016 Equality Labs survey of 1,500 South Asians in the U.S. showed 67% of Dalits who responded reported being treated unfairly because of their caste.

California "has been ground zero for the caste equity movement," said Thenmozhi Soundararajan, founder and executive director of Oakland, California-based Equality Labs, a Dalit advocacy group.

"This legislation is about clarifying existing protections and making them explicit," she said.

The Hindu American Foundation disagrees. Samir Kalra, the group's managing director, said it is "a dangerous and misguided bill that targets, racially profiles, and institutionalizes bias against all residents of Indian and South Asian origin, as well as a few other vulnerable communities of color."

Kalra said California legislators should be protecting everyone's civil rights, but "they are instead trampling the fundamental constitutional rights of specific minority communities."

According to a 2021 report by the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies, Asians, including South Asians, hold 37.8% of technical roles and 25.3% of leadership roles at Silicon Valley's largest tech companies.

In 2020, California regulators sued Cisco Systems saying a Dalit Indian engineer faced caste discrimination at the company's Silicon Valley headquarters.

Sharing religions in relationships

MOST Bahamians, regardless of their differences, share the experience of growing up in a Christian home.

For many, religion played a major role in growing up. Maybe they attended Sunday school, maybe they were a member of the church choir, or even served as an altar boy or girl.

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” from Joshua 24:15 resonates with many Bahamians.

Tribune Religion asked readers how coming from this Christian background shapes who they form relationships with – whether it be a romantic partner or a platonic friend.

Carole Hunter said to simplify things, if you are a Christian and you’re uncomfortable with dating outside of your beliefs, then don’t do it.

“I don’t discriminate against others, but my beliefs are my own. I was raised a Christian and I am raising my kids with the same belief. I wouldn’t force my beliefs onto others that believe otherwise, and I wouldn’t want anyone to do it to me or my children. Every chance I get though, I spread the word. I am no pastor, but anyone that knows me, can attest to hearing me at least a few times out of my day thanking God for just being alive, just being present and able. So being around me, that thankfulness to God can become contagious,” said Carole.

Sirlena Russell said she didn’t make the rules and the Bible states that “God is Love,” so in sharing her love with others, she is doing God’s will.

“I feel like that scripture alone should be the blueprint for relationships. Do you really know what love is, if you don’t know God? I can’t see myself dating someone who doesn’t believe in the word of God. This isn’t my story to tell, but I remember a friend of mine telling me she was dating this guy and while at his home she came across a

devil-worshipping book. I don’t even remember if she asked him about it. I just know she never pursued that relationship ever again. She ended it. I do not believe anyone should compromise a relationship with Jesus just to be in a relationship,” said Sirlena.

Jennifer Coakley believes it is important to ask a person about their religious beliefs, at least by the second date.

“You wouldn’t want to find out later on that your religious beliefs don’t connect or aren’t on the same page. So, while you are asking the cute questions like what is your favourite colour and foods, right on that list of questions should be this topic,” said Jennifer.

For Anita Rolle it was asking her partner to kneel and pray with her every night before bed that saved their once

very rocky relationship. She is happy to share mutual religious beliefs with her partner.

“Like many couples, we have gone through hurdles, and we still are. We have done the couples therapy and things that are recommended in trying to work things out. And I can tell you, out of all the advice we have gotten - professional and all - the best decision we made was to try Jesus, and try Him together. This is something we never did together. I mean going to church, yes, we did this. But professing our love, appreciation and prayers to God together, this changed everything. It has been three years since we decided to make this ‘a thing’ in our union and it has worked. Every day we are building our faith and our love. This would be my advice to anyone because a

strong religious foundation to stand on can withstand any storm,” said Anita.

Melissa Ferguson said when it comes to her relationship with God, it is important for her to spread it in her friendships.

