RAG EVENT – Fireside Chat with Jeremy Archer
Fireside Chat with Jeremy Archer – The Burmese Conflict of WW2
Monday 13th March at 18.30 / The Drawing Room / £15.00*
Jeremy Archer, a former Board member of the Rag who served for a decade in The Devonshire and Dorset Regiment, never intended to write a book about the Second World War’s Burma Campaign from 1941 to 1945. Then, as part of his efforts as a Trustee of The Burma Star Memorial Fund, to ensure due recognition for all who served in that most challenging of campaigns, he began to accumulate, from interviews, a range of oral histories from Burma veterans. These contributions from officers and men of the Royal Navy, from the 14th Army and from the Royal Air Force ultimately formed the basis for The Final Curtain, in which those who served in Burma reflect on key aspects of the campaign, such as the initial retreat, the Chindit operations behind Japanese lines, the hard-fought struggle in the Arakan, the crucial battles at Kohima and Imphal, and the final advance to Rangoon, culminating in a decisive victory.
Either, in person, or via Zoom, join Jeremy, an MA in military history and noted author who has contributed regularly to the British Army Review, among other publications, for March’s Fireside Chat and share the stories of Burma veterans, including those of a Primus (Archbishop) of the Scottish Episcopal Church, of a Director of Manchester City Football Club and of the Principal of Ghana’s Accra Polytechnic. Hear how The Final Curtain came into the world and now benefits the Burma Star Memorial Fund. Then join Jeremy, who has devoted more than ten years to The Burma Star Association in fundraising and bringing Burma veterans’ stories to a wider audience, for supper afterwards, where the conversation will continue less formally at the table, potentially widening and deepening in its scope.
*Includes a Glass of Prosecco or Soft Drink on arrival.
