About
An oasis in the heart of the city of Montréal, the Biodôme offers an immersive visit through five ecosystems of the Americas where animals and plants can be observed. It is one of the few places in the world to reproduce so faithfully the complexity of the natural environment and the interactions between animal and plant species. Summer and winter alike, the Biodôme is the perfect family outing!

Address
Neighborhood: Olympic Park & Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (HoMa)
Named for the Olympic Stadium complexes built for the 1976 games, the Olympic Park and the surrounding neighborhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (HoMa) make up an invigorated area dedicated to "Space for Life." Around the Olympic Village's arenas and stadiums, Rue Sherbrooke welcomes exploration of its sculpture gardens decorated in the works of Jean-Paul Riopelle and its museum culture headed by the historical Château Dufresne. Maisonneuve Park offers interactive experiences at its bio-dome, insectarium, planetarium, and botanical gardens. For a change of scene, the gentrified space along Rue Ontario Est is packed with the city's newest, edgiest cafes, where an imaginative, youthful crowd sips foamy cappuccinos. A visit here is incomplete without stepping into the vast halls of the Maisonneuve Market, with flower stalls, wine depots, and local produce.

    Overcrowded
The attraction itself is cute, the visitors can experience different ecosystems and see some animals, birds, plants. However, the biggest drawback of this is that there is no control of how many people are allowed inside. There are timed tickets but upon arrival you can enter with any ticket time. It makes the venue overcrowded and very difficult to enjoy. We started at the tropical ecosystem and it seems it was the most crowded part, there were a lot of people and it was difficult to see anything, we had to spend a lot of time in the crowd to be able to see something + since it’s tropical climate, it was very hot and having so many people around you doesn’t help. It got better afterwards, but the overall impression was average. I wouldn’t recommend unless there is nothing else to do.

    Nice visit
It was nice to see the flora and fauna in the different zones. There's no clear route so a bit confusing. They do not allow you to exit and return so if you want a drink make sure you visit the cafe first.

Great place for all not just families
Great for all ages and very popular with young children especially the penguins. The 4 habitats were all interesting and it is a light and airy space. The vegetarian wrap from the Caterina restaurant was tasty and their is dedicated seating to eat your own picnic too

Nice but needs better traffic control.
This place is nice and it’s great to see animals in their natural environment. Our favorite was the polar region and seeing the penguins. The problem with this place is there is a traffic control problem. They make you purchase i timed ticket but they doesn’t help as it’s overcrowded. It’s hard to move through some exhibits and see anything. They shouldn’t allow strollers and especially wagons. There were plenty of pamphlets in both English and French when you scan your ticket.

Biodome - really worth a visit especially for kids
The Biodome is easily reached from the Viau metro station (green line). There are four different habitats inside the Dome including a tropical region. Each area has animals and birds which all the children there seemed to really enjoy. It really is an attraction for people with children although adults will enjoy it as well. You can buy a ticket just for the Dome or get an annual ticket which covers the Biodome, Planatarium, Insectarium and Botanical Gardens which are all on the same complex (as well as the Biosphere which is in nearer to the city centre). Even if you are only going to visit whilst you are on holiday it’s worth buying the annual ticket and visiting all the attractions over a few days. Highly recommended.

Zoo-like dome with 4 biomes but way too many kids
Located right next to the Olympic stadium and the botanical garden, this Biodome is great for families. That being said, there were way too many kids and families for the size limitations. The arctic section has playful and energetic penguins. The jungle section is really humid and has pretty parrots to look at. The temperate and forests climates had the least to see with not many animals. It's like a zoo with a cool giftshop.

    Over digitised now days.
I used to love the biodôme, it is still a fun hour to hour and a half of animal spotting. However, like the other espace pour la vie museums, the experience is made much worse nowadays by the lack of signs and the need to use an app to get any information. For our group the appp would only work on one phone(constantly closed when you tried to do anything on the others). And on the phone where it kind of worked, we couldn't find all the animals and certain features only worked sporadically.

    Worth a visit
We arrived at the biodome and had to buy tickets for a scheduled time slot. We waited over two hours but it was raining outside so it gave us something to do inside. You can buy food and drinks there. The biodome was fairly quick to go through, under an hour, but beautiful and the animals seem content.

