What Are Your Opinions On Nancy?

Episode Discussion

It seems they are giving her more and more of a presence within the show and I have some feelings, so I just wanted to see what is the general consensus about the actress, her performance, and the character's dynamics with the others.

I think she's really funny in small amounts, but if she became main cast it would be too much. I like her current role.

Just like when I loved the minions in the background of the original Despicable Me. But when they got their own movie, they lost appeal.

u/ejchristian86 avatar

Agreed, she works best when used sparingly as a foil to the main house ghosts. IMHO she's been around a little too much lately; they need to dial her back like 15%.

u/RazzmatazzHead1591 avatar

Less Nancy and carol and more Nigel!

u/Muted_Breadfruit4626 avatar

Yes!!!

u/International-Fan-22 avatar

I totally agree!!!

I agree with this. She has been visible and used as a main character too much for my liking. This last episode was just too much for me and I am reconsidering my viewership.

This is how I feel. She’s a great character in small doses!

I agree, but wouldn't mind seeing less of her.

Exactly! She is like the occasional one-liner you need.

u/Sitcomfan1989 avatar

I agree. I love the actress but the character is good in small doses.

I love Nancy and Betsy Sodaro. I think her crassness gives the main group of ghosts some kind of a kick.

She’s the Cheetos dust on a squab dish in a heritage menu.

Edited

That is the most awesome description of Nancy I could ever conceive

So one I love Betsy! She is hilarious. Your Cheeto dust comment makes me think of something funny: my husband uses flaming hot Cheetos as a binder in his meatloaf. It is the best. Just sharing lol

I had no idea who she was until just before Christmas. I listened to a podcast she was a guest on and I couldn’t decide if I loved or hated her voice. But I thought she was hilarious on it. Literally a day or two later I started watching the US ghosts and when she popped up, I was like lol it’s her. I recognize the voice.

I fell in love with her as half of “Dank and Dabbie” in Disjointed. She’s loud, crass, and funny about it.

ETA: Kind of like old Rosanne Barr, but without seeming mean spirited.

Edited

That show not getting a second* season is one of the worst decisions ever made. Inside Job is also on that list.

ETA: * Another season, not second season. Still, same point. Fuck Netflix.

Isn’t she spinelli from recess or am I crazy

I first noticed her as Abortion Deb in Another Period and have been a fan of her off beat, but still sort of dead pan, style ever since.

“Those bitches are stealing our rickshaw!”

She played the unhinged Florida lady in Brooklyn 99 and then I've seen her do other hilarious character work, I was so excited to see her on Ghosts (and to watch her on After Midnight, with Utkarsh Ambudkar also on the same episode!!)

She was amazing in Brooklyn 99!

No way! My fave Cheeto is the cheddar jalapeño and I'll be making meatloaf just to try that out! Thank you for sharing 😍🤤

Not a problem. He made me try it prior to telling me what the used lol. It’s so good

I bet meatloaf with cheddar jalapeño would be delish! Let us know how it turns out!

Will do! Maybe lol

Wait what? Thisbis amazing. I doing this this week. Meatloaf with flamin hot cheetos as a binder. OK serious here, do I still use any bread crumbs at all? Or is it a one for one replace of ground up flamin hot cheetos to breadcrumbs? I being serious. Please advise.

Nope no breadcrumbs or crackers. He uses the Cheetos in their place (I just double checked).

He jokes that we were poor at the time when he first did it. Really I think he was stoned and we had no breadcrumbs or crackers in the house.

So just to be clear... This tastes good right?

...my husband would love this.

I never make meatloaf.. because it's a loaf of meat and it always feels like I could do something better with it (lol, idk, I'm weird) but like I think I'm going to do this.

Probably add a ton of peppers and stuff too though.

Instead of using a loaf pan, use a muffin tin, perfect sized portions, each one gets that perfect end piece crust, and it cooks in half the time.

I used to do this but found I hated washing the muffin pan more than the time savings. So now I use a parchment liner in my 8x8 pan instead. Cooks faster than loaf pan and easier to clean up. :)

It would probably be good. My mom never made it growing up but I’m a huge fan. The Cheetos take it to another level

I love meatloaf but never cook it because my family hates it. I seriously can’t figure out why. They like hamburgers. Is it the shape? Lol @ loaf of meat ^

I can’t speak for your family, but as someone who loves hamburgers and generally doesn’t like meatloaf, it’s because it’s not like hamburger any more — to me  it’s like stretched-out, weird-tasting, weird-textured, flabby, not-hamburger.

Now I want meatloaf for dinner.

Cheese-it’s as a binder for meatloaf! Crumbled. Sooo good. I’ll try the flamin hot for my partner, tho. He loves things spicy!

Yum!

I love Nancy and Betsy Sodaro

Then I'll suggest you check out S1E45 of the show After Midnight ( r/aftermidnight ). Both Betsy & Utkarsh appeared on the show. It's such a fun show and she killed it! 😂😂😂

After Midnight is on CBS, Paramount+, and PLUTO

I did watch it, it was so fun

Her delivery of "it means unfamiliar genitals" was peak.

Perfect description. I totally agree. I like the particular kind of chaos she adds to the (already chaotic) house :D.

Ha! Excellent reference. Jay's menu.

