We went for the garden, which we loved. Lots of planting areas and garden rooms to explore. And while the architecture of the new cafe is a bit out of place, the food and service there are excellent. Best scone I've had in many years. Good place for families and picnics.

I love Carrick Hill for it's house and gardens, it's a magnificent place to walk around and have a picnic, to watch the children playing and see family groups celebrating an event. I have visited often for lunch with friends and always enjoyed the ambience of a past era sitting out on the terrace, looking out onto the beautiful gardens enjoying good food, wine and conversation.
My recent visit saddened me. No longer is there a café to provide food and wine, the terrace is empty of tables and chairs and it looked so sad and neglected. All that is on offer for food is in a sterile metal box on an adjacent hill, which felt like a modern cafeteria in a shopping mall. The staff were exceptional and the food good but I could have been anywhere, certainly not Carrick Hill with it's charm.
I sincerely hope that another café will be allowed to open where the previous one was, I think there is room for two cafes. I won't be back until then.

This gentle old place now has its very own AIRPORT style function centre and cafe. What a design and funding disaster. It is aesthetically an anathema to poor old Carrick Hill mansion. It is stark white. It has low ceilings and you may as well have your wedding at the Adelaide Airport for atmosphere. It is not what you are expecting when arriving at any historic garden and house. As you approach from the car park, the designers did not think to screen the "roof hardware" so that is all adding to the visual insult that this monster throws at Carrick Hill. It was way over priced too for the cheap nasty product they got. The view from the glary hot sunny cafe outdoor area.....well.....the view from Adelaide Airport is better and not cluttered by the vertical venetian blind effect of the stark white railings. At least they could have provided glass ballustrades for all those millions. What an aussault on the senses. No longer will we be able to seek refuge under the old oak tree with coffee and cake, next to the giant hedge. Refuge from the visual and auditory hardness of our world.

Lovely English mansion beautifully preserved with spectacular views back to Adelaide. We went on the guided tour which was conducted by a volunteer who gave us a wonderful insight to the history of the couple and their house. Morning tea was Burnt Butter baked biscuits (original recipe) discovered in the Hayward family recipe book - crisp and delicious. Apparently a new larger cafe is being built in the near future. A lot of families were also having picnics in the spacious grounds with room for children to roll and play on the grass.

Carrick hill is is a beautiful neo-Tudor house at the foot of the Adelaide hills a few minutes by car from central Adelaide. It has wonderful interior, much of it furnished with a staircase and panelling that came from Beaudesert house in England, which was sold off for architectural salvage in 1935. The house was built a few years later. The main bedroom and sitting room are exceptionally fine examples of neo-Elizabethan Arts and Crafts. The interiors are completely intact and the collection that the Haywards made is especially good in the best English art of the period, including many works by Jacob Epstein, Stanley Spencer, and Gwen and Augustus John. It has a very good cafe with an exceptional chef. Hard to beat the Portuguese tarts with morning coffee, and for lunch the duck, the chicken pie, the Ottolenghi style grilled carrots, and the salad with blue cheese were excellent. They are building new facilities for weddings and other functions which could be good. The gardens are extensive with fine views across Adelaide (and a favourite with young families). Especially interesting is the little loggia built into the garden facade.

As a tourist attraction - wonderful!!! The house, the history, the grounds, the knowledge of the tour guide, the welcome from the receptionist …..all fantastic. I often list for people the main things they should see in Adelaide - NOW Carrick Hill will feature highly on that list.
As to the on-site cafe, bring your own picnic instead for sure!!!! The cafe is disappointing in many ways. The marquee seating area has no charm at all, and needs a damn good clean out of cobwebs, and has staff (one in particular) with a matched absence of charm!! The menu items are on the whole too ‘restauranty’ for a cafe and far too overpriced. The squid snack for $24 was stupidly overpriced for just a few mouthfuls … and $49 for a main course piece of whiting - and then you buy chips separately!!! The small but still tasty chicken pie had the most pathetic limp side accompaniment of some veg that was completely unmemorable and added nothing. It brought down the dish. Two of the diners seemed happy with the potato cake part of their all day breakfast style dishes. Wow!?!? Pretty unfortunate to spend so much on so little.
The cafe really could have made the visit to Carrick Hill extra special.

Very disappointing service today at Carrick hill cafe. When we arrived at the marquee my first impressions was the lack of atmosphere, no music playing. Instead one of the waitresses kids was seating at a table with the full volume sounds on his game. We asked if he could turn it down or put head phones in which they thankfully did, not the end of the world but really set the tone of are lunch. We ordered drinks got the first 3 after 25 mins then 2 more 5 mins later. One still missing, no server around to help, so I went up and asked where the last drink was, no appologie. Instead ' he forgot to put it through, everyone makes mistakes we are only human' said in an extremely rude way. 40 mins in and the 6 of us finally get our drinks. The $20 cocktail tasted like it had no alchol in, when we questioned this. We were met with 'what's the problem' then an aggressive and defensive response where she explained she had free proured a generous serving. This is not only illegal but didnt give us any reassurance of how many shots were in the drink. The food came only 5 of us got our meal, it took 10 mins for the last dish to come out and again we had to ask where it was. The food was really good hence the 2 stars. This resturant is very confused. Fine dinning food with expensive prices. But awful service, completely forgotten about in the marquee. Everytime something was wrong I had to keep walking in to speak to someone. At the end had to again go up to get the bill, I tried to explain what a bad experience we had. This is obviously the normal level of customer service as the 2 ladies took no responsibility for the awful service. They extremely reluctantly took 1 of the cocktail off the bill. I still do not believe that lunch was worth the money we paid. Obviously we understand things go wrong in a resturants and sometimes you need to bring your kids into work. The issue was how are problems were dealt with. Really felt like we were being punished for initially complaining. Would not recommend visiting and will not be returning.

If you are in the area, make sure you stop here. The restored mansion has artwork and several gardens, including one dedicated to Alister Clark, a top Aussie rose breeder.

I usually don't get excited about "cultural tours" but this was exceptional.
There is lots of art to admire, if you are into that, but I just wanted to see the the house and gardens, which are magnificent
It was refreshing to hear about the history and philanthropic aspect of the past owners. Most admirable.
