The ghosts of his own past?his unhappy parents and ex-wife, his childhood playmates, now drunks and druggies?and the death of his aspirations appear to him at every turn in the neighborhood.. When Patrick Burke, a cardiac-arrest victim unwillingly on life support, begins to haunt him, too, Frank struggles to find some sanity in a harmful job he seems unable to quit. Connelly brings an air of authenticity to his rendering of this marginal world, and his compassion for its miserable and impoverished denizens is almost palpable. Joe Connelly's book is about the hopeless decline of a New York ambulance driver's sanity. While I've never gone crazy or driven a meat wagon, I nearly know what those things might feel like. I know what the cab might smell like, how the radio might sound minutes before dawn, how the burned coffee and greasy Chinese food might come back up after binge drinking with firefighters and cops at seven in the morning after a night of body horror. Connelly's prose will take you from revulsion to torpor to elation in such rapid succession that you may have to put the book down and take a walk. The jagged ends of each chapter don't always match the start of the next, and Connelly manipulates this disjointed sensation to an expert degree. While I was sad to finish the book, the ending felt earned and satisfying. A great read.

You have to just let go with this book. It's crazy stream-of-consciousness: Memories, fantasies, thoughts, delusions, worries, and everything else, all mixed up with crazy secondary characters in a realistically violent, gritty, and raw NYC.

Arrived quickly and in promised condition. It was a used book but I might have like to have known it was LIBRARY book. Oh well. Great book for medics, wannabes and anyone who ever wondered what it might be like.
