Santa was amazing and it’s the first time my 2 year old has went anywhere near santa, he took his time to speak to her. So impressed by her knowledge of the local area and genuine interest in the story of the Arthur family. And to top it all off a demonstration of baking traditional soda bread over a peat fire. We were told many interesting stories of the lives of those who had lived there , and visited God's Acre where family members from generations before had been buried. I definitely recommend a visit. We felt that Ballymena overall is 'on the up', especially compared with many mainland UK towns which are definitely not! Some nice, niche and upmarket brands coming in, mixed in with the expected Boots, discount and pop-up shops. Also Taboo Donuts which was fab and had a nice upmarket feel to it. The church , still with it's separate men's and woman'e entrances ( though not adhered to now ) and with the simplicity that many ornate cathedrals lack. Firstly the building is impressive, secondly staff very friendly, third there was lots on the history of Ballymena. - Barradale26 contributionsI came across The Ticket Bakehouse at the station while exploring Cullybackey and it was such a lovely surprise. Even though trade was brisk (which didn't surprise me at all) I couldn't have had a nicer and warmer welcome. The coffee was delicious and the freshly baked delights beyond description (I had a blueberry and lemon scone that melted in my mouth and was absolutely stunning - I'll never forget it). I was walking around the town, and the extraordinary stand of trees on their front lawn was impossible to ignore. The site was open, so I could walk around the church. I liked the details in the stonework. A plaque says its mid-nineteenth century, but it may have been changed after a fire. In spite of the bell tower being very tall, the trees now manage to look down on it. The gatehouse is very cute.
