With no place to turn, she immerses herself into the underground world of truck stop sex workers a.k.a. "lot lizards," courtesy of her hosts, Sadie (Sam Quartin, Body Brokers), Riley (Eden Brolin, "Yellowstone"), Liv (Virginia Rand) and Levi (Owen Campbell, X). Noel Murray Los Angeles Times It’s possible Swab made this film just to tell a story about the more compassionate side of prostitution. If so, the movie’s guilty-pleasure thrills are just a bonus. Jan 13, 2023 Full Review Christian Zilko indieWire Watching Candy Land is a lot like eating beef jerky from a truck stop. In both cases, you might find yourself thinking, “if someone told me this was made in 1973, I’d believe them.” Yet both experiences can end up being enjoyable. Rated: B+ Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting Much like the lot lizards themselves, Swab uses pink credits, classic needle drops, and Christmas cheer to belie something far more brutal and grim. It results in a flawed but compelling entry in backroads Americana horror. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A horrible, vile film. There's nothing redeeming about it. Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Steven Warner In Review Online Swab’s latest, Candy Land, eschews the crime drama framework so inherent to his other films and embraces pure exploitation, which ultimately frees the filmmaker to deliver his best and most accomplished work to date. Jan 17, 2023 Full Review Erik Childress Movie Madness Podcast John Swab has crafted an effecting horror film about religious extremism and the hypocrisy of society’s recurring puritanical nature towards sex that is far more disturbing than just the usual visual of a literal knife to the chest. H 2 This was a solid movie. Would I classify it horror? No. But really good, nonetheless. Would watch again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Duncan F Watching this movie (and alone) was a decided waste of time...(Asking myself "is this seriously the best way you can spend New Year's Eve?" ) It drained my emotional resilience down to a miserably low level,... it was sleazy, degrading, bloodthirsty, gory, bleak, soulless, and actually....quite disgusting. I felt ashamed at the end of it. And, there was not a single moment of "feel good" within it.... not even a redeeming glimpse of sexual gratification in the action...though the cover shot on the thumbnail would suggest otherwise.... I Imagine the filmmakers would say "well, it was only ever going to be a slasher movie... and they would be right... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review R. T Awful I am a huge Eddy Murphy fan. This movie tried too hard to be funny and it just didn't work Don't bother. Really .don't bother. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Christian K Exceptionally well made with some memorable shots, devolves into an ok but uneven slasher by the end. A decidedly unhappy ending. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Eric A Endearing characters in a believably dangerous environment with a few genre tropes along the way make this a very solid film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/17/23 Full Review Thomas F This was a solid horror movie. It definitely went in a totally different direction than I thought it was going.
