Sean Astin, of all people, plays a super-sketchy sleazeball villain, a real change of pace for the actor, for sure!
I wanted to have a go at this after I read about the true story that 'inspired' it. It was really bad though. I could make a big list of the bad things but 'ain't nobody got time for that'. (remember that? 😂)
Samwise Gamgee beats a Mexican half to death and tells her "I like to see the look in a cunt's eyes right before I do her". It's not the best part of the film but it's definitively a highlight.
Borderland is a modern exploitation film, plain and simple. It's based loosely on an actual cult that operated out of Matamoros, on the U.S. - Mexican border. The cult was involved with ritual human sacrifice and drug running. A surprising amount of the film is based in factual evidence surrounding the case. The movie itself however is not focused on retelling reality, instead it uses the facts as a catalyst to become an ideal genre film.

What a racist film. Like I get it, the director was blunt about the three American’s political views but it still doesn’t mean you can use an insane amount of racial slurs throughout the film and show EVERY Mexican male on screen as a violent narco or misogynistic asshole. I was ok with Chile’s Hidden in the Woods depicting all the guys as a piece of shit because the director is from Chile. This felt like an excuse for the director to get away with the shit he showed and said on screen.
What the shit where you all smoking when you wrote good reviews for this? I mean come on! For fucks sake, what's wrong with you people? This isn't the fucking IMDB, I expect more from you here. And no, there will be no review here, just a warning. This is a bad movie and if you don't like bad movies this is not for you. I would only recommend this for theoretical, die-hard Sean Astin fans. Even then... well, no, if you're a die-hard Sean Astin fan you probably love this.

27. Day 2 of watch whatever you want!
I have no idea why I picked this, what with the mediocre reviews following this film, but for some reason I have always found this movie intriguing. It does have a cool cover though and makes it look like it's going to be super gory. That ended up being sort of a letdown though. That's not to say there aren't some good scenes of bloody goodness but it's actually more of a crime thriller than a horror film. It does absolutely zero to attract people to a Mexico vacation though, so don't be watching this to get sight-seeing ideas. The characters are all fairly annoying though which didn't help my enjoyment. Sort of mediocre at best.
