Parent: Oakwood clicked for our family from first blush, and our daughter is thriving there. Oakwood's warmth and close-knit community makes it feel like a neighborhood school, but it offers the top-notch academics that only come from the best independent schools. It's a tricky needle to thread, but they pull it off beautifully. On our first day of kinder, I was struck by just how friendly the place is - a rarity in LA! And in the time since, that sense of belonging has only deepened for both my daughter and our family. Our daughter is blossoming at Oakwood, which is a testament to both the curriculum and the approach to challenging students, but also the level of social-emotional support that is offered. She especially loves art studio, science lab, and music class. Oakwood also has truly one of the best libraries and librarians I've ever encountered, and it's such a joy and resource for our whole family! Senior: I love Campbell Hall! All of the teachers genuinely care about you and want you to succeed in life. I love the CHAI approach to classes rather than AP's. CHAI prepares you for college more in my opinion, because the teachers really want you to understand the material rather than memorize it. My favorite class so far has been CHAI RACE and the Human Experience, the teacher was amazing and I truly had never taken a class like that before. Senior: NCA is a strong academic school that prepares students for college. The workload may be challenging at times, but I saw that it was worth it as I saw major improvements from my work. The teachers are also very understanding and have a good balance of connecting with students while teaching them. Alum: As a recent alum, I can attest that if I ever have a daughter, I will most certainly be enrolling her at Archer. I cannot express my gratitude enough towards this community, the academics, and all the unique programs that continue to shock other students at my university when I talk about them. Senior: Overall, Pilgrim School is a great school that promotes learning to its K-12 students. In my time there, I have gotten a good sense of community and we are all a tight-knit group. As a STEM student, I can say that their STEM facilities and classes are excellent and have great resources and teachers to accompany them. The sports at Pilgrim are okay but not great, some years we do well, others we don't. Something I do wish for the future of the school is that they include more clubs and activities for students to participate in. Senior: My school is extremely small and technology-based. While they offer all subjects and a myriad of student-led clubs, the main focus of the school is STEM, hence the technological focus. The Robotics team is considered the equivalent of the varsity football team, which segues into the fact that my school also lacks sports teams, other than the highly-ranked running team. This proposes some issues, as it's difficult to experience traditional high school events such as football games, large school dances, and more. However, the tight-knit community I've found while attending this school has allowed for close friendships and lasting memories, even if they differ from those of large, populated high schools. Alum: I recently graduated from IH. I was a proud panda at the middle school and high school, and my experience at IH was one that I would not trade for the world. Although in the heart of Hollywood, IH felt like a safe haven for higher education. I constantly felt challenged academically, but not in a toxic manner. Healthy competition was present among students, both in terms of learning and athletics. IH truly shines in its art department (visual and performance). The teachers at IH are unparalleled. I keep in contact with a few of my teachers and I will never forget the information and morals they instilled in me. Teachers want and make an effort to connect with students, that is something incredibly special. In terms of theology, IH makes the subject approachable for all students. The faculty adores the students and looks out for them. It is a very diverse school and very academically rigorous however, this is not a school-spirited or sporty school, the students care very much about their academics and those two fall a bit short. There is a wide selection of sports and school spirit to some extent, but those definitely aren't the driving reasons why someone would want to attend Downtown Magnets High School.
