Cazzie David is finally revealing her side of the story.
The 26-year-old daughter of Larry David has a new collection of essays, “No One Asked for This,” one of which touches on her relationship and breakup with “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson, and his subsequent short-lived relationship with Ariana Grande, which left her “screaming in agony.”
David and Davidson dated for over two years, which was complicated by their respective mental health situations. David struggles with anxiety — “No One Asked for This” opens with a neuropsychological evaluation she received at 12 years old — while Davidson has been open about his battles with drugs, borderline personality disorder and depression.
The pair’s relationship involved couple tattoos — sound familiar? — though eventually, David says she struggled to end things with the 26-year-old comic because “previously, self-harm and suicide threats had come about from trivial circumstances,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
When David did finally split from Davidson, she attempted to walk back the breakup a few days later, only to have Davidson tell her he was “the happiest he’d ever been,” and decisively sever their relationship. The next day, David learned he was with Grande and had covered up his tattoos from their relationship.
David took things hard and recalls “[shaking] uncontrollably” in her father’s arms on a flight to her sister’s college graduation. She isolated herself in their hotel bathroom, getting high from weed pens, and eventually, her father pulled her from her bed after she woke up “screaming in agony,” telling her, “Cazzie, come on! Your ancestors survived the Holocaust.”
Grande’s fans came after Cazzie via social media, and she says she was tortured by her imagination of Davidson and Grande “immediately falling in love, accompanied by audio of her baby voice whispering sweet nothings in his ear, dubbed over his past declarations of love and trust to me.”
Obviously, Grande and Davidson did not last, and Cazzie says she and Pete are friends again. “I love you,” she writes to him in the acknowledgments of her book, “Your bravery inspires me and your friendship means the world to me.”
“No One Asked for This” is out Nov. 17.
