2017

Although Brad has a satisfying career, a sweet wife and a comfortable life in suburban Sacramento, things aren't quite what he imagined during his college glory days. When he accompanies his musical prodigy son on a university tour, he can't help comparing his life with those of his four best college friends who seemingly have more wealthy and glamorous lives. But when circumstances force him to reconnect with his former friends, Brad begins to question whether he has really failed or if their lives are actually more flawed than they appear.

obviously i loved it.
(though i do think it regrettably goes a bit soft on its characters at the end, as much as the final scene between Brad and his son is played just right)

- cute Jenna Fischer mom who should've had more screentime
- his teenage SON (Austin Abrams is lowkey phenomenal)
- Jemaine Clement bachelor in paradise
- Michael "American" Sheen
- Luke Wilson has one scene and it's one of the best parts of the film
- Mike White's self insert role of a gay millionaire filmmaker who has zero lines
- the cute Asian friend
- the hostess at the restaurant
- the two guys who work at the admissions desk at Harvard
- the airline employee
- Ben Stiller's family DOG who I really thought would have more of a bigger part...
- and of COURSE the true scene stealer of the film is ⭐️ANANYA⭐️ who is the only god damn character that makes any sense!!!! plus she's cute and I love Shazi Raja ❤️❤️❤️

Well- huh- I'm kinda for a loss of words on this one.
A part of me really liked it, and really appreciated what it had to say and a part of me loathed it for how whiny and downright pretentious it could be at times. In the end though, the movie is overall so by the numbers for the most part I just kinda shrugged when I finished it.
What I do like about the movie is the downright brilliant performance by Ben Stiller. He's easily one of the standout performances of the year. AT the end of the movie, I didn't see Ben, I saw Brad and to pull that out is really an achievement. Actually, the entire cast…

Inner monologue ramblings are, by definition, products of the relentless self-examining nature that's inherent to the thought process that differentiates humans from other species. Evidently, translating that into cinema, without coming off as excessively basic nor obnoxious is virtually an impossible task. Mike White doesn't particularly fight that tendency, as he largely resorts to narration, and some illustrative vignettes, to convey the protagonist’s looming mid-life crisis.
This Baumbach-ish exercise works better than expected thanks to a Ben Stiller that’s more than willing to frequently lean towards an unsympathetic persona, a supremely satisfying reality check for the ages and also because a considerable sum of these thought-out-loud observations are almost universally resounding.
Longing for connection, measuring your self-worth according to a misguided perception of others’ and envying some people’s (reasonable) idealism are only a few of them.
