A BOY FROM TUPELO: THE COMPLETE 1953-1955 RECORDINGS is the definitive collection of Elvis' Sun-era recordings in one comprehensive package.

A BOY FROM TUPELO: THE COMPLETE 1953-1955 RECORDINGS includes on 3 CDs every surviving Elvis Presley Sun master and outtake, plus two private records Elvis paid with his own money to record, as well as all known radio- and concert performances from the period. Many of these recordings are rare demos, session takes, and live performances including a newly discovered and previously unreleased recording of "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" from a 1955 Louisiana Hayride performance.

The accompanying 120-page book compiled by Elvis authority Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and is, in essence, a fully-illustrated travelogue. It details the birth of Elvis career through facts, anecdotes, documentation, many rare photos, and a succinct narrative. Independence Day 1954 is when this uniquely American saga begins, less than 24 hours before his first professional recording session, and it ends in December 1955, when the rights to Elvis' Sun tapes officially expire and the singer leaves Sam Phillips and Sun Records to record for RCA Victor.

This is the story of Elvis Presley before he becomes world-famous, and how this amazing young man readies himself for stardom, achieving success on a level that no one could have dreamed possible.

I own two standalone collections of Elvis Presley's Sun recordings - 1999's two-CD set  Sunrise , which contains one disc of master takes and one disc of alternate versions and live tracks, and 2004's  Elvis At Sun , which is a single-disc compilation of the master takes. In addition, the Sun recordings are featured on 1992's Grammy-award winning box set  The King Of Rock 'N' Roll: The Complete 50's Masters , with the demo "My Happiness" (Elvis' first recording) and all of the master takes on Disc 1, and the B-side of the demo, "That's Where Your Heartaches Begin," plus a number of rare performances, on Disc 5. The 2011 box set  Young Man With The Big Beat , which showcases Elvis' 1956 recordings, limits its scope to the five Sun sides that appeared on Elvis' debut RCA album  Elvis Presley  (RCA Victor LPM-1254). Last year's humongous box set,  The RCA Albums Collection , presented the Sun recordings as they were originally issued by RCA in the LP format - scattered across various albums. In addition, several compilation albums include at least a few of the Sun sessions - the 2009 box set  Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight , The Essential Elvis Presley 3.0 , Elvis: Second To None , and the 2005 documentary CD anthology,  Elvis By The Presleys , among others. In addition, I also own two CD singles: one a standard 5-inch CD single containing "That's All Right," its B-side, "Blue Moon Of Kentucky," and an alternate take of "That's All Right," which was issued contemporaneously with  Elvis At Sun , and a one-track CD-3 single, containing a previously unissued live version of "That's All Right," recorded in Las Vegas, that was issued as a TV Guide giveaway promo.

This new Sony Legacy collection, A BOY FROM TUPELO: THE COMPLETE 1953-1955 RECORDINGS, is the most comprehensive issue of Sun-era Elvis material yet assembled. Disc 1 contains the four Memphis Recording Service demos recorded (and paid for) by Elvis in 1953 and 1954 - "My Happiness," "That's Where Your Heartaches Begin," "I'll Never Stand In Your Way," and "It Wouldn't Be the Same (Without You)." The demos are followed by all 19 Sun master takes, plus four additional RCA remasters that were done for later releases. Disc 2 has all of the existing Sun outtakes of 10 songs, plus an instrumental workout of "How Do You Think I Feel," which did not make the cut at Sun, but was re-recorded by The King on his second RCA album,
Elvis  (RCA Victor LPM-1382). It's amazing how good the sound quality of the Sun recordings are, considering they are more than 60 years old, and that RCA did not receive the original Sun masters for some of the songs. RCA used copies of Sun records - some 78 RPM shellac discs, others 45 RPM vinyl discs - to manufacture its single and LP reissues. New compilation tapes were made of the Sun recordings, but many of them were lost in a 1959 vault cleanout of RCA's Indianapolis facility. Disc 3 contains radio broadcasts and live performances from the Sun period. Most of the performances are from the Louisiana Hayride; others originate from various venues in Texas, Memphis, and Alabama, as well as an unreleased CBS radio broadcast from Meridian, Mississippi. Sound quality on these tracks ranges from excellent to very poor, but I give Sony Legacy credit for admitting that many of the tracks are in bad shape (one acetate was actually destroyed in the remastering process). The remastering team did a fine job with what they had to work with; some of the tracks on  Sunrise  were so noisy that they were barely listenable; those tracks, while still not great, have been improved considerably here.

