The album opens with what has to be the greatest comeback song ever written, it is of course, ”As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Sunset Boulevard. Streisand used it almost 20 years ago to open her triumph New Years Eve concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1993/94. Here, the song gets retooled with new lyrics to commemorate Barbra’s return to her hometown. Funny, poignant and moving, the crowd roars its approval when she reaches that immortal line, “I’ve come home at last” – simply amazing!
“The Way He Makes Me Feel” from Yentl, is one of the songs that Barbra has never performed live in concert! Now that the film has celebrated its 30th anniversary, the song is all the more special. Barbra’s voice sparkles here and it’s amazing to me how wonderful she sounds.
“Didn’t We” is a song Barbra sang live in 1972 for the McGovern fundraiser and her earlier version can of course be found on Live Concert at the Forum. I loved this when I heard it at the concert, Barbra’s voice is strong and the reverb on the big chord near the end is fantastic! I saw video footage from Phildelphia (10/8/12) and she talks about that back in 2006, she and music director, William Ross, tried to do the song but it didn’t work. I’m glad Barbra decided to try it out again, it’s wonderful!
“The Way We Were/Through the Eyes of Love” needs no introduction, her tribute to her dear and late friend, Marvin Hamlisch is so emotional. Listen to it! If you don’t get even a little misty-eyed then you have no soul.
“Rose’s Turn/Some People/Don’t Rain on My Parade” - The Styne medley is a killer, and possibly the best track on the album. Seriously, I repeated it like four times. Her shout at the end, “You bet your ass, Papa” is the best – it’s a remarkable statement to Streisand’s naysayers who frequently shout that she’s too old (or she can’t sing anymore) to play the role of Mama Rose in Styne and Sondheim’s Gypsy. Although it’s a missed opportunity, she could have tackled “Rose’s Turn” and ended the concert’s first act with a big bang. Nevertheless, it’s a showstopper as only Barbra can deliver!
“You’re The Top” is definitely from the second night (10/13) as during Thursday night’s performance, the song seemed clunky and out of place. It’s been polished and rehearsed, again with special lyrics dedicated to all things Brooklyn. Barbra really seems to have fun with it, so does the audience.
“What’ll I Do/My Funny Valentine and Lost Inside of You”
Despite the fact that I am thankful Chris Botti’s solos were cut from the audio CD, his duets with Barbra are wonderful and his trumpet playing is a great compliment to her voice. I also love the arrangements of these pieces. The high note near the end of “Lost Inside of You” gets a great reaction from the audience.
“How Deep is the Ocean”
Jason Gould has a beautiful voice. Obviously, he has inherited his mother’s gift of singing. The mother and son duet is beautiful! Don’t take my word for it, give it a listen.
“People”
How many version of this song has she performed live?! Not that it matters, this one is just as beautiful as any of the others!
“Make Our Garden Grow”
This is the big finale and Barbra delivers her money-note at the end with great gusto! This is identical to the arrangement Rupert Holmes did in 1988 for the abandoned Back To Broadway sessions. It’s funny too, IL Volo also sings but their duet with Barbra on “Smile” isn’t included. The end of truncated as the tail end of “Somewhere” is left off, which was heard during the concert. I love this song from Candide, and I can only hope that the studio version of it recorded in 1988 will come out soon!
The Voice: I just read a recent review front the New York Daily News, in which Jim Farber writes, “…her lower notes have a phlegmier texture. When she wants to belt, she turns hoarse before chopping the note down to a length she can sustain. That means bravura numbers, like “Don’t Rain on My Parade” or a rare “Rose’s Turn” from “Gypsy,” have to borrow some of their drama from acting rather than vocal chops.” I will admit, Barbra’s voice has lowered since her last live concert tour in 2006. No, she doesn’t sound like she did 20 years, even 30 years ago – but who would expect her to? The woman is 71 years old. Yes Mr. Farber is entitled to his opinion; however, I think he’s being a bit unfair – obviously he forgets that the voice is also part of the body, it ages too. Barbra is well aware of her narrowing vocal range, but does that stop her?! No. The concert tour was still SOLD OUT. Age has unfortunately taken some of her higher register; however, her middle range is lush and intact. On such gems like, “The Way He Makes Me Feel” you can hardly tell that her voice has aged at all.
Verdict: Barbra is in fine form on the album, I am stunned that she is 71 years old.. truly! This definitely deserves repeated playing. The mastering is great, there’s a real improvement in this CD over the two disc 2006 outing. Too bad we don’t get any extras (read: bonus tracks) like “On A Clear Day” which was used as an opener later in the tour and there are other varied songs that Barbra performed elsewhere but not in Brooklyn.
