Blanche and George Howard's birthday party
After the largest sit-down dinner ever seen at Castle Howard, Tom Naylor-Leyland, Sienna Vere Nicoll and some 300 other guests made their way to the burnt-out wing of the house. Why? To carry on celebrating the 21st and 30th birthdays of Blanche and George Howard. Raucous doesn't begin to cover it. Think candles everywhere, a vast chandelier made out of 1,250 yellow washing-up gloves - and Thirties mannequins once used in the Castle Howard costume gallery. So far, so surreal - fitting, as that was the party's theme. And, despite the Yorkshire weather, skinny-dipping took place in the Atlas Fountain. Quite right.
