An example of how a film with a decent amount of potential can be completely squandered with little care for writing and editing. There's a very small amount of things I liked about Bangkok Dangerous. The lead, as in the actor himself, is alright. Some of the action/blood effects are decent as well. It's weird to think that there was a time when Bangkok Dangerous was kind of a big deal. It turned the directors, the Pang brothers, into stars, gave a huge boost to the Thai film industry's worldwide visibility, and spawned a little liked remake starring Nic Cage.
Maybe the disappointment of that remake, or Oxide and Danny Pang's subsequent careers, has tarnished its rep. Or maybe it wasn't all that great to begin with? There's a surfeit of style here, with zooms, freeze frames, slo-mo and Dutch angles aplenty. What an absolute turd to end what has largely been a really enjoyable project.
While I found the Pang Brothers' The Eye films to be a mixed bag of some great stuff and some complete shit, this is just all complete shit. Overdosing on headache-inducing STYLE and thumping shite TECHNO, it's also got a completely incomprehensible script and story and I absolutely couldn't be arsed keeping up with it after about half an hour.
I know they remade this themselves in Hollywood a few years later and I can only assume that it's an improvement on this because it's hard to imagine they would make the same load of old bollocks all over again. Absolutely dreadful. I should have just worked instead.

You can definitely tell this is the Pang Bros. first film. It is shot and edited in what would be consider “amateur.”
It also must’ve been easy for the Pang Bros. to write since their main character didn’t have any lines. Smart idea making their lead a deaf mute. Although I think it would’ve been more creative for the dude to know some TSL. It’s not like he is recently deaf, it shows flashbacks of him being deaf since childhood. If not for the challenge I would not have finished this film. Crams every awful post-Tarantino, post-Natural Born Killers action movie reference and stylistic device into a narrative that at once glories in the ridiculous violence and action it can show you, then brings in typical Thai moralizing to try to chastise you for enjoying it. While not as good as I remembered its still the Pang bros finest hour for me. Pure, raw style. The kind of quick cutting and different film stock mesh the 90s got us so used to. The story is messy and yet has some solid dramatic moments due to the overall simplicity. Definitely zapped me back to high school and watching this for tips.
Reading the other reviews on letterboxd I’m shocked to see this just being torn apart. I get it, by todays standards it’s a little generic and even by the time this would have come out, it was kind of an imitation of that whole era of 90s crime films but this really helped put Thailand on the map for filmmaking and it’s easy to see why.
Sure the narrative is weak and it’s definitely style over substance, but I think it works for that era. I mean this essentially got them the gig editing infernal affairs! It’s obvious why this was a big deal at the time and really put the pang brothers on the map. Worth a watch.

It looks like shit, the plot is utter bobbins, and the acting is worse. Somehow the Nic Cage remake is supposed to be even worse than this, which almost seems impressive given how uninspired the original is.

If the remake with Nic Cage was at least lame, this thing here is a giant "wtf?!", similar to a 2 hours long videomix. It alternates hypnotizing moments with techno stuff as a soundtrack (good techno stuff, btw) and apparenty stop motion images (why?), with cheesy and sadness-generating terrible love songs. Blurred flashbacks, kind of stylish but terrible filmaking and a plot so out of tune with everything else to complete the overall picture. Anyway, still probably better than the 2008 remake, just because at least tries to be memorable.