Packaged similarly to two earlier Elvis releases,
Elvis: Prince From Another Planet (Deluxe Version)  and  Elvis At Stax (Deluxe Edition) , the three CDs are enclosed in a photo gatefold sleeve, along with a lavish, photo-filled booklet that prefaces Elvis' childhood and adolescence, up until the time he made the last 1954 demos, and then follows the start of his professional career, from July 4, 1954, the day before he made his first Sun recordings, until December 31, 1955, when he left Sam Phillips and Sun Records and entered the big time with RCA Victor. Elvis returned to Sun Studios only once, on December 4, 1956, for the jam session that turned into  The Million Dollar Quartet ($750,000 Trio)  recordings.

The period with Sun Records was vital to Elvis' future career; had Presley signed with RCA (or any major label) right off the bat in 1953, they would not have known what to do with him, and Elvis' career may have ended prematurely. It was Sam Phillips' apprenticeship that put Elvis Aron (which Elvis changed to "Aaron" sometime in the '60s) Presley on a glide path to becoming one of the most successful entertainers of all time - "The King Of Rock 'N' Roll."

This set is an essential purchase for any Elvis fan. Five stars.

So great. If Elvis died after these recordings he be a legend of a different kind. Books would have been written about him, and what he would have become had he lived. Not many if any artists you can say that about. Keep in mind the era. Elvis was the voice out of darkness the great integrator of music. After Elvis nothing remained the same and the flood gates opened for Black artists. When they asked Elvis who do you sound like, he said Like no one, and he never did. He was influenced by so many and yet he made his own style, sound and that voice grew. He loved the music and enjoyed recordings songs he loved.

When you think in 7 years from That's Alright Mama to say Surrender you just shake your head, how? No training, born with his mom carrying him on her back while she picked cotton! Elvis came from that to a musical legend says a lot about his drive, and his insecurities that kept him lock on with a manager that after the 50's really pegoned holed him and killed his creativity. Elvis was Elvis again in 1968 and 1969 and early 70's on the 1st tours after that like all artist of greatness the boredom started, and again he found himself boxed in and unfilled artistry. Think that in a month in Vegas he did 2 shows a night, most artist would do that many in a year and then take time off. Yet Parker worked him till he had zip left. 150 shows the last year of his life and by then he was not well at all. This is the teenage Elvis, the world unknown to him and before his world would be turned upside down with fame and money he could never had dream off.

This collection is a must for music lovers and collectors, some great songs, some not so great but all unique and the beginning of the explosion to come and the opening of the door for Black music to be heard on all stations across America. Great sound quality also for what they had to work with. Sun studio recordings sound great, the out takes interesting and the live stuff though rough a nice add on. Next to the 50th Annv. Sgt. Pepper release and remixed this Elvis release has been a great buy in 2017.

This set originally came out in 2012 under the Follow That Dream label, now released with a cosmetic change and the inclusion of a newly discovered track from The Louisiana Hayride on October 29, 1955. Let's start with the most important part, the music. There are 3 CD's and all the tracks have been digitally cleaned up to sound crisp and better than ever before, with the exception of the third disc, which consists of mostly live performances. However, this shouldn't spoil your listening pleasure as there are some great rare tracks including "Little Mama" & "Hearts Of Stone" alongside radio interviews.
The packaging doesn't disappoint either. The box is larger than I expected and contains a high-quality book with fantastic rare pictures and liner notes. It reads like a diary, with a calendar consisting of what Elvis was doing on a particular day.
Here's where I have a slight issue. The CD's are contained in a great looking tri-folder, but they are difficult to remove and I was dismayed when I tried to get CD 2 out and scratched it slightly. I back up my CD's to iTunes for convenience, so I won't be taking them out again for quite some time, but I definitely recommend some kind of sleeve.

The bottom line is you need to get this set. Maybe these tracks are not as polished as his later recordings, but they are historic in that we get to hear a raw Elvis defining his style which catapulted him from obscurity on to the world stage. The Sun recordings have never sounded so clear, you'd swear these were newly discovered masters, with virtually no tape noise and a richer, fuller sound that surpasses any prior release.

Ebenfalls das Slapback Audio von When It Rains, It Really Pours klingt hervorragend.

Zusätzlich bietet die Legacy-Ausgabe den Live-Titel "I Forgot To Remember To Forget".