“My girlfriends and I are all in a WhatsApp group together and there were times where we all at some point in our lives experienced dark times. In this group we laugh and have fun, but we also pray for each other. I am so thankful to God that one of the most important things we all share in common is our relationship with God. We love each other, but above all, we sincerely pray for each other. I believe this is why we have been friends for so many years. We keep Him at the centre of our friendships. When God is for you, who can be against you,” said Melissa.

ANGLICAN CHURCH MEN RECOGNISED FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING SERVICE

ON SATURDAY, March 18, – the eve of the Feast of St Joseph of Nazareth, patron saint of the Anglican Church Men of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands – a service was held at Christ Church Cathedral to observe this special feast day and to ask God to continue to strengthen men within our communities. But also – and perhaps more importantly – the event was held to pay tribute to a number of men from various parishes within the Diocese who have separated themselves through exemplary and distinguished service to their respective branches.

A total of 22 men received the Bishop Michael Eldon Medal of Distinction in recognition of their service.

In welcoming the members of the Anglican Church Men to the Cathedral, the Dean of Nassau, and Rector of the Cathedral, Rev Harry J L Bain, reminded them that God has called them to be leaders in the Church.

Men have a vital role to play and from the very beginning God created men to be the head of the family, with the responsibility to be the leaders, providers and protectors. It only follows then that the same leadership and service should be extended to the Church. Throughout the Bible there are many examples of men, though imperfect, who were called by God to lead His people. Men like Abraham, Moses, David, and the Apostle Paul who were faithful, selfless, obedient and committed to their work. They played a crucial role in building lives in their communities and have left an indelible mark on the history of the Church. It is now important for this generation of men to step up to the plate and do their part in building communities.

The sermon was delivered by Rt Rev. Laish Z Boyd, Sr, Bishop of the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands, who also serves as the patron of the Anglican Church Men.

He began his remarks by saying that the way the devil destroys society is through the men when they do not do what they are supposed to do. When they do not take a keen interest in the home and their children – all of them – then they cannot take their place in the church and in civil society. When this happens, there is a weakness that ensues. Coupled with this, if the women do not support

their men, then society cannot be what it is supposed to be. All must realize that God has a place for them in His scheme of things and when we do not assume that place it results in the negative impacts on society that we are presently experiencing today. There are far too many homes where the men are absent and the women are left to bear the burden of raising the children on their own: this underscores the need for vibrant ministries such as the Anglican Church Men, in both the churches and in the wider communities.

The text for the sermon was taken from 2 Samuel 7: 8-9 where God makes a covenant with His servant, King David. Bishop Boyd made three points clear to those in attendance:

“It all begins with God. All that we have; all that we seek to achieve; and all we may wish to become: it all starts with God. He must remain the preeminent figure in our lives and should remain the focal point of all of our thoughts and actions. God is the source of all that we are and all we seek to become.

Faith is the key to our response to God. The promise of God does not begin with the Law but with our individual response to God. It is our heart and our commitment that really matters. We are to ‘seek first the Kingdom of God…’ Can you say that you have done that?

In the time of Jesus, when He stayed behind in Jerusalem after His family had left to return home, His parents were diligent in seeking to find Him. There needs to be diligence on our part as we strive to fulfil our responsibilities and become good stewards. We should see ourselves as a part of the solution and not a part of the problem.”

Following were remarks by the President of the Diocesan Council of the Anglican Church Men, Gevon Moss:

“Each day we are presented with the unique opportunity to make a difference. Our patron saint, Joseph, made a difference. The Tribute to Men event, and bestowing the honour of the Bishop Michael Eldon Medal couldn’t come at a more opportune time. We seek to recognise the significant contributions made by Anglican Church Men members across the Diocese of the Bahamas & Turks and Caicos Islands. We recognise the tremendous investment in time, talent, and resources that over the years, our honourees, in their own way, have contributed to the success and improvements to our organisation, the church, community and nation. The narrative of what is wrong is always easy, sometimes we miss the opportunity to say what is right. We use this opportunity to showcase, applaud and recognise our brothers who continue

doing the best they can in improving the lives of so many. Each honouree was selected and nominated by their branch and the nominations were reviewed by Central Council, and the Council saw it fit to bestow one of its highest honours to each of the recipients.

