Starring Anthony Quinn in the title role, Barabbas was released in 1961 in the midst of a wave of widescreen epics based on biblical characters. The screenplay, by playwright Christopher Fry (who also contributed to Ben-Hur), is an unusually intelligent one. Jack Palance's sadistic laugh almost steals the show

Ridley Scott commented that he was inspired to create the movie Gladiator because of a Victorian painting showing Romans pointing their thumbs down in the arena signaling death for a beaten gladiator. Nearly forty years earlier, Dino De Laurentiis's company recreated the Roman world and his production designers didn't have any CGI and knew the trope about the thumbs down. The inspiration for the film came from a fictional novel by Swedish author, Par Lagerkvist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, not too shabby. The gladiator games are filmed in one of the largest and best preserved Roman amphitheaters in Verona, Italy, and the Cinecitta studios in Rome. Although, I suspect that the amphitheater was dressed for the film. The brutality and sadism of the crowds are disturbing and are reflected on the face of Anthony Quinn. Richard Fleischer, the director, waited until he could use a real eclipse at the crucifixion of Christ to recreate the darkness that infused the world with his death. Now that is a special effect!!! The scene where Jesus is on the portico and the sunlight obscures his face could be a painting; or does the light come from Jesus? He is wearing the crown of thorns and his head is down in resignation of his fate. The sulfur mines were filmed at an actual sulfur mine near the foot of Mt. Etna. Those scenes also show the brutality of life in ancient Rome, for the slaves and those who debase their souls by using them. Those scenes are worth the price of admission in themselves. The cave-in was all done with practical special effects, no CGI. Jack Palance is menacing and is the embodiment of Roman sadism. Anthony Quinn is remarkable in this film. Going from a bawdy, violent, womanizer to a man torn by his beliefs, questioning everything he has seen and known. After seeing this, I cannot imagine any other actor inhabiting the role. Absolutely spectacular and the film holds up well for being over 60 years old. My only complaint is that the three crosses at Golgotha would not have been seen from Pilate's court or the Temple precinct, it is outside the walls of Jerusalem and on a lower hill. But the scenes of ancient Rome, all created by Cinecitta Italian craftsmen are remarkable. No studio could afford to build those nowadays.

I've often wished for a widescreen edition of Barabbas and now here it is. I became excited several months ago when I saw this edition was to be relased on DVD. So here I am on March 5th ordering my copy. I own the VHS version which distracts from the excellent photogarphy. There are some important things to know about the production of this film: the crucifixion sequece was filmed during an actual eclipse, a one shot scene. The sets were constructed three dimnesional so the streets of Jerusalem and Rome appear real. Anthony Quinn was a perfect choice for Barabbas. If you've read the book this film will provide a quality visual to the fine, simple telling of a man's life, the man who was spared crucifixion and free'd instead of our Lord. Also if you've read the book you'll know what Barabbas is thinking most of the time. Quinn is excellent, his eyes ever roaming in thought of survival. This is a big movie shot in a down to earth realistic way. A fine study in seeking truth, arriving on it's doorstep only to turn away. Because of the book, when Baabbas is helping set fire to Rome, I am aware of how truly emotional this last scene in the film is. (I hope am not giving anything way in the film). Barabbas finally makes an open commitment, acting out on a belief system that he's denied since Christ's crucifixion, only to discover in the end it was Nero who set fire to Rome and not the Christians. It's really all there. The muscal score is unsual and unique. I have the old mono 33 1/2 rpm version which gives musical examples at the end of how Mario Nascimbene wrote and orchastrated the incedibe score. Sadly enough this old recording is far supeior to the new CD issue which edited cuts and left out the 5 minute + prologue. I rate this movie 5 stars. If you like the old spectaculars this one is unique and should be in your library.

