Hull KR secure deal for Castleford Tigers scrum-half Danny Richardson

Hull KR have signed Danny Richardson

Hull KR have confirmed the signing of Castleford Tigers scrum-half Danny Richardson on a season-long loan deal.

He arrives following the departure of Ben Reynolds, who has joined city rivals Hull FC on loan until the end of the 2024 campaign.

Richardson has played four times for Castleford this season after missing the entire 2023 season through injury.

Since joining the Tigers in 2020, Richardson has made 50 appearances, arriving after three seasons at St Helens.

In his time with the Red Vee, he played 59 games and was part of the squad that won the 2019 Super League title.

A statement on the Hull KR website, announcing the arrival of Richardson, reads: “Hull KR can confirm that Danny Richardson has joined the club on a season-long loan from Castleford Tigers with immediate effect while Ben Reynolds will head on loan to Hull FC for the remainder of the 2024 Betfred Super League season.

“The Widnes native will add quality depth to the Robins’ halves and bring strong competition to Tyrone May and Mikey Lewis.”

Richardson to thrive at Hull KR?

There is no doubt it has been a tough few seasons for Richardson. After becoming Castleford’s main man following his arrival from Saints, injuries have quickly derailed his career.

After 18 months on the sidelines with a torn ACL and MCL, the 27-year-old has shown glimpses of what he’s capable of again this season for the Tigers.

His undoubted talent was on show during his time at Saints, where for a season he became one of the club’s key players as they became Super League’s dominant side under Justin Holbrook.

Now under another talented Australian coach in Willie Peters, Hull KR will be hoping to get the best out of Richardson again who at 27, should be in the prime of his career.

After such a long layoff, there is no question it is going to take the scrum-half time to get back to full fitness and show that sharp edge he presented prior to his injury.

He joins a club on the up, with KR fancied to challenge the likes of Wigan Warriors and St Helens for silverware this season, having beaten both teams convincingly in consecutive weeks.

In Mikey Lewis and Tyrone May, Rovers already have strong options in the halves, but Richardson has the talent to find a way into the team. If nothing else he adds superb strength in depth and is, on paper anyway, a superb signing.
