Product Description
A terrified young baby-sitter...an incessantly ringing phone...and whispered threats set the stage for one of the most suspenseful chillers ever filmed. Carol Kane stars as the baby-sitter who is tormented by a series of ominous phone calls until a compulsive cop (Charles Durning) is brought on thescene to apprehend the psychotic killer. Seven years later, however, the nightmare begins again when the madman returns to mercilessly haunt Kane, now a wife and mother. No longer a naive girl, though still terrified, but prepared, she moves boldly to thwart the maniac's attack in scenes that culminate in a nerve-shattering conclusion.

Plot: When a lonely babysitter puts the id to bed, she gets creepy phone calls from a stranger. Eventually she runs to check on them, only to find the kids dead. The killer is apprehended and placed in an institution. Wanting to fit in society, the killer breaks out of his "prison". The man is discovered to be a lonely ill individual struggling to not only fit in society but deal with his worsening illness. What follows is a highly suspenseful-action-horror film that has a shock of an ending.
Afterthoughts: Many people dislike the middle portion of the film, they feel that it's dull and unnecessary. I disagree it's my favorite part of the film, I prefer my killer's to be more characterized rather than the same old Michael Myers portrayal. I think people don't like it because we get to know the killer more and people don't want that. They don't want to identify with that character because they want to dislike that character. People have a one sided view of people who do sick things like this, they view them as inhuman monsters, however when they come to know the character more it's harder for them to route for their death because they're more humanized. For some since the killer is revealed they feel he/she is less frightening but I disagree, while you do feel sorry for the sicko you can't helped but be creeped out by him as well. The characters are strong, the acting is phenomenal, there's a ton of suspense, the writing is fantastic, the cinematography is nice, it's got a creepy atmosphere, and the dialogue is great. Overall When a Stranger Calls is a terrific little horror picture, and one of the best from the 70s. It falls in the same vein of films like John Carpenter's Someone's Watching Me (1978), Black Christmas (1974), Eyes of a Stranger (1980), Maniac (1980), Manhunter (1986), Don't Answer the Phone (1980), and Visiting Hours (1982).
Fun Facts: An awesome sequel was made in 1993 entitled When A Stranger Calls Back, and was followed by an dull remake in 2006. The film derives its story from the classic folk legend of "The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs". When a Stranger Calls is essentially an expanded remake of Fred Walton's $12,000 short film for Columbia Pictures, The Sitter, which comprised the first 20 minutes of this film. Walton was inspired to turn the short into a feature-length film after the considerable success of John Carpenter's Halloween (1978). The film marked Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Donald Peterman's feature film debut as director of photography. Tony Beckley, who plays Curt Duncan, was terminally ill throughout production. Because of this, he did not at all fit the description of the killer, but Fred Walton refused to replace him. Beckley died soon after he finished filming his scenes. The 1993 sequel, When a Stranger Calls Back, was dedicated to his memory.

1.) it could actually happen and,
2.) it is based on suspense. No blood, no gore, just sheer terrifying suspense.
The two above elements IMO, make anything 100x scarier.
I won't go on and on (as others have) - and I won't be a b!**h and tell you the plot and the ending (like others here do), just trust me and promise to watch it WITH someone else, AND don't show it to an impressionable preteen or you will NEVER get her to babysit....not for ANY amount of $ 😄😳
A BIT OF A SPOILER ALERT FOLLOWS:
Edit: I want to add to my review because I've read others here that crucify the middle of the movie (or as some would refer to it as the second act). I tend to look at this part of the movie in a bit different way. Many here in the comments probably and wanted, and expected that after the first act it would keep up or intensify into just another slasher bloodbath. If this is your hope and expectation- you'll be disappointed and puzzled. INSTEAD... how about dropping the expectation, taking a few deep breaths (if you can catch your breath after the beginning) and appreciating the unique quality this over 40 year old suspense-fest gives you. If you missed the point of the beginning or the fact that something was THAT terrifying although you saw nothing (no blood) and heard nothing, then you missed that this movie was probably going to be MAINLY suspense and more of a mind-f^^k, a psychological thriller, but NOT a slasher flick.
Ok, so from that perspective let's look at the middle. We are taken on a journey from the psycho's perspective. We see him meet and target someone else in a (yes) slow but DEEPLY disturbing way. There are a few veeerrrryyy creepy things in this second act if you ask me, so I wouldn't by any stretch call it boring. Now granted, I minored in psych in college so this whole "study" or second act which gives a glimpse into his doings IS fascinating to me - but maybe that's just me. But, if you also enjoy suspense and actually find all of it way more frightening than a bunch of idiot teenagers getting whacked left and right, then you'll dig this movie too.
Having written that, you'll be happy with your heart rate being tested once again and want to hold onto yourself for the finale....just a warning.
All in all, and depending what you personally find scary or what you are looking for in a horror film, this shouldn't disappoint. But my earlier advice applies - don't watch it alone or if you have to sleep alone that night. I don't still and I've seen it many times!
