Location: The hotel is located on US 321 about 10 minutes southeast of Downtown Boone and Appalachian State University. It's in an area with a bunch of other hotels, box stores, chain restaurants etc. In fact, there's a Chik-Fil-A on the other side of the hotel parking lot.
Hotel: The hotel is typical of newer Fairfield Inns in that it's actually really nice. There's a large free parking lot, small indoor pool, big breakfast area, small sundry store and a small fitness center. Because it's a newer hotel the common areas are all well lit and in good repair.
Check In: I had been upgraded in advance to a suite and the agent who checked me in was really friendly and helpful. I also got a little goodie bag with bottled water and snacks. Just what one needs at 10 PM
Room: The room was very nice. I like the layout of these newer FI suites. There was a separate living room area with a large couch, TV and a desk plus a bedroom with its own TV and a large bathroom. My only complaint is the Wifi was spotty.
Breakfast: Unlike many other FIs the hotel hasn't gone to just to go breakfast. They had scrambled eggs, bacon, waffle makers, pastries, bagels, fruit and yogurt.
This is a really good hotel, I'll definitely stay here again when I'm in Boone.
After the first day of our 4 day stay the staff was much more accommodating.
The downside:
1) The second floor wreaks of smoke. The moment you step off the elevator you smell nothing but smoke. The rooms did not smell that way otherwise, I would have asked for a different room or left.
2) Rooms seemed smaller than most Marriott properties I've stayed in. It was just me and my son for one night so it wasn't bad but I was pretty cozy.
3) The deadbolt did not work. It was there, and you could turn the door and watch the deadbolt appear but the hole in the doorjamb that the deadbolt should slide into was not lined up. It appears the deadbolt works fine but a closer look will show. I didn't feel like my safety was at risk in this location however, I try to be as cautious as possible.
After using the Marriott mobile app to check in, we arrived shortly after 8:00 to find our keys were not made. The desk agent asked for a credit card as well, even though I am a Titanium Elite member with a stored credit card on file in my profile. The point of the mobile check in is to make the process quick and seamless upon arrival. Show a picture ID, hand the keys over and say something quick about breakfast hours. The agent made no mention or thanked me for the Lifetime Titanium status. Never offered the welcome amenity either.
Keys in hand, we head to or assigned room. As we exit the second floor elevator, we approach our room, only to find the door is being held open by the security latch. We knocked on the door, no answer. We opened the door and found all the lights on, the room was very warm and the bed had been messed up (slightly).
We returned to the desk and told the agent what we found. He quickly assigned a new room on the first floor. As we made our way to the new room, the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke filled the hallway.
The room was very tired looking. The toilet was being propped up by two plastic wedges stuck under the front end, like the kind restaurants use to steady a wobbly table. The bed was uncomfortable. One of the light bulbs was burnt out.
Breakfast the next morning was standard. Fruits, breads, eggs, cereal, yogurt, juices and coffee.
Until this property decides to renovate, please lower your expectations before you arrive. I have also stayed at the Courtyard down the road and it’s definitely a step above this property. I will book there next time I’m in the area.
Check-in was smooth, but despite having a sign up at the counter saying to ask about discounted Tweetsie Railroad Tickets (which we planned to go to), the front desk employee said she thought they were out of them, and after looking around, confirmed that fact.
The room we were given, 118, is a 2x Double Bed room, but I can't figure out why it wasn't redone as a 2 Queen or even 2 King room. There was enough room for this to be a 3 double room, or to put a pull out sofa next to the 2 beds, but instead had an awkwardly empty area with a single lounge chair.
There was a note that no housekeeping would be done during stays, left on the desk - didn't impact our 1 night stay, but at this point in the pandemic, this seems like a cost cutting measure more than anything.
Unfortunately, the bathroom was where things went south. There was a large dust clump of sorts stuck to the wall near the toilet, the shampoo bottle was covered in shampoo (it may have leaked at some point, but had dust stuck to it too so it should have been noticed), and there were stains and mold on both the outside fabric and inside liner of the shower curtain (which was also a shower curtain meant for a tub, not a shower, so was too short). Front desk agent was apologetic when I brought these concerns up in the morning, but these shouldn't be issues in the first place, especially during a pandemic that is obviously still concerning enough to the hotel to cause them to pare down their housekeeping staff.
The breakfast was a disaster - we got there 45 minutes before the ending time of 9:30 and they were out of eggs, protein, yogurt and coffee. The coffee was made after about 15 minute wait but we left after 35 minutes and still no eggs, protein or yogurt. it's hard to justify spending money on breakfast when there isn't anything to eat. MANY folks, including me told the front desk, knocked on the kitchen door and still nothing. Lots of very unhappy guests.
