The event was due to be the 'highlight' of the King's visit to France

King Charles's meeting with Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles will be moved due to fears of violence.

Riots erupted in France last week after the President forced through a bill moving the retirement age up from 62 to 64.

Thousands of people have since taken to the streets of Paris, lighting fires, vandalising buildings and clashing with police.

An aide to President Macron told French TV channel BFM that the protests have made the event too risky.

The aide said: "The dinner between Charles III and Emmanuel Macron, planned for Monday, may not be held at Versailles, as initially planned."

French tram drivers have also announced their intention to disrupt the King's visit.

Union leaders have said they are planning to welcome King Chares with "a good old general strike" on Sunday.

Olivier Besancenot, of the far-Left New Anti-capitalist Party told France Info: "Charles III, we are going to welcome him with a good old general strike."

This week King Charles and Camilla attend funeral of Queen Consort's brother-in-law in the picturesque village of Dorset.

Annabel, the Queen Consort's younger sister was married to businessman Sam Elliot for 50 years. Elliot passed away at the age of 82 earlier this month.

Grieving friends and family were pictured arriving at the service at Holy Trinity Church in Stourpaine on Monday.

Police sealed off all roads in the area during the service to allow Elliot's coffin to be driven to the church.

King Charles and Camilla were not pictured at the event but are understood to have been in attendance.

The village is close to Camilla's heart as the funerals of the Queen Consort's brother, Mark Shand, and her father Major Bruce Shand were both previously held at the Holy Trinity Church.
