Composer of one of the greatest of all musicals (West Side Story), dynamic conductor of the New York Philharmonic, prolific recording artist, pioneering Mahler interpreter, superb pianist and sensitive song accompanist, teacher, writer, broadcaster, and lecturer: there were few musical avenues that Bernstein did not explore. As great a conductor as he was a composer, Bernstein was a titan in an age of musical giants. His interpretive style was deeply personal—even if he was not the composer, he conducted as if he'd written the music himself—but his musicianship was quite simply immeasurable.