I will never forget the opening where she sings the whole record of "You'll Never Know" with film clips of her childhood playing on big screens. As the song ended the camera panned across the bridge to Brooklyn and the "Funny Girl" overture began. On the screens was everything that was going on while she was on Broadway in "Funny Girl." The audience was going wild. When the overture ended Barbra came up from below the stage and got a 5 minute standing ovation. That night she opened the show with "Being Good isn't Good Enough." The audience went crazy. In Brooklyn she opened with, "As if We Never Said Goodbye,
with lyrics tailor made for Brooklyn. It was spectacular on the DVD and CD also in the Brooklyn concert she sang, "Being Good isn't Good Enough" later in the show.
This DVD/CD is a testament that talent stands the test of time. Barbra at 70 can still take you on a musical journey with each song. She bends notes, wraps notes, goes high and belts when needed. The tribute to the late Marvin Hamlisch is astounding and has Barbra singing the "Way We Were" in the film arrangement, which in my opinion was always the better one then she dedicates another classic to him that he wrote about their friendship, "Through the Eyes of Love." then she ends with the "Way we Were." All the while there are pictures and film on a screen of the two of them over the years...not a dry eye in the house.
Each song is a revelation from the Bergmans medley of That Face/Nice and Easy to the act I finale of a Jule Styne Medley that includes 2 masterpieces from "Gypsy" and "Funny Girl." She starts off with "Roses Turn" goes into "Some People" then right into "Don't Rain on My Parade. This was the Act I finale and the audience went wild. Some other gems in act I are: "Didn't WE,"
"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." Each song is done with perfect phrasing and in the moment Barbra is still the ultimate artist by far.
Act II begins with "Your the Top" which she sang over the credits in "What's up Doc" yet she changes all the lyrics to fit Brooklyn. Barbra sings this complicated song in a breezy manner and really has fun with it again the audience goes wild. Next she brings on Chris Botti who accompanies her on 3 songs one is a duet: "My Funny Valentine/What'll I Do, then they banter a bit and then he accompanies her on "Lost inside of you" this is amazing as Barbra goes up to her high soprano range and blows the audience away. The last song is, "Evergreen" she does it as beautiful as ever. Chris Botti's Trumpet playing just adds an extra layer of beauty to the already beautiful voice...he enhances Barbra. Then she sings "People" in the style of the original 1964 release which is breathtaking.
The Finale is "Make our Garden Grow" complete with a choir and her special guest stars for the evening, Il volvo. In act one she did a duet of "Smile with them that was seamless. On "Make our Garden Grow" she duets with il volvo and the choir in the background...it is a showstopper. The audience goes wild. She also does a poignant "Here's to Life" and comes back for 2 encores "Some other Time" which again, like "Make our Garden Grow" is by Leonard Bernstein. She closes out with "Happy Days are Here again with the audience singing with her.
It is so great to see a talent like Barbra Streisand really singing complex material and connecting with the audience on each song. If only the young talent of today could learn a thing or two from this once in a lifetime legend the world would be a better place musically. Barbra gives all her being over to each song and it shows by the response she gets from the audience. While she is singing, everyone is so enraptured you could hear a pin drop. Yet in between songs people are going wild telling Barbra how much they love her and how fabulous she is. She even has an ask Barbra segment where audience members fill out cards before the show and she reads the questions and answers the questions with great wit, charm and comedic timing. This is what show business is all about. I recommend you buy this CD/DVD immediately while it is still on sale this week as I am sure the price will rise in a week or 2. The cd/DVD also comes with a great picture book and is worth every penny. Barbra you truly are "The greatest Star"

The occasion was the first two nights of her world tour beginning in Brooklyn, the place where she was born. She was performing with a 65 piece orchestra conducted by Bill Ross that provided such sparkling arrangements to all the Streisand favourites. From the gorgeous opener "As If We Never Said Goodbye" to the closing anthem "Some Other Time", this is a masterclass in demonstrating the range, sweetness and power of her voice and the total control that she has over it.
In her own words it is a celebration of music that she loves and written by people that she loves. This is the perfect cue for her to deliver stunning performances of the late Marvin Hamlisch's Oscar winning songs "Through The Eyes Of Love" and "The Way We Were" followed by a dramatic reading of Jule Styne's "Being Good Isn't Good Enough".
Of course, no Streisand performance would be complete without another Oscar winner, "Evergreen", from the movie "A Star Is Born" and another Styne classic, a spine tingling "People" from "Funny Girl". Among my own favourites is an enchanting reading of the Jimmy Webb classic, "Didn't We" and a gently swinging Cole Porter delight, "You're The Top".
Other standards include a duet with her gifted son, Jason Gould, singing Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is The Ocean" and "What'll I Do/My Funny Valentine, a Berlin/Rodgers & Hart medley, featuring some superb trumpet from Chris Botti.
These performances are magnificent and, in all senses, this album is a triumph for Barbra Streisand. For the rest of us, it's a celebration of half a century of Streisand magic.
