Rebel Rising: Rebel Wilson In Conversation with Rennae Stubbs

Published

on

On Mondayctress, comedian, writer, singer, and producer Rebel Wilson takes to The Town Hall stage to discuss her highly-anticipated memoir. Fellow Aussie, the tennis legend Rennae Stubbs joins her in what promises to be a funny and touching evening of storytelling from one of Hollywood’s brightest stars! All tickets come with a book. In Partnership with Strand Books.

From the scene-stealing star of Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids comes a refreshingly candid, hilarious, and inspiring book about her unconventional journey to Hollywood success and loving herself.

For decades, Rebel Wilson had single-mindedly focused on her career, making a name for herself through her iconic roles in Pitch Perfect, Bridesmaids, and Isn’t It Romantic. Now, she’s ready to chronicle the emotional and physical lessons she learned, as well as her most embarrassing experiences. A malaria-induced hallucination? An all-style martial arts fighting tournament? Junior handling at dog shows? And this was all BEFORE she moved to Hollywood!

Rebel Rising follows Rebel Wilson’s incredible journey of “making it,” constantly questioning, “Am I good enough? Will I ever find love? Will I ever change and become healthy?” Rebel writes for the first time about the most personal and important moments in her life—from fertility issues, weight gain and loss, sexuality, overcoming shyness, rejections, and, well…okay there’s at least one story thrown in about Brad Pitt! It’s all here. This memoir shows us how to love ourselves while making us laugh uncontrollably.

Hudson River Park is a 550-acre recreational oasis running from Chambers Street to 59th Street bringing much-needed, green open space to millions of New Yorkers. Hudson River Park is NOT a city park and relies on private donations and community support to keep the Park green, clean and growing.

The Playground Committee works to gather support from the local community and raise funds for education, play areas, sports fields, children’s programs and more. Since the Playground Committee’s inception, their advocacy efforts have made a profound impact, and the Committee has raised $3.6 million to benefit the Park.

The funds raised at HRPK Friends’ Playground Committee Luncheon support hundreds of free public education and environmental sustainability programs, including special events for families and children, and the Park’s sports courts and fields where countless children have learned to play team sports. This includes the maintenance and care of the new 4,000-square-foot Pier 26 Science Playground that opened in January where children can climb, slide and be inspired by wildlife and the Hudson River nature and habitat. This imaginative play space was made possible with the help of the Playground Committee and the historic $3.5 million fundraising campaign successfully completed by Hudson River Park Friends.

The children of New York City will be dazzled again, when the fifth playground in Hudson River Park, located on Pier 97, opens this Spring. Funds raised at the Luncheon will help support the maintenance and free programming at this new public pier.

The Playground Committee Luncheon’s Presenting Sponsor was Terez.  Terez was founded in NYC by Zara Terez Tisch to spread joy and positivity in the world. HALL & COSTELLO — (Via Ultimate Classic Rock) Elvis Costello and Daryl Hall will hit the road together this summer, performing across North America.

The trek will begin on June 2 in Troutdale, Oregon and then make its way east with shows scheduled in Toronto, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and more.

Tickets will be available starting March 15.

Forty years ago, Hall appeared on one of Costello’s albums, 1984’s Goodbye Cruel World, singing harmony vocals on a song called “The Only Flame in Town.” Hall also appeared in the song’s music video.

“Daryl made the rest of us look as if we had just crawled out of a hedge,” Costello later wrote in liner notes  for the LP. “My humor wasn’t helped by the record company representative shrieking at the makeup girl: ‘Make him look handsome’ as I was about to go under the pancake. Ah! The ’80s.”

When I read this, I immediately reach out to our inside man on the Left Coast “Mr. Knickart” and he too said he was caught off guard by the announcement. His response was that it looks as though we’ll never see a Hall & Oates finale tour. That may well be, but Costello is an interesting choice. For me, I actually though he might tour with Robert Fripp who did his brilliant 1977 solo album Sacred Songs – which RCA took 3 years tio release.