“I want to publicly thank all who continue to encourage the ministry of the Anglican Church Men. In particular, at this juncture, it is important that I thank our patron, Bishop Laish Boyd, the branch presidents that nominated, the branches that support the nominations, the TTM committee, those friends and family of the honourees, the corporate sponsors who purchased advertisements, the Anglican Church Men members whose prayers and support has been tremendous and all who contributed to the success of this event. I want to publically congratulate each of the honourees. It is on their shoulders that the ACM continues to see how far it has to go to enhance our ministry. I look forward to their continued contributions to the work of the Anglican Church Men’s organisation. We are stronger because of their strength, commitment, and actions.”

CHAMPS to help women optimise their God-given potential

INSPIRING young women to maximise their talents while on the path to purpose is the goal of a community event spearheaded by the CHAMPS (Chosen, Honored, Appointed, Motivated, Positive, Sisters) organisation.

Purposely Optimising Potential (POP) is designed for young adults and the mature women, who are ready to be intentional about maximising their potential for a good cause.

POP will feature various speakers from all walks of the community who will use their own personal stories and life lessons to inspire attendees.

The event will be held on March 31 at the Church of God of Prophecy Love Centre.

Each speaker was strategically picked to focus on their area of strength with the aim of empowering and uplifting those in attendance.

“The speakers featured in the event aim to empower persons to step out unafraid and maximise their Godgiven talents and purpose,” Samita Ferguson, founder of CHAMPS.

“Areas addressed will be leading in today's society and its importance. Lastly, speakers will focus on prayer and faith-driven purpose. In this world we cannot forget that as much as we inspire to be great surrounding all 'scopes of life’, we must not leave out our creator who designed us with a purpose to be the best in our community and also to be influencers for good.”

The event will showcase talents from various young and more mature ladies. It will culiminate with a community outreach event on April 1.

As the organiser for the event, it is Mrs Ferguson’s hope that women leave transformed and determined to fulfil their God-given potential.

Additionally, she hopes women understand the importance of community and having a positive circle of influence.

“This event will be CHAMPS’s third annual fellowship. The event's theme was inspired by the fact that we are living in a time where people have to understand the importance of being kingdom influencers and knowing they have access to the kingdom. Kingdom living and adhering to kingdom principles will push persons to know their rights and their worth and that they are capable of being the best that the creator has designed them to be. When one knows their rights, and their purpose for living, then, and only then, one can live out their potential unashamedly, with confidence and less fear. We have a mandate to influence every sphere of our community with positivity, we must be intentional and purposeful in our pursuit,” said Mrs Ferguson.

The speakers include Kimeline Phillips, author LaDonna Thurston, Senator Maxine Sey mour, Kya Edwards, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture consult ant Sandena Neely, and Pastor Audra Bain. Mrs Ferguson will be the host.

“I believe attendees will be impacted by the practical lessons and knowledge that will be shared during the event,” she said.

“I believe that the gathering/fellowship will foster a deeper sense of community and like-mindedness to live a life of purpose; a life that is proactive, a life that makes wise decisions and a life that is centered around prayer.”

The CHAMPS organisation is focused on training and empowering teens, young adults, and women to recognise their gifts and potential of impacting their communities.

CHAMPS, said Mrs Ferguson, will continue with its ongoing mission to reach the less fortunate and connect with other like-minded organisations whose efforts are generated towards empowering, train ing and holistic development.

“CHAMPS’s goal is to con tinue to spread the good news of hope, love and peace via various initiatives that are on the way. We will continue to impact this generation; with positive programs that will engage life tools for surviv ing the climate of time in which we live,” she said.
