Based on an Untrue Story is the best conception of TV dramas and Lifetime schmaltzy since that time you killed your mother and borne your lost, unknown half-brother who turned out to be your sister. Morgan Fairchild channeling that fondue cheese to Razzi heights of hysteria and dumb blonde logic including a monumental theme song, "girl is clueless, if that girl ever had a clue it was gone..." truly loved this silly spoof of tawdry television movies, just tons of gags and ridiculous line readings that had me cracking up from start to end. loses points for having an unfortunate twist to the main plot but it's a bit less terribly handled than other movies of the 90s - a low bar to clear, I admit. this is packed to the gills with great comedic performances from Morgan Fairchild, Ricki Lake, Dan Hedaya and more.

Morgan Fairchild plays with her image in this hilarious spoof of soapy TV thrillers. One of those movies where it's just one comedic banger after another, satirizing literally every genre trope at once. Favorite gag was sultry saxophone playing at inappropriate moments. And I loved Dan Hedaya as the "dysfunctional, addictive, self-destructive, codependent" detective. Required viewing for those of us who grew up watching movies about evil twins switched-at-birth and sex-change fathers having affairs with gaslighting husbands.
Really odd little comedy with plenty of Naked Gun type jokes, its a gag a minute so obviously plenty of the jokes do not work. Its not terrible and its worth watching if you enjoy obscure 90s comedies like I do.

Warning: In predictable fashion there is a trans twist in it *eyeroll* but its not done in a trans panic way. Its actually surprisingly accepting for when it came out, but then it nosedives back into some awkwardness.
If you like soap operas, daytime tv true crime, and lots of puns and overacting then this is the one for you!
A fitfully funny absurdist comedy in the Abrahams-Zucker vein that tackles every trope ever in TV movies: disease-of-the-week, serial killers, social issues, true-crime, etc., etc. Morgan Fairchild plays a clueless executive in a perfume company who loses her sense of smell to a possibly-fatal disease, just as she introduces her new fragrance, so she goes searching for her previously-unknown triplet sisters for an olfactory transplant. Along the way, she meets every kooky character possible. The film starts out amazingly, with a laugh every other second, but it loses serious steam by the end, with endlessly-repeated gags beginning to wear thin. It has a game cast, but also some unfortunate casting choices including Ricki Lake, who sucks, as usual. There's certainly enough amusement here for the right audience, so TV fanatics are encouraged to check it out.

Funny spoof of TV movies of the week, it’s a gag-o-thon and most of the gags work. It’s just a little to caricaturally acted for my taste but I laughed anyway!