This whole Hall & Oates imbroglio has been handled very, very poorly. I know their manager and can’t believe he sanctioned this; which means maybe Hall did on his own. Sad for sure after a brilliant run for Hall & Oates. Sad.

Jennifer Lynch

SHORT TAKES — The penultimate Feud: Swans episode aired Thursday night -dealing with the passing of Babe Paley- and was the best episode yet. Directed to Jennifer Lynch (David’s daughter), it was just stunningly good. As I’ve said, the best thing I’ve seen on TV in years …

Hollywood-Roger Friedman said a re-make of 1981’s Body Heat -40 years later- is being discussed. My take: Don’t do it. Can’t remake a classic like that. No way Jose … President Biden sure was amped up for his State of the Union missive. Funniest comment from Deadline: Feisty? More like unhinged. Biden screamed the entire speech. Seriously, get this man into a death metal band. That kind of endurance is impressive

Kjersti Long

17-old wunderkind Kjersti Long was interveiwed by NEWHD’s Zach Martin on the release of her new single, “Sad Song.” Here it is: https://newhdmedia.com/echoes-of-empowerment-kjersti-longs-resonant-journey-from-child-prodigy-to-2024s-music-luminary/?fbclid=IwAR0y49otgyGlIOILzMtlz3k0Tth9E26YUyoiUtLJoCF5lf7Qo-Ll2qnLpIg

… Robert DeNiro with Bill Maher said one role that he passed up was Jonathan Demme’s brilliant Hannibal Lecter in Silence Of The Lambs. Anthony Hopkins made that role his for sure, but I’m wondering what DeNiro would have brought. Interesting for sure … Here’s Micky Dolenz on NPR Radio talking about his American Pop Flashback PBS show: https://www.kvcrnews.org/2024-03-07/micky-dolenz-of-the-monkees-shares-new-pbs-special-american-pop-flashback?fbclid=IwAR2nGUOyEePRfTDmg1as_yHFH8Dx1O2moYLWPoh87RhOtiq9a0zc2Sldwc4

Chicago with David Salidor at BB King’s

Terrific interview with Chicago’s James Pankow by Billboard’s Melinda Newman. Favorite: Q: You put out a great documentary, 2016’s Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago, but have you thought about writing an autobiography? A: We’ve been approached by several writers. If you do a book, you’ve got to tell the whole story. Our manager said, if you guys told the whole story, you’d all be in prison. I mean, there’s been drugs, alcohol, ex-wives, affairs. All that stuff that’s going on, the seedy underbelly. It’s part of life. And I don’t know if there’s any lifestyle that’s more conducive to being a bad boy than what we do. So, there’s things that you can talk about and things that you cannot talk about” … Thursday in NYC Nello restaurant closed. A staple for sure on high-end Madison Avenue for years, it was a great spot. To me, only Patsy’s and Fontana Di Trevi – now closed- were true rivals … Dave Libert -of The Happenings- passed. Check out this story from Best Classic Bands:https://bestclassicbands.com/david-libert-obituary-happenings-alice-cooper-2-20-24/

Midnight Moment: Storms

Published

on

Every night in March, London-based Italian artist Quayola takes over Times Square with Storms, a mesmerizing depiction of deep-sea waves that engages and reimagines canonical imagery, particularly landscape painting, through the use of contemporary technology. Recognized for a multifaceted practice employing custom-made computer software spanning audiovisual performance, immersive video installation, and works on paper, Quayola’s poetic portrayal of the ocean employs technology as a lens to explore the tensions and equilibrium between seemingly opposing forces: the real and the artificial, the figurative and the abstract, the old and the new.

Storms comes to life with high-definition footage of Cornwall, England’s stormy seas, captured by state-of-the-art tools. This recording thus serves as a dataset which Quayola transforms into a digitally rendered landscape painting. Within the video artwork, waves unfurl across an ethereal expanse and storms paint themselves over the flow of time. By melding human ingenuity with technological prowess, the artist investigates the long-contemplated social hierarchy between nature and technology with the development of a fresh aesthetic dimension.

