A fantastic collection

The liner notes say it all - "the fact that... any of the... songs on this CD aren't pumping out of every pop radio station in these United States is not only a mystery but a miscarriage of justice."
Marshall Crenshaw is one of the best rock and roll songwriters of the modern era, and during the 1980's (and continuing today), he created a number of "should-have-been hit singles" - beautifully crafted songs with clever lyrics, perfect pop hooks, and top-notch musicianship - practically year after year... but after his 1982 splash and the moderate success of "Someday, Someway" - radio began ignoring him, despite continued critical success and albums which were often artistic triumphs.
I have been waiting for a collection to truly represent Marshall's music and to introduce people who may have heard one or two songs to his large body of top notch songs and also to give fans a good not-too-concise collection for their Marshall fix. This is the collection I have been waiting for. Since I purchased this CD, it has moved from my house to my car and back on a regular basis. Rhino always does a nice package - great liner notes, a good selection of songs. They don't disappoint here.
If you are pondering purchasing this CD, then I must tell you - ponder no longer. This CD is worth every penny. You will not be disappointed. Marshall Crenshaw writes great songs, and you will enjoy his music if you enjoy a good well-crafted catchy pop song. There's many of those here.

Marshall Crenshaw never had success that was in line with his talent, a true shame. This release does a great job of showing what a tallent Mr. Crenshaw was (is). A strong singer/songwriter/guitarist with a knack for transporting 50's and early 60's rock tunes into a modern light, THIS IS EASY does a fine job of highlighting the best of this artists early career. Most of the highlights fall in the first half of the CD, with many of the later performances being strong, but undermined by fussy period production. Once you play this one a couple times, many of the songs become embedded in your memory and you'll find them surfacing in little loops going through your mind. Standout tracks include the sublime CYNICAL GIRL, SOMEWAY SOMEWAY, BLUES IS KING, as well as rare tracks like his first single SOMETHING'S GONNA HAPPEN and the B-side YOU'RE MY FAVORITE WASTE OF TIME. THIS IS EASY is a strong collection of an artist who's quality work never met the acclaim that it really deserved.

I recently scanned thru the 700 or so pages of the "Encyclopedia of Rock Music", a brick-like paperback similar to one of Roger Ebert's Movie Guides -- the fact that Marshall Crenshaw is not listed therein is a crime. For the past 20 years he has written and performed some of the crunchiest, most melodic and intelligent 3 minute pop/rock masterpieces. In addition he is a masterful guitarist with tremendous taste and a wide variety of cool tones. Some of my favorites which do not appear on this disc are "A Hundred Dollars", "She Hates to Go Home", and "They Never Will Know". But this is a mere trifle -- all of the tunes are great. Marshall is the Cal Ripken, Jr. of rock & roll -- consistently, quietly,great. His talent is on a level with people like Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and Van Morrison. If you haven't heard him, I definitely agree with those who say he'll grow on you--his tunes & his sound will stick with you, and most of the rest of pop/rock music will sound bland by comparison. This is a fantastic introduction to a great artist. Get it now! Let's hope Marshall keeps on with that sound of Buddy Holly in his ear, and that some of his out-of-print stuff is re-released soon!

Questionable Picks, Disappointing Omissions.

I 'm sitting here with every MC album on my desk, trying to fathom the selections that appear on "This is Easy." On its own terms, I'd give this album five stars, but considering what could have been culled from the 10 albums and other sources, I was somewhat disappointed. I won't bore you with my specific quibbles. But (for example), just one song from "Life's too short?!" If a picture is worth a thousand words, I would say that a song list is also. Herewith, my "Best of:" there she goes again; rockin' around in nyc; not for me; whenever you're on my mind; try; one day with you; little wild one (no.5); yvonne; like a vague memory; this street; they will never know; she hates to go home; on the run; better back off; don't disappear now; fantastic planet of love; walkin' around; somewhere down the line; you're my favorite waste of time; what do you dream of?; theme from "flaregun;" crying, waiting, hoping (fr La Bamba). Burn this list (on your CD-R, that is...)! He is a superb guitarist, by the way... Dick in New Hampshire

It's tough NOT to love Marshall Crenshaw's music. And this CD really is a 'Best Of' collection in every sense. They've chosen the best songs from just about every one of his albums, and in chronological order to boot! Now, every fan of his already has all this stuff, but it saves us all the time and energy of making a great 'mix tape.' It's all here, from the pop sweetness and sleighbells of "Someday, Someway", to the country twang of "I'm Sorry (but so is Brenda Lee)", to the harder, louder, but no less sing-along-able "Whenever You're On My Mind." This collection does a good job of showcasing Marshall Crenshaw's ability to craft a pop song, from jangly guitar to fantastic melody to intelligent lyrics. And he's always had great producers working with him. This is one fine 'Best Of' collection for a severly underrated artist.

Greatly Underated Singer-Songwriter

In the 1980's I had Marshall Crenshaw's first 2 albums, and loved them. 1980's sound quality and production (especially the Field Day album) but lots of 50's and 60's in the songwriting. Plus he really does sound John Lennon-ish and Buddy Holly-ish at times. For those who don't know, Crenshaw played John Lennon in Beatlemania and later played Buddy Holly in the film La Bamba. He also later co-wrote "Till I Hear It From You", a hit song for the Gin Blossoms (which really sounds like a typical Crenshaw song... he should record it!). A few of his songs were also covered by others as well, especially "You're My Favourite Waste of Time".

This CD is full, 21 catchy songs from his career to date. The most radio played songs are here, some cool demos as well. It's really terrible that this guy was not far more famous and successful than he was. I guess that in the early 1980's when he came out, he was too "normal", at a time when video and new wave, etc. were the rage. Oddly enough, while lots of other 1980's music seems dated and doesn't really cut it anymore, Crenshaw's music is as fresh as ever!

If you like this CD, I highly recommend you also buy the remastered version of his debut album, which has lots of bonus tracks. It's gotta be one of the best debut albums ever by anybody. His songs are radio friendly and you can't get them out of your mind after only a couple listens. Both these CD's came out about the same time... maybe if these do well, they'll re-release Field Day and other albums as well.

Aperçu son nom dans un Rock et Folk il y a vraiment beaucoup de temps, ce CD emprunté à la discothèque municipale et il y a peu l'évocation dans une rubrique Télérama de Roy Orbison ( car proche musicalement ) me raviva la mémoire et enclencha cet achat, ce Best of.
Quoiqu'acclamé dés son premier disque, la suite de sa carrière ne bénéficia d'autant de soutien.
Pourtant cette compilation qui survole une bonne partie de sa discographie de 1981 à 1996 démontre un créateur tout à fait original et talentueux ayant su puisé essentiellement à la source du Rock an roll à laquelle s'ajoute tout naturellement une qualité mélodique pop.
Certes les orchestrations ne sont pas très variées, le style de référence étant conservé avec quelques variantes.
Tout de même à reprocher quelque fois un son notamment au niveau batterie un peu trop lourd bien à la manière des années 80, la clarté des années 50 voire 60 aurait été plus appropriée.
Hélas donc une reconnaissance insuffisante pour un artiste ( compositions, voix, guitares quelques fois plus ) tout à fait talentueux.
