Barnstable High School Reviews
Rating 3.92 out of 5 191 reviews
Barnstable high school offers a great variety of extracurricular activities as well as athletic opportunities. There are quite a few Advanced Placement classes and some niche classes that many schools do not offer such as forensics, astronomy, and horror and sci-fi. However many of the teachers are overworked, underpaid, and burnt out, so the quality of education is severely lacking. This is not fully their fault as the district is unsupportive and consistently fails to uphold the values they claim to have. Violence, substance use, and poor behavior run rampant and are not appropriately dealt with by administration, negatively impacting teachers and students.
Growing up in Cape Cod there weren't many people like me outside of my family. In elementary school not only did I find myself being the only Black student in my classes, but it became my peer's realization that I was the only gay student in class. Through the course of my life, I have learned to use my voice, and the things that make me different from males change for those like me. In my Junior year of high school my teacher, Krissie Williams helped me find my voice again and together we formed the club Stand Up Stand Out. Through my club, I have been able to embrace the differences of all, while addressing individual issues. Having to deal with the rumors and ridicule of classmates can be extremely harmful to one's mental health, but also negatively affects the learning experience. So, having been on the receiving side of that ridicule, I will always advocate for the quote "...any person...any study. I hope in the future students use their voices more for change with staff help.
Overall, this high school is generally okay. I haven’t had to deal with any particularly hard circumstances where I needed support from the school, but I know for some individuals who have the support is lacking sometimes.