Storms is presented in collaboration with Artnet, an online art market platform dedicated to exploring the possibilities of digital art and enriching dialogues at the intersection of art and technology.

Artnet’s co-presentation of Quayola’s March Midnight Moment marks the launch of an ongoing partnership that celebrates digital art in the heart of New York City. “Lending artists the iconic canvas of New York City’s Times Square, Midnight Moment stands as one of the most distinctive digital art programs. Artnet is thrilled to join forces with Times Square Arts to bring this immersive experience to our global online community,” said Jiayin Chen, Vice President at Artnet.

Quayola employs technology as a lens to explore the tensions and equilibriums between seemingly opposing forces: the real and artificial, figurative and abstract, old and new. Constructing immersive installations, he engages with and re-imagines canonical imagery through contemporary technology. Landscape painting, classical sculpture and iconography are some of the historical aesthetics that serve as a point of departure for Quayola’s hybrid compositions. His varied practice, all deriving from custom computer software, also includes audiovisual performance, immersive video installations, sculpture, and works on paper.

If you have wondered what to do with all those boxes you have acquired from all those Amazon deliveries puppeteer, Brad Shur, has an answer. His Cardboard Explosion! is a one-of-a-kind puppetry experience that will delight and inspire children of all ages. On March 16, Brad brings his show to Flushing Town Hall in Flushing Queens.

Brad Shur and one of his creations

The materials he uses for his puppet creations are only repurposed cardboard and the imagination of his audience. This 50-minute improvisational show is fueled by the interaction with those in the theater. He transforms simple cardboard shapes into elaborate puppet characters and brings them to life  based on the input from those in attendance. Heroes are created, adventures are brought to life and dragons and other mythical creatures bring drama and fun to the festivities. All shows are different based on the audience input and each show is comprised of four different stories, so everyone has a chance to add their ideas to the performance.

The stories come to life

Mr Shur is a puppet builder, puppeteer and arts educator who has a Youtube channel that instructs viewers on how to build their own puppets. www.youtube.com/@paperheartpuppets9636. He founded Paper Heart Puppets, an organization dedicated to sharing and expanding the art of puppetry. After years of teaching puppetry in Brookline, Massachusetts, the organization is now headquartered in Poughkeepsie, New York; the company offers touring shows, workshops, and custom puppet building.

Each puppet has its own personality

Queens is the most ethnically diverse borough in the world and puppetry and imagination transcend all cultures so Cardboard Explosion! will appeal to all children.“We are thrilled to bring Cardboard Explosion! back to Queens,” says Flushing Town Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director, Ellen Kodadek. “Brad Shur has such great energy on stage, and families are guaranteed to have a blast taking part in his creative process!”

Cardboard Explosion!

Reusing materials such as cardboard is a wonderful introduction to the need for recycling. As the 52nd Earth Day approaches on April 22, this is will be both a fun outing for the children with a hidden lesson on how they can help the environment and maintain the planet for their futures.

“Cardboard Explosion! is a wonderfully immersive arts education experience that teaches children about reusing materials—everything in the show is made from repurposed cardboard,” says Flushing Town Hall’s Director of Education & Public Programs, Gabrielle M. Hamilton. “We love to inspire children to create their own puppets at home using what they learned through the show and workshop, and hope you will join us!“

The Flushing Town Hall is a landmark building dating from 1862. The Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts (FCCA) serves as stewards of Flushing Town Hall, restoring, managing and programming cultural and educational events for the community. Queens is the birthplace of Jazz and has been the home to Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gilespie, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, John Coltrane and more and the FCCA is dedicated to bring music and culture to all five boroughs And owing to the diversity of the community Korean, Chinese, South Asian and Latin American programs are also part of their calendar of cultural events.

Tickets to the 1:00 PM workshop are $5 for all (recommended for ages 8 and up). Tickets to the 2:15 PM family show are $15 for adults, $12 for members, seniors, and students with ID, and $8 for children (recommended for ages 5 and up.)