Nice value, loved seeing the penguins
Awesome experience for all ages! I’m from Rhode Island in the US and $22 per person is a really good deal. You get to see a good amount of animals in the tropical forest, but my favorite section was definitely seeing the penguins in the arctic environment. The structure from the outside is visibly appealing with a cool view of the Olympic Tower. The staff was very friendly and the metro station is a short walk from just outside the grounds.

    Biodome montreal
It is amazing how this place is maintained that almost everything is real. Although not as big as a zoo but a family could surely enjoy this. All animals here are not found on granby zoo so it is not redundant and boring. There is a self checkout kiosk so you dont need to wait in line. Gift shop and cafeteria is also inside. Penguins are so cute!!!!

We went to the biodome with our three children, and while we all enjoyed what we saw, we would not go again and wish that we had chosen a different activity for our day trip. The pros are that the ecosystems feel like a tiny snippet of the real thing; we particularly enjoyed the rainforest and the sub polar region with the penguins. There are however, not many animals to look at and as many of them are nocturnal, it can be especially disappointing to not see many at all. In a couple of the 4 regions, we saw only a single animal or two. Additionally it was much too crowded - they use a booking system as we could hardly move around during our allotted time. The various regions are smallish and do not take long to walk through. Our ticket allowed us a 1.5 hour time frame but we were done in less than 45 minutes. One of the workers there said that to get additional benefit, you need to walk through them multiple times but as it was crowded and not overly exciting the first time, we opted not to. The signage is non-existent inside, perhaps to make it feel more like an authentic ecosystem. However, some signs would help to know something about the animals, plants etc in each region - we were left guessing. Our family thoroughly enjoys educational experiences and this sadly missed the mark on being one. Parking is also very costly at 25$, and so overall it made for a very expensive 45 minutes. It is a beautiful concept but needs more to be made worthwhile. If the costs were lowered to include the insectarium and planetarium then it would be a more reasonable outing in terms of time and money. But as it is, purchasing a passport for our whole family would have made this a 300$ ticket price. Not a reasonable thing especially when you factor in parking and food. I am happy that they have done something with the former Olympic Stadium but there definitely need to be some adjustments made to what could be an exciting day trip for a family.

It was something to do inside on a very hot day. The whole thing took us about an hour. A lot of the animals seemed to be hiding, but the wall of ice impressed us. It’s an interesting building design, but the areas where you want to stand and look at the animals all seem to be so small and it was very crowded, whereas the hallways and areas between exhibits are massive. Also there are no plaques to tell you what you’re supposed to be looking for. It’s all on an app which is kinda dumb if you have small kids. Who wants to wander around looking at a phone in your hand when you should have your eyes on the animals!? If you’re going to go, consider buying the “Passport” so you can go to all the different science museums for one price. Totally worth it. Since it didn’t take us long to go through, we quickly booked tickets to a planetarium show which is right next door and spent another hour there. There is also a movie theatre right in the same area as well and it’s right on a Metro stop.

We purchased the Espace pass which granted us access to this museum in addition to botanical gardens, insectarium, planetarium, etc. As the biodome is not a full zoo (there are only 4 exhibits), do not expect to spend the whole day here. An hour, maybe 90 minutes max.

The arctic room was our favorite as the penguins were getting fed, they starting swimming and were generally entertaining.

Some signage around the exhibits would have been nice, explaining the animals in each exhibit, especially for children to read.

This is worth checking out, but probably only if you get the Espace pass, otherwise it’s $22 per adult.

What a disappointment!  First the good:  The animal 'ecosystems' are excellent, very nicely designed, and feel quite natural.  Among the best I've seen.  Now the bad:  1.  Not a single sign, placard, board (and I really mean, absolutely zero) that explain what animal I'm looking at, or any info about their diet, habits, etc.  You know, the usual thing you see in ANY museum.   "Daddy, what type of monkey/fish/animal is that?"  "I have no idea, sweetie. If only there was a way for them to educate us about the animals they house!"  2.  Quite small.  Going through every 'environment' and seeing all the animals only took 45 minutes.  $22 per person for 45 minutes is pretty steep.  Might have taken longer IF WE HAD SIGNS TO READ and LEARN about the animals!  3.  The café/restaurant is 100% vegetarian.  Seriously?  They do realize that most visitors aren't vegetarian, right?  Maybe they're trying to be more 'animal-friendly' by not offering meat products.  But if that's the case, why are they imprisoning a bunch of wild animals for my viewing pleasure?  Inconsistent and hypocritical.  (Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that they should free the animals, I'm arguing they should offer meat products for the vast majority of us who aren't vegetarians).  4.  So much empty space.  Architecturally, the building is amazing, and offers an incredible 'canvas' for a world-class museum/zoo/exhibit space.  But they wasted an opportunity in their recent renovations.  I kept wandering around thinking, "wow, this looks amazing, too bad they left it empty!  Maybe the renovations aren't done?" Overall:  Skip it.  It was a great place when I first went 20 years ago, but it's no longer worth visiting.