This film is about Barabbus and how his life is affected following his being let off execution by Pilate instead of Christ who is sent to be crucified. It shows this through the eyes of an unbeliever and is therefore brings much more nuance than we see in most films depicting it. The crucifixion scene is deeply moving, starting 14 minutes in and seen through these uninvolved characters from far off it nonetheless it surprises them and starts the character on a whole different and unexpected path.
They just don't make films like this anymore but at least we have these ones to treasure

This is a very impressive film from the 1960s based on a novel of the same name by Par Lagerkvist. The film alters plot details but the atmosphere of the original book is wonderfully preserved. And the theme of Lagerkvist's novel - the reformation and salvation of an evil human being - comes through brilliantly. Anthony Quinn effortlessly embodies the title character; you will never doubt this is truly a man whose only purpose in life is suvival, and surviving in this violent world takes all of his considerable strength and intelligence. There are no nuances in this man's life and no dimensions to his personality; all of his energy, frequently expressed as hate, goes into his daily struggle. But having been unwittingly drawn into Jesus's presence and later into the Christians' circle,
Barabbas tries mightily to maintain his independence and solitude. I am reminded of the famous poem, THE HOUND OF HEAVEN by Francis Thompson. As in that poem, a human being is being pursued by God's redemptive love. Will he surrender to that love or reject it? The answer to this question is not given until the final frame of the film, and the moment adds a final triumph to Anthony Quinn's remarkable performance in this remarkable film.

1948 erhielt der Filmregisseur Richard Fleischer für seinen Dokumentarfilm "Design for Death" einen Oscar. Einen weiteren Riesenerfolg hatte er 1954 mit der Disney Produktion "20.000 Meilen unter dem Meer". Es folgten "Die Wikinger" und "Der Zwang zum Bösen". Danach inszenierte er für den Produzenten Dino de Laurentiis den Bibelfilm "Barabbas". Der Film war als großes römisches Epos konzipiert und basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman des Nobelpreisträgers Pär Lagerkvist aus dem Jahr 1950. Gedreht wurde in Rom und Verona. "Barabbas" enthält einige spektakuläre Szenen, darunter eine Schlacht der Gladiatoren und eine Kreuzigung, die während einer tatsächlichen totalen Sonnenfinsternis gedreht wurde.

Als Barabbas ist Anthony Quinn zu sehen. Wie die Bibel berichtet, bietet der Stadthalter Pontius Pilatus (Arthur Kennedy) dem Volk zum Passahbrauch an, einen der Gefangenen freizulassen. Das Volk kanns ich zwischen Jesus von Nazareth und die Aufwiegler Barabbas entscheiden und die versammelte Menge schenkt Barabbas die Freiheit. Jesus wird gekreuzigt. Barabbas kehrt zu seinen Freunden zurück und fragt auch gleich nach seiner Geliebten Rachel (Silvana Mangano). Von ihnen erfährt er jedoch von der Wandlung seiner Freundin zur Christin. Rachel kehrt zurück, ist jedoch nicht erfreut Barabbas zu sehen, weil der Sohn Gottes für ihn gekreuzigt wurde. Am dritten Morgen findet Barabbas das Grab geöffnet und der Leichnam ist verschwunden. Rachel erzählt, dass Jesus auferstanden ist. Aber er glaubt ihr nicht. Auch die Apostel reden von dieser Auferstehung des Toten. Doch Barabbas kehrt mit einem gewissen Schuldbewusstsein dennoch zu seiner kriminellen Lebensart zurück. Bei Versuch eine Karawane auszurauben, wird er jedoch wieder gefangen genommen und wird zu 20 Jahren Zwangsarbeit in den Schwefelminen von Sizilien verurteilt. Er überlebt auch diese Prüfung und in Rom zu einem Gladiator ausgebildet...

Dort trifft er im Kampf auf den brutalen und unerbittlichen Obergladiator Torvald, gespielt von Jack Palance. Das Duell der beiden Männer ist packend inszeniert und eine der besten Szenen des Films, der in den USA ca. 3 Millionen Dollar einspielen konnte und auch in Europa ein Kinoerfolg wurde. In weiteren Rollen sind Katy Jurado, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Andrews, Vittorio Gassmann und Valentina Cortese zu sehen. Bei der Kritik kam der Monumentalfilm weniger gut an. Kameramann war Aldo Tonti (Obsessione, Die Nächte der Cabiria, Kali Yug, Ashanti).

