In this film, however, it's not the laughs that shine, but the action and the cool. Wright does use his editing skills like a boss in this film, and the cast is remarkably stacked with stars playing second to a lesser known actor in a very interesting role. The action sequences are great, especially some car chases that are the best I've seen (I am not a fan of the over-the-top, digitized mayhem of the usual car-based action films).
But where Wright really relies on his bag of tricks is in lining up the action and mood with a killer soundtrack. Pay close attention to the music as you watch something even as mundane as the character walking down the street. Wright said basically that he was making a musical without any singing, and he succeeds.
Last note: Jamie Foxx is really unhinged and menacing in this movie as the type of person I would never, ever want to meet in real life. Kevin Spacey is also menacing, though in a laconic, controlled way.

Baby Driver is a 2017 action film written and directed by Edgar Wright. It stars Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver seeking freedom from a life of crime with his girlfriend Debora (Lily James). Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Jamie Foxx and Jon Bernthal appear in supporting roles.
I haven’t seen Andel Elgort in much else, but I imagine this is going to change. ‘Baby Driver’ Is more than a stone’s throw away From his roles in ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ and ‘Divergent’ with his innocent demeanor making for a naturally nuanced performance. I am reminded very much of Miles Tanner ( I'm convinced they would make for a well-rounded combination of talent and #attitude) in that Elgort is a perfect representation of juvenile maturity. if I do say so myself: his nomination for a Golden Globe for this performance was more than deserved.
Before moving on I do want to give credit and attention to the easily overlooked C.J. Jones; His casting isn’t a complete accident given Wrights’ specifications in writing, but being someone born deaf has contributed to significant difficulty in scoring work that captures his abilities. Most actors seen on film and similar mediums portraying dead characters aren't actually deaf ( as a consequence of forgoing the cost of a translator) but I don't need to elaborate on the importance of sound and sensitive representation. ‘Baby Driver’ marks the 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 appearance of a black deaf actor in an international Blockbuster, and the decisions leading to this are worth doting on to some degree. It also warms my heart to know that Elgort learned American sign language for the sake of being able to effectively communicate with Jones on set, and the bond between them makes for some emotionally compelling interactions on screen. I'm not surprised though. Actions speak louder, y’all.
From the very start of ‘Baby Driver’ Wright has an obvious destination in mind. This target is indefinitely reached successfully, but I will say that I am a bit underwhelmed by some of the expositional pieces and those meant to speak on the character development enclosed. I am certainly not privy to the tiniest details that would elaborate on specific formalities related to Baby’s form of “employment”, but I find myself wanting to know more about its leprous influence on his psyche and behavior as a whole. I feel largely at a loss when making sense of Baby’s motives and intermittently split second decisions that reflect some deep-seated prudence, but the overarching context makes for some interesting points of self-reflection and contention. There's much to be said about themes as they relate to nurturing and squandering the parts of an individual responsible for their separate identities, and the power of perspective is entertained and alluded to at length.
There's not much to add as it pertains to the set design, cinematography, and sound mixing - but these elements are outstandingly immersive and are a #creativeflex more than anything if I have ever seen one.The camera work is shaky - but controlled - and captures the high-energy of ‘Baby Driver’ and the chaos which ensues. Contrary to the easily assumed: the car chasing scenes are made using absolutely no CGI, and the performers are all doing their own stunts. Most impressive is the way in which the soundtrack is intertwined with the plot and it's choreography (Everything down to the gunshots is synced with the music playing) and further fortifies the understanding one has a Baby and the world he's surrounded by. As audience members are put in its titular characters’ shoes - or his headphones rather - viewers have no choice but to listen and thoughtfully engage with his charade.
Is ‘Baby Driver’ flawless? Not really. What we DO have here though is a substantial representation of Wright’s dedication to this project (he spent an estimated 10 years actually writing this film) and a piece that sets standards outside of its original objectives.
Ending on a note that ponders accountability, ‘Baby Driver’ is a road to hell that is paved with good (and possibly even the best) intentions.
Beauty matters. Casting was pitch-perfect. Editing was phenomenal. And the music? It's the driver of the story. I love when movies leave you with a sense of hope and d**n the critics who say otherwise. This movie met me in the hazy expanse when you're just wakening and the last vestige of your dreams are tantalizingly flitting away. You realize you're back in your bed, but a smile creeps to the edge of your face, and you're ready to face another day.