Access from the parking lot to the entrance is somewhat lengthy, which might be uncomfortable for some people, and it's not over then, as you might be in line in front of the doors. The Biodome boasts to be a walk in nature through five ecosystems and teaching about environmental commitment. Instead, due to the spatial constraint of being a dome, it is some fairly narrow, relatively short paths, completely overcrowded despite requiring time slots for the visit. You can see a very small amount of kinds of animals in different vegetation surroundings, acoustically totally blurred out by the enormous stream of kindergarten excursions mixed among the visitors. There are a few explanations in some spots, trying to shed some light on biological backgrounds.

If you ever have been to a decent open air zoo, or even to a great one - I for my part think of the "Tiergarten" in Vienna, Austria - you will have seen a much bigger variety of animal species, also in their proper settings, with at least the same amount of accompanying information as you get in the biodome. A normal visit to a zoo will give you things to see and study for at least a whole day, the biodome will keep you busy for maybe two hours. One thing to say in favor of the biodome, it's all inside, so it might be good for a rainy day, unless you mind being surrounded by floods of little kids and other visitors.

First time visitor to the Biodome with my husband and daughter. Some highlights were the gorgeous building, animal enclosures, and all the fun animals; especially the penguins. Though we did have a great time, there are a few things I would recommend to make the experience even better, which is why I did not rate it higher. There is not enough signage throughout the building. There were a few times where we were not sure where to go or what animals we were looking at/for. The app is helpful, but we don’t want to have our phones out the entire time since we’re trying to enjoy the nature and animals. There is not enough seating in the atrium, and this may be due to the pandemic. The building almost feels like it is not finished? The style of the building is minimalist and modern, which may be why it feels unfinished. There could be projections on the large white walls added, or other unique things to keep you interested when in the atrium. Overall, I would visit again, and would recommend friends and family.

*part of my comprehensive review on the three out of the five museums we visited* First, the site is an abomination. I'm a tech savvy person, and I still found the site very difficult to navigate. As a family of three, it was most economical to purchase the Passport for $140. Save for the botanical garden, you are expected to book your time ahead for each space, do so! We were unable to visit the Insectarium as it was completely booked for the day.

I'm not sure how humane these exhibits are, it made me a little sad to see the penguins in such a small space. A very straight-forward experience where you walk through a variety of ecosystems and see a glimpse of the animals that live there. Young Children will enjoy, if you're visiting the other museums that are part of the complex, you may as well check out the biodome. Please respect the animals; seeing many adults hitting glass to get their attention, etc was annoying. We enjoyed the aquatic exhibits and seeing the sturgeon up close.

My family with two older teens were in Montreal for a January weekend (only our Second time in Canada) and looking for something to indoors. Read some of the reviews, but decided to try anyway. This review will confirm a few things written by my fellow reviewers. Let me save you some time an money. If youve ever been to a zoo or aquarium in the US this will be a let down. (Not saying US is better, I've just never been to any in CA.) Parking is confusing, poorly marked and extremely overpriced at $25? There are 4 sections to the building. It took us 90 minutes to get through it all and we were taking our time. Except for the green running man, there are ZERO signs as to what you are looking at, what to look for, their habitat, country of origin, nothing! Although some of the exibits were nice to see such as the penguins, lynx, jellyfish, tamarin monkeys (there may have been others, but of course I could have missed it because there are no signs) the rest could use somewhat of an animal upgrade. Racoons? Really? If you are just going with your young family and you want to show your kids what a real penguin or starfish look like, this is a great choice. The place is very clean. The gift shop is nice. There is a cafe with a lot of seating, but we did not try it. Just have someone drop you off instead of parking and maybe there are discounts available. Overall for the 4 of us with parking it was $98 (2×$22.50, 1×$16.50, 1x$11.50, $25 parking) not including a couple of items we bought in the gift shop. A rather expensive 90 minutes.
