Back To The Future II - did it bother anybody else that the Sports Almanac looked so thin?

Discussion

You would think for an almanac that listed every major sporting event result from 1950 to 2000, the book would be much, much thicker. Maybe the size of a White Pages phone book? (You young kids, ask your parents!) I'm guessing they made it magazine size, but with a book jacket, so that they could do the Oh La La magazine swap later in the movie!

Yes, it's thinner than a Wisden's Almanack, it's utterly insane that it's meant to contain 50 years of sports results for multiple sports.

Four points font, scores only.

Holy cow!!

'How's he gonna switch it for oh la la if it's the size of a phone book?' (Props department, probably)

well a farmer's almanac could fit a whole month on a single page, excel sheet format.

So maybe they condense every year down to a single page (maybe just listing the winners), hence a 25 page almanac?

How would 50's Biff be able to read it, though? He's an idiot as it is, but throw future shorthand in the mix and he wouldn't understand a thing.

Why don't you make like a tree and get outta here with your logic.

Yeah. I can imagine its like really fine print, but the thing looks to be about 100 pages max, maybe less. That is just two pages per year. How many sports with how many games are played each year? Baseball alone is 162 games per year! That'll take up at least one half of a page! Haha

u/SteffeEric avatar

That’s 162 games times 15 games per day which is 2430. Only 1800 characters even fit on one page typically.

Assuming each game takes 6 characters you are looking at over 8 pages per baseball season alone. 8x50 is 400 pages alone of just baseball.

This always bothered me a ton. Let alone I’m pretty sure it was a college football game on the radio. If you include college sports that book is thicker than Nicki Minaj.

Haha right? Unless like the book only covers "major" sporting events such as playoffs and final games??

u/SteffeEric avatar

That would be a loophole. Wouldn’t really add up with the timing of college football bowl games (I want to say they are in September when they travel back initially) There is no mention of the holiday season (that I recall) that would coincide with college football bowl games.

I guess that in the future, they’ve invented ultra-thin books. They can fit hundreds of pages into the size of one.

Its vintage though, probably published in the year 2000.

You're supposed to be in Switzerland, you little son of a bitch!

Funny... I'd never thought it would be you.

Major sporting events could be just championship games for each of the major sports (MLB, NHL, NBA, MLS, Boxing) along with noteworthy lesser games. Given the span is only 50 years and it's an almanac, I could see it being that thin as long as it's table layout with little to no typed information about each game aside from date/time/teams/score.

Yeah I'm starting to think its chanpionship games.

But he won his first million at a horse race.

Could have been like the Kentuky Derby

It’s set in the future so you can fit more data in a smaller space

u/WeDriftEternal avatar

No, its box scores or even less and there aren't that many major sports events each year. On two pages they can do a whole year of major sports events laid out - World Series, Super bowl, NBA, NHL, Kentucky Derby, World Cup, Wimbeldon, NCAA Football, NCAA Basketball, Masters, Tour de France)

THere's still probably room for more.

You can represent each of these in often 1 or 2 lines depending on how much detail.

To be fair competitive sitting and ultimate tag weren't really sports in 85' that and the fact that the cold War was active there was a lack of foreign sports that were covered by anyone other than sports illustrated. Oh and TO BE FAIR!!!!

Its from the future, each page can probably zoom or increase font size or whatever it needs to do.

I thought Grandpa Biff got the almanac from the antique store that had Jaws on NES and the old CRT monitor and all that jazz? Don't think it's a "future" almanac. Pretty sure it's vintage.

Edit: Yeah it's right here along with all the other old stuff

u/Greedy-Bad8781 avatar

The book was from 2000/2001.

which was the future compared to 1989

u/Greedy-Bad8781 avatar

not the far off future though.... the shop keeper even sells the book like its a vintage piece of history when books used to have dust jackets.

It's definitely thin, to have horse racing, college sports too plus major sports. Even if it was only major games and highlights, that thing shouldve been as thick as a highschool year book.

He should’ve just grabbed an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly so he knew which systems to get at launch for the next 30 years.

It might be they calculated how big it needed to be and the decided artistic licence was the way to go. A similar thing happened with the balloons in UP!

Or it could actually be a real almanac listing 1955 with the cover changed.

No

It's Future Ink

Bother me? In a movie about time travel... time travel in a flying car? You serious?

Well yeah... I mean out of all of the ideas in a movie about a time machine Delorean that could be critiqued, the thickness of the Almanac is one of the more minor things to be bothered by haha.
