Bulgaria is a middle - size country in the Balkan Peninsula in Europe. To the north, It is bordered by Flag of Romania Romania. To the south is Flag of Greece Greece and Flag of Turkey Turkey. To the west is Flag of Yugoslavia Yugoslavia. It is mountainous in the west while on the east is forest and plains.

Historical background[edit | edit source]

As one of the defeated central powers of the First World War, the Kingdom of Bulgaria was subject to the Treaty of Neuilly, taking from it lands which contained many ethnic Bulgarians, especially Macedonia, Thrace, and Dobrudja, which were respectively given to Flag of Yugoslavia Yugoslavia, Flag of Greece Greece, and Flag of Romania Romania. Bulgaria was further forced to pay reparations and limit its standing army, much in the sense of Versailles for Flag of Germany Germany and Trianon for Flag of Hungary Hungary. By the 1930s, Tsar Boris III had ruled Bulgaria for several decades alongside a parliament and prime minister.

In the early months of the Second World War, Boris III and his government declared Bulgaria to be neutral, but increasing Axis pressure and promises to return Thrace to Bulgaria led to the country joining the Axis powers in March 1941. Boris III did not wish to actively engage in the conflict (perhaps because of the massive trauma the country sustained in the first war), but welcomed the bloodless return to Bulgaria lands lost after World War I, which Germany obliged once Yugoslavia and Greece fell to Axis forces. However, by December 1941, Bulgaria was compelled to declare a token war against the Flag of United Kingdom United Kingdom and Flag of United States United States. Bulgarian land forces did not participate in the Axis invasion of the Flag of Soviet Union Soviet Union, although the Bulgarian Royal Navy engaged in skirmishes against the Soviet Navy in the Black Sea. Bulgaria under Boris was notable in its constant, yet subtle, defiance of German demands, especially concerning the almost nonexistent effort of destroying the Bulgarian Jewish population (except for those in Macedonia, Thrace, and Dobrudja) and Bulgaria's lack of participation in Axis war efforts, the latter of which greatly infuriated Hitler. Boris himself is reputed to have saved many of his country's Jews by having them work to build up Bulgarian infrastructure, thus sparing them the fate that awaited many millions of other Jews in Central European concentration camps.

In 1943, Boris III suddenly died (some in the Bulgarian government suspected the Germans of poisoning him), leaving his six-year-old son Simeon as Tsar and a regency governing in his place. In September 1944, with Romania defecting to the Allies and Soviet troops massing at the Bulgarian border, Bulgaria was in political turmoil. The government failed to achieve peace with the Allies, and as Soviet demands to evict German troops from Bulgaria were unanswered, the Soviet Union declared war on Bulgaria and invaded, while an almost simultaneous left-wing coup orchestrated by the fatherland's front deposed the monarchy. By the end of the month, the country was under Soviet influence, unofficially joining the Allies and declaring war on Germany. After the war the royal family was forced to leave the country in 1946, with Tsar Simeon III later becoming prime Minister of the country after the fall of the communist regime. However, Bulgaria itself was largely spared of the ravages of the war, unlike most other countries in Europe, and even added to its territory by being given Southern Dobrudja, thus being the only Axis country to have added to its lands after the war.

Because Bulgaria is currently a generic nation, It has a very little amount of events. The current events deal with Romania and Yugoslavia giving land to the Bulgarians.

National spirits[edit | edit source]

Bulgaria starts with three national spirits with the Battle for the BosporusBattle for the Bosporus expansion enabled. Otherwise it starts with none.

Second National Catastrophe icon
Second National Catastrophe
  • StabilityStability: -10.00%
  • Weekly StabilityStability: -0.30%
  • War supportWar support: -10.00%
  • Will be removed if Greater Bulgaria is restored:
  • Has full control of Sofia, Plovdiv, Moesia, Burgas, Southern Serbia, Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Thrace, Dobrudja.
Following our defeat in the Great War, the Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine forced us to cede vast territories that now belong to Yugoslavia, Greece, and Romania, and until recently the League of Nations required us to prioritize the payments of large sums of war reparations, crippling our economy and inevitably increasing the debt of our country. The national spirit has never really recovered from this blow, so it is no wonder why this treaty is popularly known in Bulgaria as the Second National Catastrophe...
Army Restrictions icon
Army Restrictions
  • Factory Output: -25.00%
  • Dockyard Output: -25.00%
  • Cannot increase conscription law
    or declare wars.
  • Cannot train units, disband units,
    or edit unit templates.
  • Cannot produce Armor, Aircraft or
    ships
Another consequence of the Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine are the severe restrictions imposed on our army, not only do they prohibit compulsory military service, limit the amount of troops and officers in our forces and prevent us from maintaining any advanced equipment, they also prohibit any military maneuvers or campaign planning and even stipulate the number of rifles we can use.
IMRO icon
IMRO
The constant fratricidal crimes committed by the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization have seriously damaged our international relations and led in 1934 to the military crackdown of the IMRO stronghold in Petrich, dealing a critical blow to the organization and forcing most of their leaders to flee abroad. However, some revolutionary cells are still active in Bulgaria, and most of our diplomatic relations remain in a poor state.

With the Arms Against TyrannyArms Against Tyranny DLC, one of the above focuses changes into the following:

Diplomacy[edit | edit source]

In 1936, Bulgaria has no diplomatic relations however, several focus trees of neighboring nations have focuses relating to Bulgaria. Flag of Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia, if forming an entente of their own, can get a war goal. Flag of Romania Romania may puppet or annex depending on Bulgaria's choice. Flag of Yugoslavia Yugoslavia may annex Bulgaria if they take the Western focus while if they chose the communist path, they may ask for an alliance. Flag of Italy Italy may ally and influence Bulgaria to fascism while Flag of Germany Germany may give Bulgaria Romanian, Greek or Yugoslav land.

Strategies and guides[edit | edit source]

Strategy The below is one of many player suggested strategies for Bulgaria. Bear in mind, due to the dynamic nature of the game, it may unfold differently for other players.

You will want to invade Greece as they are your weakest neighbor so turn Fascist or Communist and justify upon them (fascism is advised as the Axis are bordering you and are potentially more useful allies and the manpower gained from militarism is a good buff). Do not puppet Greece as Italy can get a war goal on them and it would take a large naval buildup to challenge the Italian Navy not to mention that Italy would call in Germany providing they are both Fascist and Germany would be very difficult to hold off. If the world tension is low enough or ww2 has started, justify on Turkey. You should navally invade as the Bosporus straits are difficult to cross. After this, you could invade Yugoslavia although you may want to be quick because they tend to join the Axis or Allies. You could potentially invade Romania but they may join the Axis so go in at your own risk. After this, you could join the Allies, Axis, or Comintern and potentially change the course of ww2. The choice is yours.
