Summary

  • Abigail is a new child horror villain to rival Damien and Gage Creed.
  • Both Abigail and M3GAN use the same trick for a fun-filled horror experience.
  • Universal has the opportunity to create a crossover between Abigail and M3GAN.

The horror genre has a long history of turning children into terrifying monsters, and a well-received 2024 horror movie has the perfect replacement for M3GAN’s adorable cyborg. Horror cinema often has fun making audiences scared of things that should be perfectly innocent. Jaws made people scared to go in the ocean, Psycho made people scared to take a shower, and A Nightmare on Elm Street made people scared to go to sleep. The ultimate version of this sneaky horror gambit is making children scary.

In movies, children typically symbolize hope and innocence – just look at E.T. or The Goonies – but the spooky kids seen in movies like Children of the Corn and Village of the Damned beg to differ. Last year, M3GAN delivered the ultimate child horror villain. M3GAN looks like an innocent child and she was designed to provide children with a comfortable feeling of safety and companionship, but she quickly turns out to be a mass murderer. A 2024 horror gem has given audiences another great child horror villain.

Abigail Is The Best New Child Horror Movie Villain After M3GAN

The title character in Abigail is a child horror movie villain to rival The Omen’s Damien or Pet Sematary’s Gage Creed – and she’s an awesome addition to that rogues’ gallery. Directed by Ready or Not’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Abigail is a reimagining of Dracula’s Daughter about a group of criminals who find themselves trapped in an isolated mansion with a little girl who turns out to be a bloodthirsty vampire. Abigail has a lot in common with the last great child horror villain: M3GAN.

Both Abigail and M3GAN look like kids, but they’re actually not. M3GAN is technically an A.I. doll, but part of what makes her so terrifying is that she sounds and is designed to look like a child. Abigail is somewhat similar, because she’s centuries old and undead, but she’s stuck in the body of a seemingly innocent 12-year-old girl. These movies use the same trick for a fun-filled, borderline comedic horror experience.

Universal Has The Opportunity To Create An Absurd Child Villain Horror Crossover

Universal owns both Abigail and M3GAN, so the studio has a great opportunity to give audiences a delightfully ridiculous crossover between the two horror properties. Abigail hasn’t made a huge splash at the box office, but Abigail vs. M3GAN would be a guaranteed blockbuster. From Freddy vs. Jason to Alien vs. Predator to Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, stranger horror crossovers have happened in the past. There’s definitely a precedent for the young vampire of Abigail and the evil robot of M3GAN to appear in the same movie.

M3GAN tells the story of a lifelike robotic doll who arrives in a little girl's life to help her cope with the death of her parents. As the young Cady befriends the robot, its designer, Cady's aunt Gemma, realizes her self-aware invention is too dangerous to be kept alive. Blumhouse's 2022 horror phenomenon mixes Chucky's creepy inclination for violence with the Terminator's unstoppable nature to craft a terrifying look at the dangers of Artificial Intelligence.
