A Look Back at Mick and Bianca Jagger's Shotgun Wedding in St. Tropez
Only months after the couple met in Paris, they tied the knot during a rockstar-studded weekend on the French Riviera.
On May 12, 1971—49 years ago today—Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger married Nicaraguan-born actress and activist Bianca Jagger on the French Riviera. The marriage ended 7 years later, but their wedding remains the coolest of rock-and-roll affairs. The couple had met at the after party for one of the band's Paris shows just nine months earlier, but Bianca was already four months pregnant by the time they wed. (Their daughter Jade was born in October.) The couple informed guests of their wedding just a day before. The 75-person guest list, which included Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Julie Christie, and Brigitte Bardot, offers a glimpse into the kind of rockstar-studded, slightly chaotic affair the day turned out to be. Journalist David Hepworth described the wedding as “[marking] the establishment of rock and roll as a viable branch of high society.” Take a look inside their holy matrimony below.