I love her, and think she’s hilarious. But as she is written right now, she’s good in small doses. Though in this past episode it seems like they are trying to humanize her a bit more and show more depth and seriousness instead of just being comic relief. I kind of liked it, and would love it if they explored that a bit more.

I agree maybe they’re setting her up to get sucked off. I do love her in small does but would be happy for her to get closure. Then maybe another basement ghost would step forward as “leader”

It would be a funny plot if the basement ghosts kicked her out for being upstairs too much and she lost control of the group.

She is hilarious! I am glad that we are seeing more of her. I still crack up over "Nice ankle, ya whore!".

u/Snacky_Onassis avatar

That line was iconic.

Best line of the whole show!

It needs to be a flair

u/meineymoe avatar

Also, I think it was her only line and scene that episode. She does work best in small doses like that, but also good to have her in some story lines to help build her character.

More replies

yes! She is so incredibly funny! I love that we're seeing more of her, too.

And that's in like favorite top ten (which are in no order lol) lines from the show.

She is the funniest cast member.

u/Straw-Wormi avatar

That along with “why can’t it be a circle so that way everybody gets their man parts rubbed?”

More replies

She’s like adding a bit of spice to the main ingredients that are our core group of ghosts. But you have to be careful to not add too much spice and ruin the recipe.

u/yesimlegit avatar

I like this analogy. That’s how I feel too. Also, I wouldn’t mind one spicy episode either. If she was the focus or we got more on her backstory. Sometimes I go out for spicy food but not every night lol.

This! Would be fun to have a spicy ep on her, but too much would overdo it

More replies

The actress who plays her is hilarious in everything she does. I love her scenes.

Is that her real voice?

u/buzz-buzz-buzzz avatar

All I can picture is Bobby Hill any time she’s speaking.

u/EngineeredGal avatar

That boy ain’t right.

More replies

It is! She hosts a paranormal podcast called A Funny Feeling, and it’s exactly how she talks.

Ooohh I gotta check that out!

u/These-Emu-71 avatar

Yes, she also has a podcast called "we love trash" and she's hysterical there, too, and yes, speaks exactly like her character. Betsy Sodaro!

I like Nancy, she’s sassy and she doesn’t gaf. She’s the flip to Hetty’s natural snobbery and self righteousness. She doesn’t care what other people think and I think in some weird way Hetty admires that because even though she’s dead she’s still concerned by what other people think (had to get over being found canoodling with Trevor).

love her. she's bold and to the point and knows about wood and water heaters. what's not to love?

u/NoDadYouShutUp avatar

Betsy Sodaro is quite funny and enjoyable whenever I’ve seen her pop up in various things. Loved her on After Midnight recently! But I’m not entirely sure I like the Nancy character in particular. Which is a writing problem, not her performance. She’s crushing exactly what they write for her no doubt.

Maybe they could give her more depth or character other than being kind of annoying. She’s a little like the obnoxious person at a party you’d prefer to avoid. Which is the punch line. It’s not quite that funny.

u/Malibucat48 avatar

I felt sorry for Nancy in the last episode. She acts tough and says things don’t bother her, but she is sensitive and insecure about dying of a dreaded disease in an asylum dressed in a potato sack. Both Thor and Pete used her, but at least Flower cares. I would like to see what her life was like before she got cholera.

u/Aggabagga avatar

I’d love a look back at the cholera victims. One of my favorite moments from the BBC show was the backstory on the plague pit victims. Hopefully they’ll give us that glimpse at some point.

u/Summerisle7 avatar

I want that too, that’s one of my favourite genres of episodes.

More replies

Yes, this. Her comment about not being able to read did a bit to humanize her, for sure.

It be cool for one of the other ghosts to teach her.

u/Summerisle7 avatar

It would! Obviously someone taught Sass at some point. I might make a post on this.

u/Summerisle7 avatar

I didn’t like to see it. I didn’t find it funny. 😠

u/Summerisle7 avatar

Same, I feel for Nancy in a way. She deserves a flashback episode where we get to see her clean and healthy and dressed normally (for the era). She’s stated that she can’t read, which really broke my heart. If I had to guess, I’d say that in life, she was a factory or mill worker, or a servant or cook.

u/KavaBuggy avatar

I didn’t pay enough attention to realize she died of cholera. I’m allergic to the cholera vaccine apparently, and knowing how death by cholera occurs, good god, I hope that never happens. Anything but that.

Yep, all of the basement ghosts died from cholera

Love her, you whore!

Have you seen Disjointed with Kathy Bates on Netflix?

It is funny. Same Sodaro.

I think the writers are saying a lot about someone’s appearance versus who they are inside. It’s a good lesson for most of us.

I love Betsy Sodaro and I think she’s an an underrated comedian. She has such great comedic timing. I hope she becomes a part of the main cast to let her comedy style really shine through.

I saw a teaser for a new movie coming up and I literally gasped and said out loud “Is that Nancy‽” and sure enough when I checked IMDB it was Betsy!

What movie??

Summer Camp with Kathy Bates, Diane Keaton, and Alfre Woodard.

Thank you!

I found her alright but this season she keeps cracking me up

u/azentropy avatar

I adore her. Very glad with her increased roll.

As Hetty said: "It's a clever little thing."

It's good to see one of the cholera ghosts escape the basement. There isn't anything keeping them there except themselves.

I hate how the main ghosts treat the basement ghosts. Like their lives and deaths were their choice.
