Prior to this it was Superman that had the iconic Superhero Theme. "Batman" introduced yet another musical hook that stood up to [John] Williams' Man of Steel score. Over 20 years later its the score that set the tone for Batman. Following the film a few years later Danny Elfman was asked to do the song intro for "Batman: The Animated Series" which echoed the film's main score. It is this film's score that "Lego: Batman" saw fit to use as their backdrop for game-play music. The likes of [Hans] Zimmer's score for the Nolan films, the games and animated movies that followed would not have the same sound had this score not been done in the way that Elfman did it.
Because Prince was also contracted to do a soundtrack that went along with the film I imagine it was written somewhere that Prince's album would get the same cover as the VHS. At first I thought, "bummer," but then I took a look at the Score's CD cover. The iconic shot from the movie where the Batplane rises above the clouds to cast its silhouette against the moon is quite fitting for reflecting the tone of the movie and score.
Each track is filled with mood that reflects the iconic imagery of the film. If you're a fan of the film and have seen it more times than you can count you'll hear tracks that are more than familiar to you but take the time to really listen to each one and admire it's compositional structure.
While the inside sleeve doesn't have as big a fold out with as many pictures as the Prince album you do get a couple good shots, one being a closeup of Batman's face as he's driving the Batmobile, a shot exclusive to this album.
A great quintessential addition for one who collects film scores and a must-own for Batfans everywhere.
What Danny Elfman did in creating this production as a relative novice composer at the time (now a very seasoned veteran) is something that I don't believe will ever quite be matched. Elfman composed such powerful, iconic, and moving pieces within this track; there are 21 total individual pieces, and while you may primarily be familiar with the "Batman Theme", I argue that various tracks within the production surpass that very theme in intensity and grandeur.
My top 10 tracks are (in order): 10, 15, 3, 16, 17, 7, 20, 1, 13, and 21. These encompass many of the more intense pieces. All of those are amazing, and yet the rest of the tracks are each incredible in their own right, and offer crucial interpretations that accompany the storytelling of "Batman" director Tim Burton. Elfman perfectly pares to Burton's style for this 1989 blockbuster film; this dark and brooding, and ultimately triumphant score is something that can easily be listened to in succession and will likely inspire your viewing (or revisiting) the film as well.
Any serious fan of classical music should absolutely have this in their collection. In many ways it is so different from other film scores and traditional classical pieces, yet it is something that has to be experienced and adds to the rich library of compositions that came before and have since been composed.
My favorite would have to be all of it, but track no. 17 would have to be my pick where the Joker and Vicky Vale going up Gotham City Cathedral and definately The Waltz (track no.18). I loved the Smiley tune that was not on the CD but in the movie where the Joker interrupts the news footage advertising his new Joker brand. That's tune's really fun to listen to. If you loved the movie, then this would be an ideal CD for you. Don't be dissapointed though that some music from the movie is not on the CD because it is still good to listen to.
