NIGHT’S DISCUSSIONS. WE’RE GOING TO LET YOU KNOW WHAT WE FIND OUT. THE BARNEY ALLIS PLAZA IS PARKING GARAGE IS GOING TO CLOSE TODAY AS THE CITY PREPARES TO TEAR IT DOWN NEXT MONTH. KMBC NINE’S MORGAN MOSLEY JOINS US LIVE THIS MORNING AND MORGAN, THE DEMOLITION IS COMING UP IN JUST A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND WE’LL GET TO MORGAN IN JUST A BIT. BUT ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1954, THE GARAGE HAS REACHED ITS END OF LIFE IN JUST A FEW WEEKS IT WILL BE COMPLETELY DEMOLISHED. SO THE TOPIC OF WHAT TO DO WITH THE PARKING GARAGE HAS BEEN A DEBATE FOR YEARS. THE PLAZA AND UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGE HAS BEEN IN DISREPAIR FOR A LONG TIME. THE LOWER LEVELS WERE CLOSED DUE TO CRUMBLING CONCRETE AND THE PARK ON TOP IS RARELY USED, SO IT’S ESTIMATED THAT THE REPAIRS TO THE GARAGE AS IT STANDS WOULD TAKE AROUND $30 MILLION AND ONLY EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE GARAGE FOR TEN MORE YEARS. SO INSTEAD, THERE WILL BE A NEW GARAGE IN PLACE BY 2026, IN TIME FOR THE WORLD CUP. THE PROPOSED GARAGE WOULD BE 583 SPACES, SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN THE 975 AT ONCE HELD. IT DOES HAVE SOME WORRIED, BUT COUNCIL MEMBERS ARE SOME OF THOSE THAT ARE WORRIED. BUT THE TEAM IN CHARGE OF THE DESIGN AND BUILD SAY THAT ADDING MORE WOULD BE EXPENSIVE. AND THOSE NEARLY 600 PLANNED SPACES ARE THE RIGHT FIT. SO AGAIN, THIS IS GOING TO BE A 24 MONTH CONSTRUCTION PERIOD SET TO BE COMPLETED BY 2026, JUS
