United Kingdom Porky's (1981) 4K UHD from Arrow

Porky's 4K Blu-ray

Source: https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=32654
Quote:
Arrow Video is preparing a 4K Blu-ray release of Bob Clark's classic comedy Porky's (1981), starring Mark Herrier, Kim Cattrall, Nancy Parsons, Scott Colomby, and Boyd Gaines. The release is expected to arrive on the market later this year.

Description: High school friends Pee Wee (Dan Monahan), Tommy (Wyatt Knight), Billy (Mark Herrier) and Mickey (Roger Wilson) want to lose their virginity. But when they're kicked out of a strip club after the owner, Porky (Chuck Mitchell), takes their money, they plot revenge. While they try to get back at him, they deal with other teen troubles, including Pee Wee's worries that his "equipment" is shrinking, their sexually opinionated gym teacher (Kim Cattrall) and a spy hole in the girl's locker room.

The timing of this is so strange. I just made a post in the Arrow thread the other day alluding to the possibility of Arrow getting this, and then this news shows up, Was this announced through any official channels? It's not really like Arrow to just announce a title like this out of the blue, so part of me wonders if my post got misconstrued, and then a member submitted a news post for it.

My post in the Arrow thread from 3 days ago

I've never seen so much wool. You could knit a sweater.

This will be a definite purchase for me. I can't remember the first time I saw the film, but I laughed so hard, especially during the scene in Principal Carter's office regarding the police lineup/sketch artist.

The sequels? I really like Porky's Revenge (part III) as it has a lot in common with the original, but of course, is not as good. Porky's II: The Next Day I remember not liking very much. It doesn't even have Porky in it.

Fox lost the rights to the Porky's movies years ago. The rights reverted back to the Canadian producers (Astral). TVA owns the Astral library.

Here's what I believe happened:

I made a post in the Arrow thread about the movie getting a Canadian BD release, and saying Arrow probably does have it. This all goes back to the April Fool's Day post (which is mentioned out of context by another person above) and speculating which title it could be. For a while, Chucky seemed the most likely answer.

TheDiscFather used that post to tweet out that Arrow are releasing it on 4K. He does this with all of my speculation posts on here, and then claim them as his "scoops" if/when they're announced.

A member on here saw that, took it as fact, and submitted a news post for it here

Now, this doesn't mean it won't happen, but I highly doubt this particular news is based on anything official.

The original Porky's Blu-Ray is still in print that Fox released back in 2012, so I'd imagine they do retain the US rights (if that's any indication)

Based on some research, Fox/Disney still have the home video rights. Astral Inc. own the streaming rights and possibly TV rights.

The Porky's series was co-produced with Astral Films and Melvin Simon Productions. Fox only got distribution rights in almost all territories except Canada. Arrow's previous BD was through Fox but expired when their license ran out. Fox's international rights lapsed and reverted to Video Mercury Films (who owns the Melvin Simon catalog) who I presume Arrow got 4k rights from.

The Porky's films were available digitally in the US at some point (Youtube/Google Play I believe) but got delisted and replaced by the TVA Films versions around 2018. Fox may have had video/theatrical rights a bit longer, but those are probably set to expire soon. Even though many places stock the US BD it's probably OOP by now as they printed so many copies and did runs in-between that whats out there is old stock.

Kino put out the sequels double feature but I have a feeling that will be going OOP too Disney takeover stuff aside.

Is it still in print or is it a situation where theres just a plethora of Porkys Blu-rays sitting around?

The HD masters TVA put out on streaming / VOD of the trilogy look like dogshit. I cant imagine the Fox Blu-ray or the Kino double feature disc looking that bad.

Porky's has a completely different master on streaming than the BDs. The iTunes/digital version uses a much newer scan of an IP than any of the BDs and will probably be the same as the upcoming Canadian BD. The old Arrow BD uses an older HD master created by Fox (same as the 2006 anamorphic DVD but not the same as the TVA Films stream) while the Fox BD I believe was sourced from a 4k scan of the OCN.

Porky's II and Revenge are the same masters on digital and BD. Source: I own them all believe it or not (not my faves, but they were dirt cheap and figured why not).
