I studied Beowulf when I was at school and it has always been one of my favourites. I was looking forward to seeing this film adaptation, and deliberately didn't look up any details of it beforehand...and I have to say I'm disappointed. The film takes a rather liberal approach when it comes to sticking to the original story. One of the main things I was looking forward to was seeing how the monster Grendel would he depicted, and unfortunately he's just a big burley bloke. How boring! I know the prestige community likes to dunk on him, but Gerard Butler really is one of our most verstile actors. I mean we all knew he could play Greek. We all knew he could play Egyptian.
But Scandanavian?? And apparently before this he played Atila the Hun?
Name me another Scotsman who can do Hunnic!
Beowulf & Grendel feels like it was one of the many hastily greenlit fantasy movies that came in the wake of Jackson's LOTR. What a strange movie. Some parts and aspects are very well done and treated seriously, while others feel goofy and baffling.
This script needed some serious focus, and the film itself needed to pick a tone and stick with it.
The good parts are quite good, though. It's very weird... It feels like the worst good movie I've ever seen.
Stellan Skarsgård has killed a troll who happens to be Grendel's father. Stellan let's the baby Grendel live and regrets it years later when Grendel is on a revenge mission.
Gerard Butler, Beowulf, is called to assist with his fighters. Tony Curran, a sword fighting regular is one of his main men.
Local witch, Sarah Polley, is the only one in this place with any common sense.
The landscapes are gorgeous. A touch too much chatter dragged this flick down and the mix of accents made this difficult for me to pick up on some of the dialog, but it is an enjoyable movie. One of the better Beowulf flicks.
The opening has the best scene of warriors in armor.
This movie is one of the many hidden gems of cinema. From the places it's set to the very well asteblished drama, this movie has everything. Unlike most "hero hunts down monster to save the city" movies it has soul and you can easily emphatise with both the hero and the monster. It's a shame that it's so low-rated. It's a great-shot, slow-paced movie that people should mention more in my opinion.
Only missing a five star rating due to a *sort of* rape scene, 2005’s ‘Beowulf and Grendel’ is an amazing movie. Filmed, at great cost, on the spots where the epic poem is said to have happened, the movie is a thing to behold. I don’t think I’d ever sat through the entire thing until tonight, as I remembered none of the ending. If you’d asked me before I watched the movie tonight, I would have sworn there was no scene with Grendel’s mother, and I’ve owned the movie on disc for years. No aspect of the film is bad, and Sarah Polley is particularly lovely as the witch Selma. I wish Gerard Butler had found his niche in this style of movie rather than the ‘Has Fallen’ series.
Both better and worse than I was expecting. Beowulf and Grendel is not the action movie with a public domain lit wrapping that I have always assumed it was. This has ambitions of being an actual movie and a fairly close adaptation of the source material.
The ambitions are welcome and some things here work well. The locations are all beautiful, the action sequences solid enough, and Butler makes for a decent lead. The choice to make Grendel more of a Sasquatch/neanderthal than a huge demonic troll works.
The decision to shoot in Iceland offered some great backdrops but the costs of shooting there clearly put a strain on the budget. Things start looking like cheap television which doesn't exactly…
contrary to anything my supposed best friend says, this is a bad movie. i honestly believed it was from 1979 and was confused to see gerard butler in this. this came out ONE YEAR before 300???????
literally how. i can’t really articulate why this was bad, but please know that my inability to do so does not detract from the indisputable fact that this is —— a BAD bad B.A.D —— movie.
the singular only solitary teeny star is SOLELY for gerard butler being allowed to be chunky. at one point i said i wish he’d take off his little leather vest so we could see his little belly pudge and vi died on the spot. that’s the only reason a star is deserved here.

Had it on purely as background “noise” and to try and remember if it was worth an honest rewatch or not. More than anything it makes me want to see the documentary that was made about its production because despite being lackluster in most regards, it’s still not a bad telling of the story. It might have been pretty good if it had the budget it needed because the cast and crew are bringing their best - but the lens and lighting they’re using aren’t doing anyone any favors. This really deserved better, and I really want to know the story BTS. Gotta get my hands on Wrath of the Gods.
Attractive Icelandic locations and Sarah Polley showing how she can turn any old nonsense into a good performance. But this is way too wiggy. Even the young boy has a fake beard! Gerard Butler gets a bit lost on his clunky costume.
