Newark Election Results Update: All Districts Reported, See Vote Totals

Mayor Ras Baraka faced a challenge from Sheila Montague. Newark voters also cast ballots for at-large and ward council members.

NEWARK, NJ — Voters in Newark went to the polls on Tuesday to choose a mayor and several members of the city council in the 2022 nonpartisan municipal election.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka faced a challenge from longtime educator Sheila Montague. Newark voters were also asked to cast ballots for at-large and ward council members (see the list below).

If a race has three or more candidates, and none tally 50 percent plus one votes, the top two vote-getters will compete in a runoff election on Tuesday, June 14.

Here are the uncertified results as of 12:06 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office.

MAYOR (Vote for one)

With 168 of 168 districts reported, Baraka has a large lead over Montague. Baraka declared victory during an election night gathering at the Prudential Center; the unofficial results still need to be certified.

  • Sheila Montague – 2,833 votes (17.08%)
  • Ras Baraka – 13,758 votes (82.92%)

AT LARGE (Vote for four)

Incumbent at-large council members C. Lawrence Crump, Carlos Gonzalez and Luis Quintana will be joined by Louise Scott-Rountree. They ran unopposed for four at-large seats.

With 168 of 168 districts reported, here are the uncertified results:

  • Luis Quintana – 12,197 votes (27.69%)
  • Louise Scott-Rountree – 10,417 votes (23.65%)
  • Carlos Gonzalez – 10,264 votes (23.3%)
  • C. Lawrence Crump – 11,174 votes (25.37%)

NORTH WARD (Vote for one)

North Ward council member Anibal Ramos Jr. ran unopposed for re-election. With 33 of 33 districts reported, here are the uncertified results:

  • Anibal Ramos Jr. - 2,641 votes (100%)

SOUTH WARD (Vote for one)

In the city's South Ward, six candidates competed to replace John Sharpe James, who is not running for re-election. The candidates were: Terrance Bankston, Christina Cherry, Patrick Council, Douglas Freeman, Trenton Jones and Cynthia Truitt-Rease.

With 42 of 42 districts reported, Council has a large lead, although it falls short of the number required to avoid a runoff with Bankston. Here are the uncertified results:

  • Christina Cherry - 392 votes (9.97%)
  • Patrick Council - 1,811 votes (46.06%)
  • Terrance Bankston - 704 votes (17.9%)
  • Trenton Jones - 611 votes (15.54%)
  • Cynthia Truitt-Rease - 142 votes (3.61%)
  • Douglas Freeman - 272 votes (6.92%)

EAST WARD (Vote for one)

Four candidates sought to replace Augusto Amador in the city's East Ward, who is not running for re-election: Anthony Campos, Jonathan Seabra, Michael Silva and Louis Weber.

With 23 of 23 districts reported, Silva holds a slight lead over Campos at the front of the field, which will likely trigger a runoff between the two candidates. Here are the uncertified results:

  • Michael Silva - 1,042 votes (35.77%)
  • Anthony Campos - 1,000 votes (34.33%)
  • Jonathan Seabra - 454 votes (15.59%)
  • Louis Weber - 417 votes (14.32%)

WEST WARD (Vote for one)

In the city's West Ward, there were six candidates seeking to replace Joseph McCallum, who is not running for re-election. McCallum pleaded guilty in connection with a bribery and kickback scheme in March.

The candidates were: Lyndon Brown, Oscar James II, Lavita Johnson, Dupre Kelly, Michelle Lyn Middleton, and Chigozie Onyema.

With 37 of 37 districts reported, Kelly is at the front of the pack, although his vote total falls short of the number required to avoid a runoff with Onyema. Here are the uncertified results:

  • Oscar James II - 475 votes (12.87%)
  • Lyndon Brown - 291 votes (7.88%)
  • Lavita Johnson - 359 votes (9.72%)
  • Dupre Kelly - 1,403 votes (38.0%)
  • Chigozie Onyema - 1,082 votes (29.31%)
  • Michelle Lyn Middleton - 82 votes (2.22%)

CENTRAL WARD (Vote for One)

Incumbent councilwoman LaMonica McIver faced a challenge from Shawn McCray in the city's Central Ward.

With 33 of 33 districts reported, McIver holds a significant lead. Here are the uncertified results:

  • Shawn McCray - 1,138 votes (35.51%)
  • LaMonica McIver - 2,067 votes (64.49%)
