I came for the Rated R Superstar, but unfortunately, he didn't do anything cool. This isn't the Edge that I grew up being a huge fan of. Bending The Rules would have been a lot better If some suplexes and spears were thrown into the equation.
The thing I noticed with these WWE films, is that based on what I have seen in this one and 12 Rounds 2 so far, in my consumption of these flicks, the idea or premise sounds somewhat interesting on paper, but with the movies themselves, they turn out to be such vapid affairs. They have a whiff of b-movie, straight-to-DVD- going for them: low production values, Z-movie support cast, thus taking an already established and familiar premise or formula that was very much old news back in the 1980s and 1990s and try to inject some newfound energy into it for the current era - yet these movies tend to exist to further boost the star/wrestler's appeal, brand & in widening…
Imagine Beverly Hills Cop but a retired wrestler, Edge, instead of Eddie Murphy and Jamie Kennedy instead of the 2 cops hanging out with Murphy. If you can imagine that you already know what to expect for Bending the Rules. It is a paint by number action comedy that tries at moments but then drops the ball way too often. It is an excellent easy watch even if it is predictable. I was just hoping to see a banana in a tailpipe and that never happened.
I like Adam Copeland aka Edge. He was my favourite wrestler back when I watched wrestling. The man has charisma. He has it in this movie too. Unfortunately the movie is really bland. Not awful, just bland. They even have a decent cast surrounding him, and Jamie Kennedy. Not a single funny or exciting or surprising thing happens. But i like Adam Copeland. So i guess he's enough. Well...Alicia Witt and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Jennifer Esposito get totally wasted, but they're also here. That's something.
I'm really tired tonight, so it was the perfect exhaustion movie, not a lot of thinking involved.
ADA Theo Gold (Jamie Kennedy) is having a terrible birthday. His wife just left him, he's been passed over for the big promotion, the classic car onto which he projects familial love has been stolen and the cop he's got on trial for corruption, Detective Nick Blades (Adam Copeland), is working as a private investigator for Gold's mother (Jessica Walter). But Blades, while on administrative leave, is also pursuing an informant called Gil (Kevin Weisman) who vanished after leaving behind a coded newspaper. Will these two total opposites be able to put their respective animosities aside and unravel the mysteries before them?
I saw the poster for Bending the Rules and thought, "This looks horrible. Could be fun." It's...not exactly…
So Edge teams up with Jamie Kennedy to solve a stolen car ring that is actually about murdering folk and then I stopped caring or listening.
Edge gets some decent witty lines here and there but Kennedy does nothing of interest, wasn't he supposed to be a decent funny man?
There's a twist near the end that you really should see coming too.
I'm not a hater of WWE films, I even kinda liked the one where HHH makes pickles, but this is one that doesn't help their shite reputation as movie makers at all!
I kinda felt a WWE Films project coming on so tested the water with Edge vehicle "Bending the Rules". It's not very good. The only reason for watching is seeing laid back Canadian Adam Copeland look almost completely at home as an action hero. I'm amazed that WWE Films haven't used him more often. He's not the sole star either with Lucille from Arrested Development excellent in support. The script really needed a polish but the film was slightly better than expected. Looks like I might have a project.

A film especially written for and about Adam Copeland, former WWE Wrestler Edge. I love that guy so I thought (and hoped) I would like this film too. Copeland is actually a very solid actor and his character was great. He basically played the same character he played when he was Edge, which I loved. A very funny persona.
The rest of the film though is pretty meh. The plot itself wasn't very thrilling and although I don't hate Jamie Kennedy I didn't think he was all that entertaining throughout this film.
I can't really recommend this film unless you miss Edge in wrestling as much as I do.
I haven't been a big wrestling fan since I was much younger, but when I was a fan I loved Edge. He was one of my favorites. As an actor, he's not so bad. He kinda makes the film watchable thanks to some of his witty lines. Without him, it's just another lame buddy cop flick with a wasted Lucille Bluth and a slowly devolving Jamie Kennedy.
Was rightly finally, really starting to get tired during this 8th and last of a day spent viewing stuff featuring Philip Baker Hall. So, whenever the plot would rear its ugly head, I was beginning to check out.
Luckily there's such things as a wrestler more laidback and charming than The Rock ever was teaming up with Jamie Kennedy. Even better, it also has Lucille Bluth. And do you know who her husband is? Why only the man of the hour. That's who. For that, and that alone I would have let this slide cause they are genuinely entertaining (Jessica Walter in particular.) But, this silly piece of ridiculousness is holding up in memory. Enough to wanna own it.
Finish your ending though. LOL of a score too.
The plot of Bending The Rules is so aggressively convoluted that I was confused as to what was going on for about half the runtime. Including everything from corruption, to carjacking, to prison gangs is just too much for a movie under 90 minutes. Most of the supporting cast is quite bland with the exception of Jessica Walter, I wish she had been in this more. Jamie Kennedy is fine enough but he isn't given a lot to do, and he should have done more since he's one of the buddies in this buddy cop movie. I thought Edge was quite good and charismatic although I'm sure that largely has to do with the Hawaiian shirt thing he has going…