Richard Fleischer démontre encore une fois son talent dans le filmage avec le format large. Le cinémascope est un format dont il sait tirer une construction de plans qui met en avant tout à la fois les décors sur différents plans, mais aussi les personnages. Et pas uniquement en plans d'ensemble: il suffit d'analyser toutes les séquences dans les sous-sols de la mine de soufre.

Au-delà de la forme, ce péplum sur Jesus Christ est passionnant. Car son personnage principal, Barabbas, est une victime, qui ne contrôle rien de sa vie. Le film commence par sa rencontre avec Jesus Christ. La population décide de l'épargner et de crucifier Jesus Christ, ce qui le poursuivra toute sa vie: prisonnier pour brigandage, puis libre Grâce au peuple (qui préfère exécuter Jesus Christ que lui même donc), puis il est emprisonné à nouveau, puis il devient gladiateur. Le film débute par la crucifixion de Jesus Christ et suit en parallèle de l'histoire de Barabbas et la montée de la secte des croyants en Jesus Christ.

La partie du film où Barabbas est gladiateur permet de suivre les entraînements des combattants, les répétitions des affrontements puis les affrontements eux-mêmes, et d'évoquer le fonctionnement et le rôle des gladiateurs à Rome. Avec en prime Jack Palance qui campe un gladiateur halluciné, combattant professionnel, qui ne semble plus esclave, et qui adore cela: il tue par plaisir. Concernant l'interprétation, Anthony Quinn est parfait et interprète un incroyant dubitatif, simple et primaire sans être stupide, qui subit et ne comprend pas ce qui lui arrive, mais qui sait être résilient (peut-être avec l'aide de Dieu...).

Le film est intéressant pour les us et coutumes de l'époque: le statut des prisonniers, des esclaves, les Romains. D'ailleurs le film ne montre pas forcément les Romains comme des méchants, nous ne dirons pas comme bienveillants, mais plutôt comme des concernés.

Accoler à ce grand film réalisé par Richard FLEISCHER le vocable de péplum serait lui faire injure. Scénarisé par le dramaturge britannique Christopher FRY d'après le roman éponyme âpre et très sombre du Suédois Pär LAGERKVIST, BARABBAS est un superbe drame historique aux accents shakespeariens.
Ce film est à des années lumière des superproductions hollywoodiennes factices et ennuyeuses telles que Ben-Hur (version Charlton Heston, très en deçà de la version muette avec Ramon Novarro) ou Les Dix Commandements.
Anthony QUINN, absolument fabuleux, campe avec beaucoup de retenue et d'efficacité cet homme "brut de décoffrage", extrêmement solitaire qui durant 20 ans va se demander pourquoi le Christ l'a condamné à vivre. Il apprendra peu à peu grâce à de terribles épreuves que le chemin de la croyance est semé d'embûches.
Certaines scènes telles que la crucifixion réalisée dans les environs de Sienne au moment même où survenait réellement une éclipse de soleil, les mines de souffre, véritable enfer sur terre, filmées sur les pentes de l'Etna en Sicile (Barabbas se retrouve enchaîné à un compagnon d'infortune chrétien fort bien joué par Vittorio GASSMAN, lequel ne fût jamais aussi sympathique, fragile et nuancé) ou les jeux du cirque au cours desquels Barabbas est confronté au chef des gladiateurs psychopathe et sanguinaire superbement interprété par un Jack PALANCE et la scène finale sont de véritables morceaux de bravoure.
Richard FLEISCHER sait admirablement utiliser le cinémascope pour rendre spectaculaires mêmes les scènes les plus intimes et la photo d'Aldo TONTI parée de toute la gamme des couleurs est un modèle du genre.
Un très grand film superbement restauré tant au niveau de l'image que du son. A découvrir ou à redécouvrir de toute urgence.
